03-17-2004, 11:31 AM
Started pencilling-out some rough ideas, already...

think I'm onto something a little bit 'different' here, already!
Gonna lean hard 'an deep into this one to see what I can pull out of the current rash of scribbles....

03-17-2004, 05:08 PM
really looking forward to see some new things from you! hopefully it won't be "to" good! :)

03-17-2004, 06:50 PM
Atwooki hi there !
Btw your doggy inspired me for an idea before challenge but no I`ll try to make it. Thanks :p
Wish You Luck !

03-18-2004, 05:16 PM (

The outcast of the Cyclops; the 'albino cyclops' has hinged wooden bones, and protects his delicate skin from the elements by covering himself with moss and mud; usually only emerging in the twilight hours....

Gonna make HEAVY use of SSS on the poor cyclop's skin....lots of veins, blotchy skin from sun-damage, smeared mud patches - change his eye to 'albino-reddish pink and deeply wrinkled skin on joints.

03-18-2004, 05:31 PM
ahahah! :D thats so awesome!! but I'm so jealous of this concept  I'm sure it will be fun to make, so many possibilities.. (he could fight 'mea talpa' later on btw :) )

03-18-2004, 05:38 PM
hey, cheers fellah! - finally whipped up a concept :)

Hinged wooden joints? well, his flesh has to hang on somthing - wanted to get away from the metal/rusty metal thing....

Gonna introduce some thin rope/twine in there, also...... (to help keep his bits together :D

>edit: yeah: he'd kinda suit trapezing around with 'Mea Talpa' ;)

03-18-2004, 11:15 PM
Cool concept and idea but i think its not too practical to have wooden bones on a creature ...Probably there's some catch somewhere.
Love your work!! ...will be keeping an eye on this thread:thumbsup:

03-18-2004, 11:36 PM
That looks awesome !
And idea is very original...
btw it reminds me of your mole :)
Nah, I love him...
Can`t wait to see some modeling.

03-18-2004, 11:44 PM
great sketch and tons of character .. it'll be fun to see this thing come alive ...if that's how you go

i especially like the diaper

tons of fun & good luck

03-19-2004, 12:00 AM
skello: Thanks! yeah, he might well turn into a bit of a sad ol' arthritic kinda thumper:shrug:

R.Vor: Hey there, Vor! mole? you must mean fellah - 'Mea Talpa' my friend! don't let him hear that.. :)

pigwater: Cheers! The daipers, hmm... thought he needed something to keep his youth about him :D

03-19-2004, 12:33 AM
Excellent concept ! Really surprising and interresting !
I'll watch this thread too ;)

03-19-2004, 12:40 AM
hehehe thats funny - great to see you here

03-19-2004, 01:05 AM
Hello there Atwooki.........

Looks like a nice idea.Nice style and look, the exxxagerated thin legs give him a fun and toonish appeal. The wood angle is fresh, and I think you can still add that metal like substance if need be later for support etc,etc...

Moss and deep rich wood are always a great combo.....Add in a little sci-fi tech type machinery and this has fun and potential with style written all over it.

03-19-2004, 01:15 AM
love the moss!

Great concept! Anything but unoriginal!

03-19-2004, 01:19 AM
Very cool concept Chris, it's got a nice whymsical design element to it. Reminds me of those old 70s psychedelic cartoons a bit. Good luck.

03-19-2004, 08:56 AM
Wow!!! plenty encouragement :)
working on updates this shortly with an 'arm test'

thanks, guys!

03-19-2004, 09:22 AM
ooops :wavey: . It`s only in eyes
/me lol
Waiting for an arm

03-19-2004, 09:52 AM
Oh man! Love that concept - reminds me a bit of those traditional swedish/norwegian bush trolls we've got roaming around in the wilderness here.

Full score for this low-tech approach. :applause:

03-19-2004, 10:12 AM
exactly... It makes it thousand times more original then any other work I`ve seen.

