View Full Version : Cartoony Game Characters

01-31-2004, 01:03 AM

These are the first three boss characters for an 2d/3d action platformer online game I was hired to work on. The art direction I was given was Pokemon which is why I chose the cell-shaded look. The models are between 1,000 - 1,600 triangles apiece without the black "ink" outline. With the outline the polycount is doubled. The characters will be very large taking up approximately 80% of the screen from game-cam.

It's been a while since I've posted here so I thought I'd share them with my fellow CgTalkers. Questions and comments are welcome although the models are finalized already and not likely to change. I will be doing more characters in the next couple weeks for this project and I will post them too if anyone is interested.

Great work as always! I think you nailed the "pokemon" style on the head, nice job.

Beautiful work as always Erik. The meshes look very good.

The crab is the only one that doesn't look like the concept is there a reason for that ;)

Yeah I got a little carried away drawing the crab and it turned out looking more "Disney" than Pokemon, so I decided to simplify it on the model :)

you are still alive ;)

Sweet work as always m8, Im looking forward to you hitting us with more nice meshes.

Hah! Eric strikes again. Great stuff as always.

What's the online game? Is it a director thing or more like xbox live online?

I guess the outlines are done by backface culling and slightly larger model with a black material?

How about a render without the wires?

01-31-2004, 10:34 PM
Actually it looks like it's just a selection made from the alpha matte of the background. The back face thing would have caused outlines around the arms of the crab and the frog thing.

Erik- I understand the changes in the body and arms of the crab in the model, but IMO the mouht looks a little silly. maybe if it weren't as much of a smile , I dunno.

Hey there Erik,

I apprecaite that the transition from 2d character art to 3d can be a difficult one from time to time, but you've really nailed these!

Nice concept art, and charming characters! Really nice use of colour theory, and I don't see a single unfitting detail no matter how hard I look.

I might have missed it, but how big are the texture maps for these characters?

Look forward to seeing more on this project, and keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and thank you Gil for your endorsement. The textures are 512x512.

For those asking about my articles, Game Artist Perspective will be making a big comeback and moving to it's own dedicated site. I have many exciting new plans underway including switching to a weekly format, which means a new article every week, and featuring more guest authors from throughout the industry for a more varied "perspective".

The url will be We are aiming for a launch date of March 1, so please set your bookmarks.

I remember this thread from ages ago. I never did see all the finals though. Very awesome work. The shader / texturing is fantastic. The renders look like CG'd drawings. very cool.
