Were should there be extra joints and what purpose does it have?
eh... it is a bit different, but some put e.g. extra joints in the lower arm to get a twist in the lower arm, when the wrist rotates... some put some extra joints in the upperarm to get some extra deformation there... some even use joints to simulate muscles... :)
there is also a nice tutorial section on LearningMaya about rigging... -->
