View Full Version : Character: Sasquatch

To break up things I decided to work on more than one model @ at time.
I'm hoping that this'll help me from getting tunnel vision so fast when i'm modeling Mala.
However, I need to work on just doing things faster anyhow, So it's good excersize I think.
So far the torso is in but i must solve for the head , legs and arms still. Should be fun
I've sculpted him several times with sculpey but never in 3D ...why ... i dunno silly me.

ooo this is gonna be a yummy one to follow.
Nice concept sketch, look forward to more updates :)

Oooo i wanna see him done :)

Thanks for the kind words.
The arms are almost done, I'll post them in the morning.
Next I'll start the form of the head, then jump on the hands which'll be a blast to do I think.
(cant take too much attention away from the other model.)
still gotta do the legs ... I was gonna go with another opposable leg set up; but the original just works for me.
heres the original pic
LW my scuplted versions will serve as good reference.

got the arms in

WEll the side is done and i might chnge the leg set any way.
I just think that a thing so nimble and quick as i want it to be would be in serious pain with such a rig.
However... one see's the oposable limb construction so much nowadays. Of course it's more functional but ......
I dunno i'll think about it and do something if one doesnt work I'll just do another
far as ole boy's head goes... I like the layout and i thought it would be good to show this part before the extrution of verts takes place. (coutesy of hobbitguy for the technique)
i wont work on him again till 7 pm (It's Mala Time) and I'm excited to see the turn out.
I hope it goes well

I noticed you model in segments. I have never tried that style before myself, but wondering what is the advantage you get with it?
great model so far btw.

If it as good as the sculpt, then it should turn out awesome!

Denniz : I guess it's a habit from modeling with super sculpey.
In my experience i've had to work in sections. so i'm just used to doing things that way.
I tend to not be as visually bombarded by the whole model.
It allows me to also focus on an area and solve the connection after i've got an approximate shape/form I'm happy with.
supervlieg: I've got my fingers crossed ..... hair could make or break this puppy errr beast.

nice idea :)
Some good basemodeling ...
cant wait to see what you are going to do witht he head and the rest of the body
keep it up m8

Model is coming along nicely. Concept is cool as well.
I find when I model both characters and environments I do it in sections as well. I find it allows me to focus on specific areas. When I want to check out the bigger picture, make sure proportions are correct, areas are scaled correctly, I'll unhide everything and take a quick look and then re-hide and continue.
It works well if you’re importing into an editor from a 3D program. The levels we are creating for our current project are being done in Maya, in sections, and then imported into the level editor. If the artists want to change something in a hall way, for instance, we can just import that hallway as opposed to the whole level. Time and patience saver. ^_^

Been up to my ears in understanding the hypershader better (wow really powerful) for most of last week.
I did however get to his legs today. :)
hopefully I'll get to the feet n toes and start the hands tommorow as well.
I went with the old cyclops legs from The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad. I may change it however..dunno yet, just wanted to get somthin done so i stayed true to my original design.

keep it coming. this has a whole lot of potential. can't wait to see a walk cycle on those legs.

Hm...Sasquatch? Where u got the name from? Malcolm in the middle?
03 March 2004, 12:16 PM
Sasquatch is a North American hairy ape-like beast that walks like a man from Native American myth and legend. It is also more commonly known as Big Foot.

nice mesh man ... keep us updated

I know what a sasquatch is but it's MY version...no ones ever really saw one... (or have they??) so how do we really know?
03 March 2004, 04:51 PM
Aaaah, well I am not very familiar with North American myths...
Just guessed :D

Blacklion - sorry my comment was to Miguelito to help him out. I think it looks great, and you're right no one has proven that they've seen one yet.

Thanks for the sentiment Dhin ( i was in jest when i posted the reply TBH )
I love myths .. thier so flexible.

Sorry it took so long to repost...
I had an accident that injured my right hand .. I got caught in between an abrasive surface while moving stuff and it pretty much tore the first two layers of skin off my knuckles. OUCH!!
it hurt to do anything.
but I'm glad I'm back..now i jsut gotta get back into the work flow again.
I got restless and Took an hour and created a first run head... I gotta get to the hands like I said I would.
one day at a time
03 March 2004, 11:03 PM
fixed some three and five siders on the face..but still plenty to go.
seems I'll have to go with a fare share of bump maps to get some of the facial creases I wanted...which is fine.. i need the practice.
And i dont want too dense of a mesh... i think it's near it's threshold for adding edge loops anyhow before it gets messy.
I've got an idea to solve the outer loops near the lips nd it'll hopefully also solve for some smooth head transition. The turning radius aint gonna be much without moving the shoulders and upper torso. but i like where it's going
Any suggestions or insights would be helpful.

Hooray!!! My hand is fully healed now!
Got the OK form the doc
So in celebration for such an event.... I started... The hand..............finally.
Plenty to tweak and change but it's a good start.
I'll connect the pieces and start on the feet tonight...but i gotta make some decisions here... three toes or four.. hmmm. The ramifications could be huge.