03-19-2004, 11:22 AM
ahaha 'R.Vor'! this looks nothing like my mole. just the goofiness, and the fact that they live in the forest. (but there will only be room enough for ONE in the forest, in the end! ;) )

work work, arm arm :wip:

03-19-2004, 12:28 PM
Love it!! Inpatient to see more!

03-19-2004, 12:33 PM (

Trying to get a bit of form into the arms......short blunt 'moss gathering' fingernails, and grubby, hardened fingertips....will dirty up the nails considerably, and make them more broken here and there.... :D

03-19-2004, 12:37 PM
Hey thanks, you guys!!!

Yeah, this archaic knobbler is SERIOUSLY lo-tek :p

gonna post a small front pose....

03-19-2004, 12:45 PM (

now has a bag of carefully selected sticks on his back;
one of his more intellectual and skilled pastimes is collecting dry firewood....

03-19-2004, 01:13 PM
Thats awesome...
But maybe also a bucket of water... in case of fire ? :lightbulb

03-19-2004, 01:17 PM
and ruin his 'beautiful' fingernails carrying all tht extra weight? hey! you've got a point there, tho' .... :surprised

03-19-2004, 01:38 PM
great concept, very original. I'll have to get my thinking cap on to get something as unique as this:thumbsup:

03-19-2004, 01:48 PM (

rough leather water pouch on back (test).....I like it!

so sue me, Vor :D

03-19-2004, 01:52 PM
Or maybe some water in some bucket on his shoulder and some wooden pipe going somewhere... Like ancient extinguisher(or how is ti written correctly)
But beware it might get too mechanical...
It`s up to you to decide.
Edit :
Sorry, can`t delete that (next)post.

03-19-2004, 01:55 PM
That looks cool !

03-19-2004, 04:28 PM
Haha, the pipe was not a too bad idea, some sort of battlepipe he can avoid to get attacked by angry shorties, like some "mickeymouse on cocaine" type of warriors... in makin them stoned nah nah nah nah...
Ur big dude looks really cute, sorta Troll and very natural. I can picture him just want to have peace in his forest and being some sort a Spirit of nature....
and of course best luck and make him rock tha house.... :buttrock:

03-19-2004, 04:39 PM
What a clever and unique idea! Nice concept drawings too. Real character and style. I'll be watching this one to see how it turns out.

Keep up the good work Chris! :applause:

03-19-2004, 05:50 PM
Haha! 1st_Angel:
Was supposed to be his club; just leaning on it out of sheer laziness;
but a pipe? why not???
Think his chances of getting hold of the ol' 'peruvian flake' or a bit of bolivian 'marching powder' are a bit slim in his neck of the woods, tho' - even if he could do with a little 'kick' now an' then.. :D

Hey Cheers Kirt! very nice of you; I'm flattered....!
Really want to push this guy all the way

Roll, roll, roll.......

03-19-2004, 07:40 PM
Awesome concept :) I love it!

Maybe add some more 'machineliness' to the moment he just seems like a rejected cyclops. Maybe give him a big chunka wood somewhere on his body. Or take away the flesh somewhere to reveal the wooden bones (you know like on the forearm or shin etc).

wonderful idea

03-19-2004, 08:51 PM
Lookin good, nice to see ya again!

03-19-2004, 10:32 PM
very cool concept. one thing that you might want to work on though is to make some of the wood mechanics more prominent, cuz right now it looks too much like something out of LOTR.

good luck with the challenge! :)

03-19-2004, 10:34 PM
I like the comedic with the beauty of your idea. The idea of a large cyclops with wooden joints... that just rocks... now are the wooden parts living?... so he's sort of part tree part human... that so rocks... great idea! I can't wait to see this one!

excellent concept!

03-20-2004, 09:52 AM
yeah... It`s great.
But beware, don`t make it worse, it can get too mechanichal with those pipe`o`weapon

03-20-2004, 03:03 PM
Cheers, OPC! Where ya bin??? Thanx for the nice PM!

