View Full Version : Speed modeling session : theme : posthuman lifeforms

02 February 2004, 01:05 PM
The theme for this session is a bit of a mix between concepting and modeling ; you'll have to model a fancy creature living on earth after mankind's reign, be it a mutated decadent remnant of humanity, evolution of an artificial lifeform, or any evolution of an actual lifeform. You don't have to model the entire creature.

We've decided that the sessions will be weekly now, so this one runs until monday 16 feb.

1-3 hour models(concepting, ref searching, shading, rendering not included - but focus on modeling), provide wires, different views, and concept sketches if possible . Tell how long it took, what software you used.

Be creative, have fun!

02 February 2004, 02:27 PM
Ooooo! I'll see if I can squeeze my schedule for some time for this.. These sessions are a great initiative.

02 February 2004, 04:09 PM
 on the theme and double  on the session extension.

This is going to be really fun.

02 February 2004, 04:39 PM
hope i can find time for such a nice topic

02 February 2004, 11:43 PM
I didnt draw my own concept for this, but used one with permission by Kursad Karatas.

I used wings3d and it took 3 hours.

02 February 2004, 12:17 AM
Wow thats awesome!!
What primitive did you start with by chance? Box or sphere?

Really great stuff!:applause:

02 February 2004, 12:31 AM
Egyt looks very cool can you show a shaded version without wire

whats going on is the speed modeling out? where all the ppl

Mahlikus: Thank you, from a cube, always from a cube for me.

Swag: Thanks, sure I can post one when i get home form work.

Its kind of slow around here now, maybe all are still concepting their own stuff. Lets hope so and maybe we'll see some nice stuff soon.

I made some searchs on human evolution and this migh be what we'll look like in some time.

02 February 2004, 11:34 AM
I'm going to do mine tonight, I'm not sure if I wanna do a cyborg-like humanoid or a molecular lifeform... maybe a robot again? Not very original, don't u think? maybe a virtual entity? a virus? a pair of shoes in a desert and radioactive landscape?

So Michael Jackson's nose isn't freakish, it's just evolved!

02 February 2004, 05:45 PM
Weeee! Deformed mess! My favourite theme!
I want to squeeze this session in somehow, but I dare not make any promises...

Egyt - Very cool stuff!

my first speed modeling woohoo

02 February 2004, 06:47 PM
good idea Windex, now I have an idea

Mwai Kasamale
02 February 2004, 07:03 PM
Well in theory most animals wouldn't change that much. humans have influences the balance of nature but even with that contribution to the imbalance, an asteroid hitting the planet would have more effect that all human interference throughout mans existence. The only evolution influenced by the lack of human beings would have to be that of Dogs, Pigeons, Rats, Mice, Cats, Termites, Fleas, Crows, every Farmed animal (Cows, Pigs, Chickens, Salmon etc) and certain fish. thats about it Literally.

Post Human, Cooler planet, 150% increase in tropical Forrest coverage, Utopia

Cool idea though, I'll get cracking on it this evening.

02 February 2004, 07:06 PM
i made this a few days ago for a cd cover. the face is from poser, that´s why it took less then 2 hours for everything :scream: hope that does count anyways

it´s some bionic/humanoid/snake thing inspired by the tortured souls from the hellraiser movies. only human looking thing left is the perforated face...quite post human imo :D

i used maya. sorry that i don´t have a wire...

of course!

Mwai : the theme is not "influenced by humans" but "after humans" . It can be in 100M years or more if you want. But it can be relative to human's influenc
e too if you want.

02 February 2004, 08:11 PM
let's start at 9 o'clock

02 February 2004, 08:57 PM
Psycho silence,
I think you did a good job texturing that guy and his surroundings tho I am not sure modifying pre modeled heads is challanging your modeling skills too much. Maybe if you add more detail and sophistication to the objects around him.
I could be wrong though- it depends on whether or not you feel doing that type of modifying augments your skills.

I hope to try his thread when I get my hardware problems solved.

JamesMK: Thank you.

And for my lil' Stimpy who thought this was a car here you go :D

02 February 2004, 11:27 PM

This is a glacial gorgon, a creature result of the various climate changes between 24th century and 29th and the postwar radiation...

3 hours (render included) with Max6

02 February 2004, 11:31 PM
Telemaco : that one is great ! I like it very much :applause:

02 February 2004, 11:44 PM

Keep'em coming !

02 February 2004, 01:03 AM
darn! I really love that design.

02 February 2004, 01:52 AM
Modeled in Lightwave.
About 3 hours, although I had to bring the arms in from another model 'cause I ran out of time. Lighting and texture was a little more.

02 February 2004, 02:09 AM
well isnt that interesting? i like it nonetheless. btw, telemaco how did u make the mossy stuff on ur guy?:applause:

02 February 2004, 04:40 AM
tele, were those max materials u used? if so are they new to max 6?

02 February 2004, 07:08 AM
Nice ones so far! :)
My attempt...

This took about an hour to do. Designed in Blender 2.32. Displacement based on procedural textures was used for the skin.

I think its vray displacement, could be wrong tho.

M@, king mob, felleh, come on guys lets see some of your magic.

02 February 2004, 10:04 AM
Yeah, I used vRay displacement to do the gorgon's fur, and a noise-like texture to give colour. This is the head model without colour, model-only:

02 February 2004, 10:58 AM
Man that's an awesome idea! The displacement i mean!
Well, ur gorgon model also rocks, true!
Eh u put some ideas in my mind lol, now i'll just have to start doing something with that fur/rock feel.
Great job!

02 February 2004, 12:47 PM
Um i really dont know, just doodled out a plant and rendered.:/ lol time - just over an hour

02 February 2004, 02:46 PM
happy bot should have my avatar

02 February 2004, 03:55 PM
Here's another. No textures this time, just some colored lights and the internal ray tracer:

Made in about 30 minutes in Blender 2.32.

02 February 2004, 04:56 PM
nice :D

i dont trie it at all... :surprised:

02 February 2004, 04:57 PM
nice one !!!

sry4double post...lame inet :P

02 February 2004, 05:06 PM
Egyt thanks

Telemaco thats crazy :)
the fur looks nice - how long take a render
(what maschine)

02 February 2004, 05:48 PM
robertt, great! espacially the last one! Nice Light-setup!

The other non-blenders are great, too.

02 February 2004, 06:10 PM
The render time depends on the distance, closer renders take more time, and far less time. With my Athlon dual 1500 with 1GB of Ram its 4-5 min to entire figure and 10 min to detailed renders, all at 640x343 and with vRay parameters for stills (adaptative subdivision Min -1 Max 2, GI with irradiance map with min -3 and max -2 and HSph subdivs in -20), the shadow is vRay too, with area and smooth connected.

02 February 2004, 06:30 PM
Hi Robertt,

nice model. i like it.

all the entries are interesting too.

- Satish.

02 February 2004, 07:32 PM
Mine does not compare to your guys but this is a creature I created it is about 1and a half hrs of modeling and another hr for rendering lighting and surfaces and stuff.

02 February 2004, 08:34 PM
this is a weird amphibian creature took me a tad over an hour to complete, just thought it was cool......

02 February 2004, 02:14 PM
MR BINK nice one i like it

and now here is mine it took me about 2h
1.5h for base mesh and 0.5h for zbrush

02 February 2004, 02:40 PM
and here the wire of the basemesh

02 February 2004, 07:37 PM
Hi. Good Job so far everyone! I like particularly Telemaco's and MR BINK's.

But there's too few people responding to the thread! (C'mon people, where are you?) Anyway, in order not to look as one of those people who just whine and don't act, I decided to post. This is something that evolved out of the dumpsters left behind by mankind. It answers to the name of Blob (or would, if it could hear) and just wants to be fed:

Modelled with MAX in about 2.5 hours (am I slow or what? :p) Then I decided to texture it and this is what I came up with before giving up:

This speed modelling threads are excelent. Don't let them die! I'm hoping to see further entries on this one...

02 February 2004, 10:42 PM
good job every1 so far :applause:

ill work on it tomorrow :bounce:

02 February 2004, 11:34 PM
wery nice everyone. keep 'em coming.

I´ll see if I can find some time to spend on a model or two....

M@, I like that you made it to week projekts instead for just some days....but I wonder were all the people have gone. Anyway I´ll try to suport the speed modeling´s awesome!:buttrock:

02 February 2004, 07:00 PM
Cool topic, I will try and find time to enter tomorow,

I have been horribly busy, and today I have valentines plans

02 February 2004, 03:01 PM
Just wanted to have a quick bash at this since I've missed out on the last few sessions. Nothing to get very excited about I'm afraid. The head shape needs a lot more work and overall it's lacking character/originality... Oh well.

It was based loosely on one of my sketches for the LOTR challenge...

02 February 2004, 04:01 PM
I luv the expression on that things face AJ!

02 February 2004, 02:11 AM
hey i know this is totally late, but i DID make it when the session was on, but i never got around to posting it, so here it is

it is a slug thing that is like... sort of the remnants of humans.. and all radiation affected, etc etc, and sad... I used wings3d and i probably took like...1.5hr maybe 2... the model is really unfinished and i would have liked to do more with it, but bah.. lol

I apologize in advance for having to right click and copy/past link

although i suppose you could just save target as.. would be faster no? lol

again, sorry.. lol

02 February 2004, 09:26 PM
I'm a bit late 2.... didn't notice the deadline was that close.

My submission is a tinty, it's a tiny little critter which is about 20 cm in height. They live in tribes containing 10 a 20 other tinty's. And they are omnivores (but fancy meat more then vegetables) they mostly roam at night, hunting and scattering food.

Made in maya, with a bit of procedural shaders and with a simple 3 directional light set-up

02 February 2004, 07:01 PM
Cool models.

Jasel, Would you mind explaining to a noob how you got that "jelly" look to your creature?

I'm trying to get that exact look for a school project I'm working on but being noob, I'm not getting the results I'm after so any pointers would be appreciated.

It's not very good, and it's a total mess, but here is Dolphin man:

Zbrush - 1 hour, freestyled (badly)

(I didn't bother with the hands)

Evolution- 10 mins of scribbling
