View Full Version : Vehicles: Vanquish V12 vs. Ford GT 40
02 February 2004, 09:01 PM
Hi, this is my latest work. I am working on an animation featuring the Aston Martin Vanquish V12 and the new version of the Ford GT 40 in a racing battle. I regard the car models as finished and so I posted both here. Unfourtunately I haven't had any blueprints for both of them so I had to model them with just photo references. Everything is done in 3ds max 6, rendering with Mental ray.
The race track itself in now in the works and is roughly based on the trial mountain circuit from the Playstations GT series.
Comments are welcome.
Edit: Changed some shader settings and proportions:

Well, both cars look too damn flat. If u take a look at some ref images of aston martin u'll see that it's much different.
Fix it up, and it's good to roll.

looks pretty good man.
Especially because you didn't used any blueprints.
looking forward to see the animation

thanks for the comments guys.
Well.. maybe they are a little too flat, I'll see what I can do about it.
@Emrah: I strongly suggest you to do some search here in the forums before you start to post rubbish. I guess you were refering to this (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=120665&highlight=Vanquish) thread. As you for sure will notice the both cars look somewhat different. You would have been able to find that out for yourself if you had used the search function here (yes, there is one indeed).

Very nice! Wow i love em.
Im a max modeler myself, i was wondering how you made those shadows sharp like that, i can only make a soft, blurred looking one.
And can you tell me where to get Mentral ray?

Ford GT is my favourite car, and I've been modeling it myself for some time too. Looks like you have made it very well. I've also had some trouble finding the blueprints. There are a few at Onno Van Braam's site, but they aren't too accurate.

They look pretty nice, if not entirly accurate. They look a bit too smooth, I think they need some more detailing. Im not sure what parts though, but I just know you have some ref pics in standby.

thanks a lot for your nice comments. :)
@mitlancer: The shadows are Mental ray area shadows, and I placed one of max's standard trees (only in 3ds max 6) in fron of the cars to cast those shadows. It would have been possibleto use a shadow map too of course, but since Mental ray raytracer is incredibly fast I decided not to fake it but to use a real tree.
@supervlieg : yes, I know they both lack some accuracy. I think the GT 40 is modelled real close to the original I build the engine which you would be able to see through the rear window as well so it's pretty detailed.
The vanquish might need some refinement for example the windshield wipers.. I forgot them. ;)
@ bastiaan :sure. I used an Mental ray area omni light and an hdr image as a spherical environment. I used the same hdr image as a map for the skylight in the scene and rendered it with final gathering. To save render time it is a good idea to set the area light samples relatively low (~ 3*3 default is 5*5) and use the gaussian AA sampler instead of the box sampler. This way you blur the otherwise edgy appearence of the shadow.