Martin: ..make some of the wood mechanics more prominent.. Your so, so right.... ;)I will be making every effort within the concept to push the flesh back from his joints, so revealing his 'wooden' ligaments and bones - the ligaments will be be the 'morphing' element, from bone to flesh.....

imscifi: Thanxs!!! ... now are the wooden parts living?... oh, yes; this will be 'organic wood :D

Hey Dude! full steam ahead, thanks for all :)

03-21-2004, 06:14 PM
There will be a number of insects and wood 'larvae' living within (and on) the wood and moss covering his body, and are lovingly 'nurtured' and farmed by the cyclops:
These creatures serve the dual purposes of keeping his delicate skin infection-free, and as juicy snacks for those long night-time forays....

03-21-2004, 06:23 PM
Very cool concept, and a very nice twist on the theme!

03-24-2004, 10:16 AM
why no updates?
:) I wanna see more of this freak of a thing you've come up with.

03-24-2004, 05:55 PM
Yeah, sorry Rhezz!
Minor legal issue to sort out :deal: back on track now :p

03-25-2004, 04:34 AM
ok cool :)

03-25-2004, 04:22 PM
Hahahaha... this is amazing man! I love the concept
Good luck and keep it up!

03-26-2004, 08:26 PM
Brilliant idea. So different from all the others. Can’t wait to see more.

fellah, I'm HOT on your tail.... just started modelling some bits; will post later ;)

:wip: :wip: :wip:

03-28-2004, 12:00 PM (

A base structure:
Just trying to find some volume at the moment, into which to build further details; the 'wooden effect' of his bones will be brought out of this base structure, the skull, spine, limbs, fingers and toes eventually taking on an semi exoskeletal appearance, with the flesh being 'whittled' back away from the joints and tendons...

03-28-2004, 12:43 PM
haha, this is so great!
excellent concept!
I can't wait to see all details you will be putting into this.. looks like a fun model to work on!
keep going! :buttrock:

03-28-2004, 01:00 PM
this design is awesome, I can already see him hopping around with his bouncy belly and his big stick. If you're finished with him and you still have some time left it would be fun to see some animation.
Your muscle structure and edgeloops look good too, I'm sorry but I don't really have any suggestions at this point on your model.
Just keep it up :)

03-28-2004, 01:23 PM
I would like to see him with a bigger belly(more round and short in the sideview), more hunchback.. and the flap hanging down from his neck.. thinner upperarms in the side view. maybe smaller head(it might look big now because the "neckflap" ain't there) all as in the concepts.
it looks like you where a little afraid of exaggerating these shapes in the 3d model, as you did so nice in the concepts.

in general, exaggerate the shapes more, it will make him more interesting, and fun looking.. just my opinion :)

03-28-2004, 01:44 PM
Thanks, guys!
Well observed criticisms, and thanks,
The head WILL be a lot smaller, and although I can 'push' his belly out considerably further, I don't want him to look too much like a 'comma' shape!
The arms are currently just a base to work on top of, as they will be 'chopped-off' and remodelled, to achieve the entwined roots feel of the wooden skel. The upper arms should become, as you pointed out, be as thin as his thighs; if not more so, and each finger three times the thickness of them! I'm looking at the arm really being just shoulder, big elbow, big knuckles and broad fingers, held together by his wooden skeleton...
I still need to draw some attention to his eye, but as this is just the preliminary couple of hours on this model, I'll play about with some volumic variations, and I gratefully take on board your useful crits :)

03-28-2004, 04:09 PM
It looks really good!
Want to see it with textures! So hurry!!!

03-28-2004, 05:06 PM
I like your model. The fat guy is great and think something beautiful will come out of this.

03-28-2004, 05:23 PM
Nice rough there! Lovely proportions and a perfect face - he looks really daft already, which I assume is just the ticket with this guy.

The neck looks a bit unclear, if it's thick or sagging, but this is an early stage of course.

I love this blobby style - keep going... :wip:

03-28-2004, 08:34 PM
I have to agree the neck is unclear, but it's early. The thigh is way to thin.I know it's exagerated toon style. But you should give more size,at least a little, even beyond armor or wood covering this area.Does look to have fun written in it however, and a decent start.

