Big problem I had was with the hair. Im re-working that as you can see in this update.

i like the dirty/grimey/bloody texture you did for his skin, but i really think the eyes need more detail, which you probably know and just havent done them yet.

and btw, im not religous in any way, can you explain to me what the barbed wire around his head is? or whatever it is, pardon my ignorance ( :

Hey Nev4r,

Glad you like it. Yes, the eyes do need work im aware of that. I just put the shadow in there to mark the placement of them. Good catch though.

And the thing on his head is a crown of thorns. The Roman centurians placed the crown on his head, since he was proclaimed as "King of the Jews".

Hope that helps,

Here is another update. The actual painting is actually bigger than the sizes I posted above. Its 1024x1024 and more closely resembles the one below.

Oh and im doing everything in Photoshop with a wacom tablet.

*?+X?ry nice so far.

One little annoyance: obviously this is "Passion"-inspired art, but did you know that Christ was actually middle-eastern? In reality, he looked much more like an Iraqi or an Egyptian than like any of the Michelangelo-inspired blue-eyed, caucasian Jesuses. I guess my complaint is that it would be nice to see an original Jesus for once, one that isn't inspired or reinspired from the same sources... like maybe something more along the lines of the face that the BBC created ( to show what a person of Christ's origin might have looked like.

Although I agree with you statement, Mark, I dont think Jesus would look like the image that BBC created. I highly doubt Christ looked like an ape.

I like your progress so far, but i was just thinking a few things: there are a lot of paintings posted here that look "nice" you know what i mean? they have the forms and colors down pretty well, but they usually are still lacking depth and look too "digital" and perfect, i think you could make this a really nice piece if you made some of the orange color from the background reflect on his hair and face a little, and if you made the lighting very dramatic. As of right now the lighting looks very ambient, and doesnt add too much depth to his features. you could probably do this by making much darker shadows under his nose, chin, upper lip, and cheekbone, and darkening the shadows under his eyes, and also making brighter highlights on his forehead, crown thing, and top of hair.

you should also look at some of the colors you have chosen, you have dark greys and blacks, oranges and yellows and theres an underlying green in the hair. maybe consider a more complementary scheme with oranges and blues? make the shadows heavier in blue?

setting all that aside i like what you have so far.
btw, i really enjoy talking out of my ass, so you can completely ignore me because i hardly do any digital painting.

Haha you are hardly talking out of your ass my friend. The comments Ive received from you have been some of the best ideas anyone has ever given me. In fact, I was so suprised because it was as if you were reading my mind.

I definately want this to be very dramatic, and your ideas are really concrete on how to do this. I was going for something like Caravaggio, using tebernism, and the idea of light and dark.

I definately need to rework the lighting on his face, to better match the lighting on the wall. Thanks alot for all you comments.

Il update with a new version soon.

Heres an update:

hey man like the update, not much to say anymore, cept a little suggestion which might be kinda dumb, the hair is looking a bit too thick/bold/generic right now, maybe you should tone done the color in it? or even have the ear poking through the hair to break up all those wavy lines? just a suggestion.

looks good though!

I think im getting close to finishing this one. I need your opinion on some final colour/contrast issues. Check out the images below:
