View Full Version : character: Talos - Polycount fantasy monsters entry

02-10-2004, 04:50 PM
Thought I'd just share what I've been up to over at polycount's messageboards...

It's for the Fantasy Monsters challenge. Hs name is Talos, he's from Jason and the Argonauts. (the same tale that brought us the hydra, the golden fleece, battles with skeletons, all modeled and animated by Ray Harryhausen)

Contest limitations:
3000 tris
2x 1024X1024 textures for diffuse, bump and spec each.

I'm about 80% of my way through the mesh, a bit more to add, and a bit more to refine...

Any crits or suggestions would be helpful!

Concept Sketch:

Progess so far:

I'll post some wireframes tonight, after I've done a bit more work on him.

(he's not going to be nearly so shiny once I texture him...

Oh hell yes!!! I love all the old Harryhausen films - Clash of the
Titans rules!

You've done a great with the style change, yet it still looks a lot
like the original (I love the empty black eye sockets). I can't wait
to see more progress on this one and I kind of like the shiny
metalic armour on him (it might look cool with some of the green
rust/corrosion that bronze statues get but, keep some shining
parts also.) Anyways, great work!

Cheers Eric22! Yeah, he's definatly getting the corrosion, and the textures are going to be the main departure from the original...

that and the empty armour ;)

Finished Modeling,

Finally finished UVs,

Rigged him up, about 80% done,

Started on texturing...

Cheers Levitateme!

I'll post a pic of his face in a bit, I want to do some texturing on it before focusing in on it... ;)

This is coming along very nicely! Where did you get all those pattern designs from? Or did you create them from scratch? Looks great.

I got the basis for them from research into ancient greek designs and sculpture. Some I followed fairly closely, some I made up in a similar manner. I tell you, it was a real pain doing that stage of the work!!

Final "Work in Progress" shot, I have some tweaks I want to do, and if anybody has any crits, I'll spend the next little while ironing him out before calling him done.

Ok, this is quite cool in my opinion. I've not the experience to crit anything on this, but in your render compilation, I notice that in the three quarter action pose, his right leg looks quite thicker than his left. Is this something that is happening due to animation deformation or something?

Wow, this turned out so cool - and it's so differnt from all the same old crap that everyone always makes. Nothing to crit, it looks top notch!

Oh yeah, if any CGTalk administrators see this - FRONT PAGE!!!!!! It totally deserves it!

sorry, I just had to say that.

I must say that is a killar character.

I Like the dirty version... but maybe one less corroded would do it more justice?

Theres so much detail in the texture i would hate to see it covered in rust and blood... well maybe splashed and smeared obscenely with blood =).

but I think the over all corrosion takes away from the texture.

02-27-2004, 04:47 PM
yeah i think i agree - pull back on the corrosion just a tad (not too much) - man - its just looking great! way cool!

can we see the texture maps? I think it's kinda dark.