03-30-2004, 02:10 AM
Hehehe!! :wip:

04-04-2004, 11:49 PM (

getting some basic anatomy dealt with for the moment; mostly muscles and ligaments, will start on the wooden skeleton tomorrow....

04-05-2004, 05:23 AM
really coming along nice atwooki .. the character of him is really starting to come through .. nice clean modelling with great muscle def ...

gonna be fun to see the wood parts bring him to mechcanicle life:thumbsup:

04-05-2004, 11:38 AM
Hey buddy,

great work on the model! Really looks like your sketch.
Keep it up :)

04-06-2004, 02:34 AM (

playing with some underlyng skin textures for the moment, to get a feel for the character....

04-06-2004, 06:32 AM
All procedural... ¿Right?

It's nice, but you'll need to add some UV texturing :p

04-06-2004, 11:01 AM
hahaha, he's looking great,
cant wait for wood parts.

04-06-2004, 11:31 AM
Waahaa! Looking good. There so much character in your character, it should be enough to go around for two guys at least.

04-06-2004, 01:44 PM
Hey thanks guys! Much appreciated :)
Bit early for a 'texture' I suppose, although for the main part it IS UV mapped (mosconariz)
Still lots of twigs creepers and binding parts to finish, but thought it would be good to put some flesh on for the moment...

04-06-2004, 02:48 PM
WOOO very charming "little" model!! hehe I LOVED IT!!! Quick!! Add in the twigs and bushes!! :buttrock: REally cool! Would be fun to see him starring in his own cartoon :D

04-06-2004, 04:48 PM
Sorry about the UV comment... but it seems that bflesh is not interacting with movement, flexions and sun exposure  And about the model, IMHO the legs... I don't know, I would make them a little stronger, Know what I mean?

Except for that 2 things, you're making a really nice job here!

04-08-2004, 01:14 AM
those hands...those 're my favorits:thumbsup:

04-08-2004, 03:14 AM
Can't resist posting again, hehe pls updates updates!! :D :buttrock:

04-08-2004, 02:23 PM (

some wire updates....

04-08-2004, 02:25 PM (

beginnings of building the bases of the legs and feet for Z Brush....

04-08-2004, 02:29 PM
just wanted to pop in again and post a big  , looking good Atwooki.

04-08-2004, 02:54 PM
waaay cool ... i love the way it breaks up ... you got some killer muscle def going on and after it's z-brushed ...well .... it's gonna rock ...

great stuff ..and the pose and character you've put into him really conveys that old-wooden kinda rickety thing

top shelf stuff for sure

04-13-2004, 03:45 AM
Cant wit to see the brushworx start. ahrgh, those feet are so sweet. the whole character is sweet. Fantastic work, lovin it big time! :buttrock:  rock on!!!!!

04-13-2004, 10:47 AM
Cheers, buddy! very kind of you :)

Thanks, pigwater!
Trying to figure out my 'ZB' methodology ATM....
Had to go back and rework my 'base mesh' a little.... ;)

Thanx for the nice critz, the 1st!Cant wit to see the brushworx start.
Nor can I; getting a little impatient now....
Still reworking and optimising for ZB..... shouldn't be too long now ;)

Thanks so much you Guys :)

04-13-2004, 08:29 PM
great concept dude. love those tiny legs. i can hear 'em creaking. i cant wait to see how u blend the flesh with wood skeleton. another thing... the nails... is it made out of wood too?

04-17-2004, 09:45 PM
looks realy cool artwooki :applause:

04-28-2004, 06:41 PM
Hmmm, Chris, any updates in sight I'm curious to see this guy progress :wavey:

04-30-2004, 04:18 PM
Gorgeous style and modeling.

05-01-2004, 08:11 AM
Mmmm - - - those feet look very sweet - - - the way his lower thighs break up into separate muscle bits is superb - - - now we want to see MORE of this excellent fellow!

05-04-2004, 12:04 PM
Wow! I like what I see!

This mesh is by far the cleanest I've seen in this challenge. This mesh even looks good when it's unsmoothed.

I also LOVE the extreme proportions in this character! Never ever think about making his legs stronger! (Sorry mosconariz ;) )
