View Full Version : FFII: Chocobo (Kain's new ride)

02 February 2004, 08:08 AM

Well, for those that have seen my Kain model, I plan on making a short animation with him, fighting dragons and building up a side story of sorts.

Anyways, while I was concepting up dragons I decided that Kain needed to have his own Chocobo. I really wanted to pull away from the cutesy style of chocobo's and go for something much darker. It'll be decked out in armor as well. Just blocking out its initial look which i think is coming along very nice.

very original take on the chocobo ;-)
I can't wait for the finished version of this

02 February 2004, 11:05 PM
Very nice - this is gonna compliment your Kain model very well!

02 February 2004, 12:00 AM
just make sure to watch how the armor is layed out. You don't wanna make rigid parts cover it's wings, hence making it unable to fly. B/c right now the back plate looks like it's half interferring.

I'm sure it's pretty obvious to you, but just keep it in mind, before you get to the end then go... oh F... i can't extend it's wings :)

02 February 2004, 12:51 AM
ha that's so true bud.
but I did think about the wings and figured..well they don't fly, chocobos are basically big ol' ostrich like critters. So I probably won't model full unfolding wings. The flap that lays over the wings is just a flap of armor, think leather armor with metal ornate pieces. It's rigid but not at the top where it is it'll be a bone that will act independently of the when its running around the flap will just bounce around. The back piece which is rigid should be ok, since the back feather/tail area will but be slightly moving.

The only areas I'm mainly concerned with is actually with Kain. His mid=lower torso area, and back armor flaps are a major concern I have...should be ok if since the flaps on Kain's back have a decent range of poseability. The legs being propper up above a 90 degree angle might cause clipping, but I don't think I'll have his legged propped up that high.

Anyways, front pic on the way;)

front image is up
thanks again for the comments, and crits they are much appreciated!

02 February 2004, 09:26 AM
sweet jezzus thats great :) i mean wow what a great concept...lets see that baby in poly's now ;)

02 February 2004, 01:34 AM
Wow, nice concept.
You probably already did some research on ostrich riding, if not then here's a few pics.
Only thing that bugs me is the size of Kain and that of the chocobo and the placement off the saddle, isn't it a bit too near the front? Everytime the chocobo brings his head up, his mask will smack Kain in the face. And if Kain leans back, the backedge of the saddle would stick right through him or at least give him lowerback pain.

02 February 2004, 06:08 AM
Great work so far.

02 February 2004, 06:23 AM
thanks for the references! I did research mainly on saddles, and ofcourse the structure of an ostrich, but funny thing is I didn't bother looking at ostrich riding, as their wings and size of their heads differ a bit from a chocobo.
As for the size of Kain, he looks huge <most of my shots so far have been setup to make him feel larger than life> but really looking at the pics of the humans riding the ostrich the ostrich is huge too. Also, Kain's Chocobo won't be your normal cookie-cutter one. Its his personal one, kinda like how Darth Vader had that RAD tie-fighter and the other wingman had lamer ones. I see your point and agree I'll need to move back the ornate dragon head on the saddle. I'll probably omit the pointy edge piece. I threw it in to match the one Kain has on his shoulders. There will be a ton of changes I'm sure once I get to modeling, as I will have to model around Kain. I plan to pose him how I seem him riding the chocobo, then model based off that.

Ok gotta start concepting the dragon and making some maps:P

If you want some real reference, you can come to the Chandler Ostrich Festival on March 12th and watch me race on top of my ostrich.

02 February 2004, 07:56 AM
Matt: if you are serious:P
please snag me some short video of the run cycle with the rider on top...would be good to have;)

"Black Chocobo - Uncommon Chocobo. They can fly, but they can't cross mountains, which seems pretty worthless once you get your Airship, but they can land in forests, which your Airship can't. The good thing with them is, when you get off it, the Black Chocobo will stay where you left it until you go back to it. Once you get back on using the A Button, it'll fly you back to the Chocobo's Village. Nice, huh?"

Picked this up from a walkthrough by Kain Stryder.

Apparently, Black Chocobo's can least in FFII (IV) so expect a small change in the layout of armor. Not sure if the chocobo will be flying in the short but seeing as it looks like he might be a playable character in the polycount joust3d game I should allow for it.

early storyboard stuff coming soon

02 February 2004, 11:47 AM
Nice sketch. I like the style a lot. Cant wait to see how this turns out in 3d.

02 February 2004, 10:58 AM
had a little time today after work so I modeled, and concepted up the background for the little short.

Chocobo is getting there still a hell of a lot of work ahead.

