View Full Version : Machineflesh 2D Challenge Entry: Richard Lyons
03 March 2004, 01:56 AM
Richard Lyons has entered the Machineflesh 2D Challenge.
03 March 2004, 12:26 AM
The idea is a demolition worker in the future. Jobs are rare so implants are imperative to stay ahead of the competition, to swing the one ton hammer.
I will start on the line work, good luck to all.
03 March 2004, 02:31 AM
Cool Drawing Dude. Environment looks Great!
03 March 2004, 05:59 AM
Welcome to the challenge and goodluck:beer:
Looks promising so far... good composition!!! Keep going:thumbsup:
03 March 2004, 06:16 AM
Thanks Tommy, it will fit the comp a little better once I get some detail into the character.
03 March 2004, 12:32 PM
Good start... I like the composition of it... Think you shoud be closer to the character in order to see more details...
Good Luck!! :)
03 March 2004, 09:55 PM
nice concept! love that her implants have a practical use and the environment your putting her in looks like it'll be funky. Nice One!:bounce:
03 March 2004, 09:07 AM
Here is another idea, not to sure which one to go with.
This poor creature is slow minded and extremely easy to train. They are seen as work animals, but debates remains weather they are intelligent enough for there employment to be deemed as slavery. They are known for there extremely strong grips and clumsiness so in more intricate jobs implants are needed. This one works in a bar. Its bionic arms are to guaranty it doesnít break any glasses.
03 March 2004, 09:22 AM
OMG!!!! That is really awesome!!!!!
03 March 2004, 09:44 AM
I like the two concepts.
the graphic treatment of your last one is very insteresting.
What is disturbing me is that he look like
too much to a man-wolf or vampire
(i don't know why :) )
Perhaps he get tips sucking blood lol
I keep an eye on it.
03 March 2004, 01:32 PM
You draw very well!
In the second one I like the little flag, very nice detail.
03 March 2004, 01:36 PM
03 March 2004, 01:37 PM
wow amazing concept, my money's definately on the bar troll
03 March 2004, 10:57 PM
fIRST oFF, tHESE ARE FRIGG'N GREAT. Second, I am torn between the two. The demolition is a complete idea. But the mech monkey-panther guy could be so cool as a beaten slave. Maybe if he was behind a bar and the bartender was smackiong him over the head or something. Not sure... Anyways.
Can't waite to see more!
03 March 2004, 11:58 PM
The bar troll looks definately great. Even better imo than the demolition one. I'm starting to fear the next upload (nah nah, actually can't wait ! :p)
03 March 2004, 05:45 AM
When I look again and again and again.... I am not sure. They are both outstanding:thumbsup:
Why u can't come up with one crappy and one outstanding concept:D
I wait for your decission, because my brain is smoking:beer:
03 March 2004, 05:47 AM
I love the second one, totally awsome stuff dude! Keep it up!
03 March 2004, 06:07 AM
Thanks for the imput people. I will have a crack at it again tonight. I'm thinking the bar troll, it probably shows more of the machine flesh detail, but this time i'll try and make him really sad... maybe an ashtray for a hat.:)
03 March 2004, 08:06 AM
I like the idea of something so ugly and mean looking serving people drinks...
cocktails in a swanky bar perhaps...?
The ashtray for a hat is a fab idea. People always treat bar staff badly (unless they've got the hots for them) and that'd sum it up.
04 April 2004, 10:56 AM
Cocktails at a swanky bar? LOL I'd love to see that thing in a black bow-tie!
I love how you've brought in the issue of how genetically engineered servants will be treated in the future - could be a very interesting composition. If you choose to follow that path you described, be aware that you must make the creature communicate alot with its face/expression.
IMO it would be interesting for its features to bear badly concealed contempt for the people it serves. Or perhaps the its general appearence could give the impression of a slow-moving, stupid creature while its eyes betray intelligence.
04 April 2004, 07:50 AM
trŤs bon dessin super
04 April 2004, 07:59 AM
HAH! Just kiddin'!
Here's my take on the two concepts: they're both reall great and well thought out. I think the first one is a little more empathetic to humans. What with the layoffs and and dirty business going on in the Animation Industry today, I think the first one really hits a note with me.
On the other hand, slavery was a big issue back in the day, and it touched a lot of peoples lives, even today.
Basically, it comes down to the demographic/audience whom you wanna influence. Since I'm in the first demographic, I'd say go with the first one.
Cheers, and I can't wait to see more.
04 April 2004, 09:50 AM
Yeah of course go for the first one ! great compo
04 April 2004, 07:06 PM
This challenge is about creating a character right? Your second concept definitely is a character, i feel something when looking at it.
