Hey everyone,

Here are some more live demos for my Art Center entertainment class...

This time demonstrating painting from "scratch"....basically, start w/ a blank canvas and just paint, no pre-line drawing.

I didn't have too much time for this sunset one, so it's a bit sloppy. About 45~ min, painter 6. It's very John Berkey inspired.....he is one of my favorite painters...

Second underwater piece started as a quick demo to show my girlfriend how painter works, then i decided to finish it. Took about 2 hours.

These are fun to paint, so i plan to do a few more. Next time i want to spend more time and really get into it......but free time is a rarelity these days for me.......

Really really nice work man! Awesome! Your choice of colours is excellent. Although it seems, as you say, a bit sloppy in a few places, the mood conveyed is stunning. Hope you get around to sharpening them up a bit, although I already love them they way they are.

I must say though that I didn't realise that the second one was supposed to be set underwater. I think it needs some sea creatures, bubbles, seaweed, light caustics or the like to get the message across. To me it just looked like it was night and a bit foggy.

But top notch work,

It doesn't sound like you need all that much free time, considering how fast you painted these.

Nice job, I really dig these. (Good work on the DVDs, too)

02-24-2004, 03:42 AM
I like the bottom one. A very nice shark shape in the design. me likey.
The top one is.. i donno feel over done somehow. Because the bottom of the ship with the spikey thingy is just over done somehow or over used.

Than again I am speaking as a critic who scour the internet for good sci-fi work and not as someone who can seriously come up with one so original that i can call my own. :)

But the timing took to complete the pieces is AMAZING!! gods just imagine you thinkering on something as long as a weekend... STAGGERING!

So, how is STAR WARS part 3 coming along? :)

02-24-2004, 04:18 AM
Holy fanboy with this thread!

02-24-2004, 08:39 AM
Very great pictures in such a short amount of time. I love the atmosphere and mood of them. Good Job :buttrock:

02-24-2004, 09:12 AM
Wow it took you 2 hrs? usually takes me at least 3-4 hrs to do something like that... except I'd probably end up with more detail with mine.. I guess.... not :D

what a freak!!

02-24-2004, 09:52 AM
The john C Berkey touche is not here but the design is really similar.
I am completely fascinated by your illustrations.
I have difficulty in determining if you have a crazy talent or if there is just a talent to arranged the good way of elements, the lights.

02-24-2004, 12:21 PM
This is very good. Nice

02-24-2004, 01:24 PM
Excellent work Feng.
Nice colours and great atmosphere with the underwater scene.
I also am astounded how quickly you did these.

02-24-2004, 02:48 PM
interesting pieces.
differes greatly from your usual style. its very natural. good work

02-24-2004, 07:36 PM
Nice sloppyness indeed

02-24-2004, 08:25 PM
Wow.... the legendary Feng Zhu :)
inspirational and excellent work, fantastic how you capture mood....so did you get to work with Doug Chiang on Star Wars 3?

keep up the good work!

02-24-2004, 09:27 PM
I don't see what everyone is so giddy over. The colors are nice but otherwise it's just some sloppy sketches.

Me and apparently a lot of other members like the work that Feng has done. So he is quite popular. :D
Besides I don't see these paintings as just some sloppy sketches. I wish my sketches were that sloppy! As you said yourself he shows a well use of colors. Furthermore I like the concepts and the composition is nice. And if you look at the time in which it's done, it's quite impressive. I'd rather see a sloppy sketch like this than a piece rendered to dead which is not interesting at all. Well that's my opinion as a Feng Zhu-fanboy!

02-24-2004, 10:48 PM
 WOW... but we alread knew u are great at what u do! keep on!

02-25-2004, 12:44 AM
ahh mannnnn...!!!!! can u make the tutorial on those paintings?:p another dvd :p anyway. im speechlessss, forgive me feng ;)

yea they are totaly slopy but thats what helps to give them a style
most peoples work is totaly over rendered and quick concepts like this are really amazing when they can capture the essence, mood, lighting, compostion etc of a peice so well and so quickly

thats what really makes this kind of work important to be excited about

imagine if every one could pull this level of image out in a little over an hour

02-28-2004, 03:08 PM
Nice, wonder what each would look like with an hour more time put in. Keep em coming:thumbsup:

02-29-2004, 04:52 AM
Just pointing it out, nice painting tho, Id' like too see the underwater one too!

03-02-2004, 01:36 AM
Admire your work.

You should do some painter tutorials in your upcoming Gnomon Workshop DVDs (if there are any) :applause:

03-06-2004, 05:40 AM
Wow. This is awesome work, Feng. In the first image I really like the choice of colors. Awesome feel to it. I like the semi-abstract style you are going with. Awesome work.

04-01-2004, 12:54 PM
COOL ,I love your work.

04-06-2004, 10:45 AM
 Really GREAT Artwork!!
Feel ashamed on me

04-07-2004, 09:42 PM

i do see the same image twice, so you should edit the URL (_01 would be _02 in the second image)

I like your paintings,
but I think if you want honest critiques, you should post under a different name,
because "Feng Zhu" is a little too famous in the CG world ( just a little tough)

I wish I was you girlfriend,
so you could explain Painter to me too that way :)
She's a very lucky girl to be with you(not only on cg related stuff;) ), I think.

  > that says it all i think

These are really good! I've been watching the dvds and have learned quite a bit. Anyways, it looks like when the CGTalk staff edited the images to put them on their host, the 2nd image's url got messed up, should be this:

Which looks like this:

That's the underwater one, hopefully the staff will fix it soon. :)

04-08-2004, 11:55 AM
So good!!
i love it

04-16-2004, 01:16 AM
Seetle down people. Everyone here seems to be falling over themselves in their quest to be as sycophantic as possible. Critique the work. The 'omygod, you are the best!!!!!' is not a critique.

Feng, the colour and atmosphere are very nice. You're certainly have come a long way with your Pshop skills. As designs go, the ship is far less successful than the shark submarines, which are beautifully thought-out and executed designs....

04-16-2004, 01:19 AM
sorry i should say painter rather than Photoshop :). Again, responding well to the shark designs, less so to the saucer-like vehicle.

04-18-2004, 06:17 PM
You are Feng Zhu? You are god!!!

04-22-2004, 10:17 PM
 it's a masterpiece

04-30-2004, 12:53 PM
I know, as allways, I am a bit late to reply here...

Feng, I admire every work you make. I remember the day a friend of mine told me to go check out your site...I couldn't believe what I saw there...you made it all look soo easy and inspired me to draw even more...I would like to ask you thousands of questions about how you work, but I will leave that to your students. I would have liked to be one of those students, but since I live in Belgium I guess thats a bit hard. I also can't get a hold of your "Gnomen-lesson DVD's", or I should order them by internet...

Anyway, keep spreading your unbelievable talent over the world, so me and many others can learn and be inspired thanks to the utterly fantastic things you do!

P.S. congrats to your new site "sketchgirls.com"

05-20-2004, 06:44 PM
This work is gorgeous. I'm in no position to critique it ;)

I have a silly question though - and I'm not sure this is the appropriate place to ask it, but I'll do so anyway - what size canvas would one start with when creating concept art like this? Is what we see on the screen here the same size it was painted at, or would it originally be painted at a much larger size? Just curious, I guess - if anyone who does this sort of stuff could answer this, it'd be much appreciated ;)

I don't know hot he got to teach, it was a total waste of my money.