02 February 2004, 12:19 PM
hehe, cool
nice progress so far

02 February 2004, 04:08 PM
Wow I really like the choco head concept. Looks great but I was wondering how the front view looks in 3D. The front view drawing had a really wide head that didnt look quite right, the contrast of a long sharp beak and a narrow head might look nice. Just a possibility. Keep up the good work!

woah !
really great concept !
i cant wait to see it textured and animated !
its really cool to see such a refrashing new version of this bird VS all the toony ones
really cool
keep it up

Did you ever finish this thing modeling man?

04 April 2004, 11:58 PM
I like this guy's style. A lot of sharp modelling that doesn't look too brute.

04 April 2004, 07:09 AM
I agree matt, hope he's still working on this....

04 April 2004, 08:32 AM
Hey, sorry guys I've been extremely busy these last weeks/months. I just took a job out in Massachusetts so I had to drive from Seattle, clear across, not to mention I got engaged and just last week moved into a new place...WHEW. Good news is I picked up a copy of Zbrush 2.0 and will be using it for this model.

It is an amazing piece of software so expect something soon.

Sorry for the hold up

04 April 2004, 09:02 AM
Hey, nice work on the engagement, is it the same girl that you made a model of way back?

ZBrush ey, I'm guessing that means your going to be making a normal map, sweet!

04 April 2004, 11:24 AM
yep same chica. Oct 9th is the big day so its coming up pretty fast.

I'll most definitely be making a normal map, but as well showing some other tricks;)

04 April 2004, 02:33 PM
concept is really nice, looks like you have the new JOUST!

04 April 2004, 10:50 PM
Double congrats! Talk about getting your life together =) Moving, marriage, and a new job. Good luck to ya.

04 April 2004, 05:15 AM
Awesome man. Congrats on the engagment and job. Awesome model man. You are extremely talented man. cool to see some one from Washington close too :D

04 April 2004, 02:52 AM

Looks like I need to change my where-abouts as I am now in Massachusetts...which by the way is an AWESOME place to live.

- updated skin and wraps

09 September 2004, 03:10 AM
That is some seriously awesome shite, man. You gotta put some texturing tutorials on your site. I MUST know your techniques! Share the knowledge, for the love of god!!

Look forward to more,
My Knight (

i agree - that is some VERY nice texture work. could you post the texture map? i would also like to see your technique or at series of texture states. (i'm intrigued by how you started with grayscale - i've seen that done before, but i always slop it up)

really awesome stuff!

DAVID KING over at polycount has a tutorial on his website about the "greyscale" method. He swears by it. His site is under major construction, so I don't know if it's up yet.
Here it is:

09 September 2004, 01:20 PM
Damn! thats some ace texturing!
He sure is an ugly fellow though! - i remember chocobos being cute and feathery!

09 September 2004, 01:58 PM
Great texturing:thumbsup:

02 February 2005, 03:57 PM
bird is now rigged.
This is just a diffuse with skylight. (no bump or spec yet)
the texture is not complete yet either (seams and details still need to be worked on)

02 February 2005, 05:33 PM
This is looking great! I really love the style and detailing. This is some pro work, i am looking forward to seeing this piece finished!

02 February 2005, 07:00 PM
Wow! Back from the grave with this thread. I thought you've abandoned this project. Final result is looking sweet, though. Time well spent indeed.

I go to your website often and love looking at your work. You have some pretty impressive work experience too!(Nintendo, etc.)

02 February 2005, 07:06 PM
WOW. that is incredible can i see a texture sheet?
that facial armour looks asif its bumped and thats just the diffuse sheet :O
i love this!

02 February 2005, 11:08 PM
I really like your characters, and it is really cool to see what you are doing with Kain and his chocobo! I think that the angle you are coming at this from is really interesting; I really hope you make that short with Kain kicking some butt! ;)

02 February 2005, 11:12 PM
Wow, you have some amazing drawing skills:eek:

I went through your page, and saw your 2D/concept works. I must say that concepts that you made now are on totally different level!

Can i ask how did you made that awesome textures for your chocobo?

PS:How long did it took you to make that concepts and model?

02 February 2005, 04:17 PM
Glad to see this didnt end up in the modellers cemetary. Cant wait to see more screens

02 February 2005, 04:41 PM
nothing major...just took out seams, and added some whiskers under the chin and on the back of the neck. I might be adding a couple sparse feathers, and adding some noise to the metal-ish parts. For now I'm gonna say its about 99% done.
on to animating!

Basically the concept didn't take took long if I remember correctly:P This project took forever mainly because of the wings...I went through about 3-4 different types of wings...until I went with this approach. Also, I started a job, moved from Seattle, to Boston, and got married. WHEW!