04 April 2004, 09:02 AM
I couldnít help but have a crack at the Frankenstein idea. Itís such a classic.
I donít think mine has enough in it at this stage and Iím still keen to go back to previous ideas.
So I might leave Frank how he is.
04 April 2004, 09:57 AM
 awsome concept richo .... beautiful sketches as usual
just a suggestion but how bout lots of metallic hairs on his fingers he looks kinda itchy
04 April 2004, 03:28 PM
I think the Frankenstein idea is really strong, whether or not you use this sketch. I thought about it too. It fits with the mix of technology and flesh, and is such a classic theme - the way our initial horror of changing the human form is giving way to implants, organ transplants, cloning, mixing of DNA etc. It's more relevant than ever.
And of course your artwork rocks ;-)
04 April 2004, 03:54 PM
Great sketch very expressive ! Even if you don't keep it :)
04 April 2004, 04:13 PM
I still kind of like the troll idea. All the same that Frankenstein sketch really is very nice.
04 April 2004, 04:34 PM
Is Frankenstein angry because he has a wedgy? :p Great sketch just like the others. I think te second is my favorite, but you could make one nice backround with the first. (swinging that hammer!) Do you just use pencil on ordinary paper and tint it slightly on the computer or is that the colour of the paper? I really like the sketchyness of it. Show us more.
04 April 2004, 06:19 AM
I donīt know how itīs gonna be, but the concepts looks great!! keep it up!
04 April 2004, 08:50 AM
you have a beautiful Hand!!
I like all sketch but my favorite is the first.
04 April 2004, 10:57 AM
Frankie's sure looks good in a spedo. ;) Oh yeah baby, that's what I'm talkin' about.
No, I'm not really a necrofiliac. Get off it.
Hehehe, all kiddin' aside, it really looks great! Love the sharp angles and harsh edges on 'Stein's monster. I have to say I like the look and concept of the first one still. And Alex is right, you could make one hell of an environment for that piece.
Keep 'em coming!
04 April 2004, 10:06 AM
Frankinstien has been abducted by his creation.
I'm trying to use elements out of the first concept with the Frank idea.
04 April 2004, 02:12 PM
hey man this is relly good stuff. nice direction/ action.
04 April 2004, 09:56 PM
Hahaha, yeah that's pretty cool..... the bar troll is still my favourite though. :D
04 April 2004, 06:22 AM

I scan in pencil sketch's and add tone in photoshop.
sorry about the late reply. I like the wedgy idea, like a rodeo bull going nuts over his nuts.
04 April 2004, 04:09 PM
Hey, i've already seen your work, didn't know at the time it was yours,
your line work is very good!
i think your last post is the one who is more complete, but i kinda like the bar troll.
you're right we share the same taste in concepts!
Frank is the father of all future cyborgs!
04 April 2004, 08:28 PM
I love that style. Very expressive and powerful. And cartoonish
at the same time.
Dunno about the Frank concept though. We've seen it before
if you know what I mean.
But keep up the nice work :)
04 April 2004, 05:57 PM
Damn!!! Great work....can't wait for the update.
04 April 2004, 02:20 AM
I really think it's a draw between the first and last image you posted. The first one has a little more image focus then the last one, but they both look like they really could shape into something really cool. Nice.
05 May 2004, 06:50 AM
Have been very busy, here is yet another idea. Crazy looking Girl with bionic arms to carry a huge gun. Not much to it, I just thought it would look cool. Tell me what you think.
05 May 2004, 10:42 AM
Raaaah I love the last one  russian girl style with big gun :D
You've got a really good style man, I'm amazed by the dynamism of your lines
05 May 2004, 12:12 PM
GREAT sketches! Nice style and design... looking forward to seeing more!
05 May 2004, 12:36 PM
yes very cool sketch the last one , excellent stuff in general
05 May 2004, 03:19 PM
great stuff man! like a lot , especially the last one:thumbsup:
05 May 2004, 03:31 PM
Love ya drawing style!!!!really like the bar-server there!!!!
The last one is really cool too!!!only thing disturbing me a litlle(very little:D )is that the pose of her right leg could maybe be a little more dynamic, that's all:blush: (lol)
Amazing!!!can't wait to see your next work!!!!!!!!!
05 May 2004, 07:32 PM
Struth the recoil from that'd send her flying for a mile. Mighty fine sketch though :applause:
05 May 2004, 01:14 AM
great style. The sketchiness of it could almost be left the way it is. Good layout too.
05 May 2004, 01:32 AM
Love your art my man!!! Must admit I prefer old Fraky but hey, who doesn't like a chick with bigger shoulders than they do? I ask you!
