View Full Version : Chihiro WIP

01 January 2004, 05:47 PM

I had started few months ago to translate Chihiro in CGI, and now i come back to this model.
I had just began texturing.

As it s my first low-poly human, i need help about hair...
I know that we can t use "2sides" in Max" 's material editor (to show front and back side), and i don t know how to do that.

A friend had said me to duplicate polys, and to flip at 180°.
But are there others technics ?

Critics are welcome, and specialy for hair :)

great job with chihiro, she almost looks like a replica.

01 January 2004, 08:15 PM
wow looks great man

you have really captured the miyasaki look

01 January 2004, 08:15 PM
THis looks great! Are you going to export it for Quake or Unreal by any chance? If so, I'd love a chance to play her (even though Im a guy, heheh) in the game, that'd be totally fun, haha. Get blown away by Chihiro with a huge gun, haha.

Great model though, looks JUST like her! Nice work!

01 January 2004, 08:27 PM
heh, nice stuff. I've never heard of the "Chihiro" thing, but I like the style.

You didn't watch "Spirited Away"?? Ashes over your head!!

Looks really cool. Maybe her mouth is just a bit too small. Rest is fantastic.

Cool looks exactly like the original only the Texture could
be a little more anime color like, really good job :)

Looking pretty true to the original from what I can see. My only crit would be the way the eye is modelled. It looks like a maxsphere primitive which has 1 vertex attached to 9 edges, which might not translate too well in some game engines. You could try using a geosphere primitive instead... you still get the spherical shape, but avoid the vertex problem.

Thats really good!

She looks just like her! - any chance of some more screens and some full wires? Work like this needs to be seen in detail!
Cant find any crits with it really, just that the textures on the bathouse uniform are none existent - i know you are going for an anime look, but it might benefit from a few creases here and there (in cel style of course)

Id love to see some more - Youve made me want to try and give the robot from laputa a shot at modelling....

01 January 2004, 12:42 PM
Thank all :)

If you want :) I don t know how to do that, but if you say me how, why not.
Next one is Haku.

Ok thank a lot !
I can t modify it now cause i had started skinning, but next time i ll remember your advice.

For the Chihiro's red textures, it s normal cause i didn t start clothes' texturing. ;)

You have done a great job capturing miyazaki's style. The model is very well layed out (I can tell you're used to hi-poly modeling by the way you layed out the UVs around the mouth, heh).

I wouldnt' duplicate the backside UVs for the hair because that'll take up a lot more of your texture space (unless you don't have any restrictions for her). create alphamaps for the hair peices that come down over her face and such - the texture will show up on both sides of the polygon face so there's no need to duplicate the front and back sides seperately.

What are your restrictions for this model, texture sizes, polycount etc?

01 January 2004, 10:38 PM
Great Job ! it's really faithful to the original character.
Now i'd like to see it with a pose :)

@ yuki well if you are intristed at getting her into an game engine you should
check out this sites:
The Last Link is normal for Maya users but the realy important steps are usefull because this shows
how to use the Unreal Editor.

Hmm, although I know this is a late post… I can’t see any of the pictures.

I tried to private message "yuki" asking nicely if they were up at another location. This forum says he/she read the private message about a month ago, but I've not yet had any reply yet.

Does anyone else happen to have these pictures saved/uploaded so I can check them out?

I'm interested in seeing how someone has interpreted a 2D character from my favorite film into 3d.

Thanks in advance.

beautiful work.
( big miyazaki fan myself )
this is a real treat to see chihiro fleshed out in 3d properlly.

great work yuki.

(btw.. i'm getting a big red x for the wires pict... i would Really love to see how you modeled this though.)

(for those of you who didn't know.. chihiro is from Spirited Away.)

07 July 2004, 09:06 PM
good work, I recognized chihiro no sen no kamikakushi main char' and that's a good fact to tell u that u did a nice modeling. ;)

07 July 2004, 09:35 PM
WOW i love it, Great work!
Do post some wires please!

07 July 2004, 11:29 PM
Amazing adaptation of the animated 2D character, you've really managed to capture her character. her shoes are probably my favourite part. Very nice work!

