well, I started out playing around in Wings3d at uni one day .. so I ended up doing this thingie like a totem pole with layer upon layer .. but it suddenly ended before it was actually long enough to look like that.
Imported it into Blendered, textured (darn those stretching artifacts) & some adjustments/bit more modelling and this is one of the results that came out:
what do you think?
I call it "Black leather totem" .. as I like the look at the bottom.

PS: i'm teribly nervous as this is the first work I dare expose to general critique on CgTalk and I'm simply in awe of the general pro quality works I see here. I know I'm still a noob ... but someday .. sooomeeedaaayyy !!!!

its kinda nice, really. and yea, the bottom is pretty fantastic. but can really see the top parts in the render, and the mid section is kinda weird. funky, but weird. maybe its the lighting. wireframe looks like a bitch, haha. gotta say its nice ah, but maybe some shots of the top and others of midsection with nicer lighting?

thanks. With the lighting I did some faking as with true photon & Gi lighting higher resolution renderes were REALLY slow on my computer so what I did was create instances of the 2 lights in the scene so they were duplicated at slightly different angles. Thus fast render but still with smooth lighting.

aaaaah....much better. can see lots more. i swear, its totally cool. looks as if its something from a combined orc tauren tribe in warcraft 3. and like i said before, kudos to u for bein willing to work such a wireframe. u got the stuff man, jus keep workin it

thank you very much for the encouragements. They were really ... encouraging :-)
Here's a third version that I call "Lightning Tree" with some tweaks at the bottom of the object:
and a detail shot of the wire/flat shaded from above at those little bumpy things that I like. This is of the original object not the one I did modifications to in Blender.