05 May 2004, 12:09 PM
Love the chunkyness of the mechanic and body forms. They show a a cool sense of strength and power that comes with having to lug around the heavy mechanical parts. The bar waiter beast thing is probably your nicest character, shows strength but you see his senstivity too. A slave to his own body. Cool style bud, keep it up.
05 May 2004, 02:32 AM
I like the idea of something cute fragile having great power, like danger mouse or in this case a rip of of the gully character in battle chaser.
05 May 2004, 02:39 AM
Nice sexy little girl ! I love your work man. Great work.
05 May 2004, 07:01 AM
Ive said it before and ill say it again, awesome sketches, love your characters. Keep the updates/concepts coming.
05 May 2004, 07:57 AM
And i only just noticed, A fellow Aussie too...:beer:
05 May 2004, 03:05 PM
all of them are great.
05 May 2004, 07:12 PM
i love the contrast between the cute girl and the heavy gloves !
Great concept !!! Be sure to sent me the final image !
btw: damn that girl is sexy !
05 May 2004, 09:59 PM
the work in this competition just gets better and better
great sketches and great characters...not sure which is better...I'd probably vote for the girl...
I look forward to seeing stuff in colour:thumbsup:
05 May 2004, 11:58 PM
GrEaT sketches!!!
The last is very cool, the little girl with bizarre mecha hands!!!
I like very much.
keep the excellent job!
see my entry (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=141195)
05 May 2004, 03:31 AM
Love the idea of this. I just noticed that her roght boob looks way to big, when compared to the left one. Just something I noticed.
06 June 2004, 02:46 AM
I have chosen again. I hope I have enough time to do the comp justice, the standards get higher every time I look.
06 June 2004, 03:23 AM
im glad youre going fo rthis beasty, hes my fave from all of your initial conept work, i definately though he had great potential. Good to see youre still around. I look forward to seeing more..    :D
06 June 2004, 07:57 AM
Starting to add colour photo shop.
06 June 2004, 08:06 AM
Trying to change the expression, like someone has dropped a glass and hasn't bother to pick it up or noticed that the Bar Troll is cleaning up the mess.
The bar troll gives the person a nastylook, muttering under his breath as he goes about his job.
06 June 2004, 08:43 AM
Wow! The concept is cool and the colors...
06 June 2004, 11:18 PM
funky baby! I love it!:applause: great detail in the face and foot! :bounce: cant wait to see it finished!!
06 June 2004, 02:47 AM
Working a little more into the expression.
06 June 2004, 12:13 PM
...and your technique!!! :buttrock:
06 June 2004, 12:55 PM
I looove that metal arm texture! Nice work
06 June 2004, 02:58 PM
Looking good and I like your colors. Is it Photoshop or Painter your working in?
06 June 2004, 04:36 PM
i LIKE YOUR DRAWING STYLE A LOT, also the idea is brillant!
06 June 2004, 12:09 PM
Got a ways to go, hope I can squeeze it in.
06 June 2004, 06:12 AM
Very cool character! Nice transitions from flesh to metal. Nice painting style too!

06 June 2004, 01:31 PM
This is it, have ran out of time. Tell me what you think?
06 June 2004, 01:36 PM
very nice, this is annoying having trouble with posting!.... this is sweet though man, i like his harsh look, like a real glassy would express after a long night, he seems at the bottom of the food chain... you did well.
06 June 2004, 01:55 PM
agreed , very very good pic this one!
06 June 2004, 09:10 PM
Just a suggestion:
Maybe you should consider making a cuter faced trol? I mean, if I was at a bar I wouldnt want that thing near me. hehe.
06 June 2004, 11:01 PM
DUDE! sweet! love it!:buttrock:
06 June 2004, 06:30 AM
Thats all for me.
06 June 2004, 06:33 AM
close up so you can see the detail.
06 June 2004, 06:35 AM
This time its really it. Cheers.
06 June 2004, 07:05 AM
original idea !
06 June 2004, 01:02 AM
This is killer, talk about a bouncer!
Great idea and awesome work!
07 July 2004, 02:17 PM
Very cool outcome. I love the way you built up his skin, and that expression is wonderful. I think the piled up tray is much better than the one you had with just drinks on it, as it ads more feeling to the piece. Great work, and good luck in the voting!
07 July 2004, 03:06 AM
Thanks for all the feed back. This is the first comp I have been in and it has inspired me to produce more pieces in my spare time. When the judging is over I will finish off the Bar Troll and post him back on this site.
Thanks again for all the kind comments, good luck to everyone who contented.http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gifhttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
does anybody know when the judging is over????
07 July 2004, 06:22 AM