07 July 2004, 11:44 PM
Thank you all for your comments.
In fact i had stopped to make her cause now i m on an other personnal work. But after i ll finish her and i would to make the others (Aku, Yubaba etc.)

The wire :

07 July 2004, 11:52 PM
wow... that's her alright! very well done.

07 July 2004, 12:12 AM
Thank you for putting the picture back up again Yuki :)

I am looking forward to the Haku model, are still going to do him?

07 July 2004, 03:58 AM
That is dead-on. Now make a Spirited Away game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

07 July 2004, 10:11 AM
Sweet modeling

The textures from the colored shots could be a bit more pastel-ish; subdued. And that's not really a crit, just a suggestion (because it really is very nice)

07 July 2004, 01:20 PM
As for doing the har so you can make 2 sided planes...duplicate the hair planes and then apply a normal modifier with flip checked. Then you can attach and weld. If you unwrapped your UVs before doing this, you'll get the bonus of having the UVs line up right, so a thick strand of the left of the outside plane with appear correctly (on the right side) of the headside plane.

Get it?

07 July 2004, 03:13 PM
Man - that is dead-on! Simple model and textures but it comes off perfectly!

07 July 2004, 12:31 AM
Thank Ghostscape for your help. I get it :).

Jumbo_Spaceman>textures are low because i had texturised only hair, shooes and the white shirt. I should finish them and skin Chihiro.

By the way, thx all for your comments.

07 July 2004, 12:12 PM
Magnificent! ^_^ I'm really impressed, you managed to capture the essense of the character and style perfectly, it's really very good. I'm especially fond of the use of texture here, it's subtle but manages to represent the original very well.

Any plans to rig and pose her?

07 July 2004, 10:56 AM
> Any plans to rig and pose her?
It s done. Just one cause it s time to play video-game now.
Next one soon.

> Any plans to rig and pose her?

Next one soon. Wonderful! This looks amazing! The leg fold is perhaps a little severe, but it looks just fine. Sugoi~! :)

How many triangles did you use on each hand?

07 July 2004, 04:09 PM
I m sorry i ven t time to finish her face, therefore no expressions. Zannen.

I post a short render for you, i don t know when i ll can to go back on it.

A hand is about 300 tris.

07 July 2004, 05:21 PM
Subarashii na.

Great work, it's really cute especially now that it's rigged. I'm really impressed by how well you managed to emulate the Miyazaki look. :buttrock:

07 July 2004, 05:53 PM
Awesome work..... you have really captured her likeness and personality

07 July 2004, 08:02 PM
Really Cool! Even though it looks dead-on Studio Gibli style, it still has your own personal take on it. Would love to see some animation.

I ll show you how i did it.

At first, it is just a modeling exercice. I just wanted to start from a 2d illustration and to make it in 3d as faithful as possible (faithful ?). Therefor texturing wasn t important for me in this exercice.

Modelised in Max5.5, character studio, Vray render (it s just cause i try to learn it).

First, the model-sheet from Miyazaki-sama :

And i can find many other illustrations in the art-work books.

Next, modeling.

Chihiro shoes :

Chihiro yukata :

Head :

I know that there are many problems. As it was my first low-poly model, i had tried to find interesting modeling technics on Cgtalk.
Before i used to made high-poly models, but with V.G models technics i can optimise them.

3613 tris for the Chihiro yukata version, 3509 for the shoes version.
I needed 1.5 days to modelise her (but i don t know about hours per day) and less that a day fo skining.

For me it s very dificult to realise hair. Next personal work i ll concentrate me on texturing, it will be a nice thing for hair :D.

07 July 2004, 11:27 AM
You captured Chihiro's character and feeling really well, I love what you did :D
I feel the head is a bit too round tho :O probably her cheek to the side. Her head looks a bit more oval in the animation.

07 July 2004, 01:14 PM
Awww cute poses lol (did I say that?)
Although the legs looked warpped a bit.

Seriously thought, thanks for the guide. Cant wait for Haku if you are still planning to do him.
