Could someone be so kind to export an OBJ version of this? Or perhaps a Max file if you're feeling extra generous?

As soon as my pc is working back I will try to export an obj :)

Straight up simple scene OBJ export from Maya. It's just the OBJ so the textures will have to be downloaded from the link in the original post.

Dropbox/7zip file.

Slowly working on organizing a Houdini file. I'll share that when I'm done if no one else has yet.

Awesome, thanks so much!

If I get some free time soon I'll do my best to drop a cleaned up max file online for anyone who may need it.

Here's a max file I saved out with some layers set up.

The OBJ I downloaded had a couple errors, I resolved them as best I could but you may find a few more.

Just the model, all the materials have been stripped. Grab the textures from the original link jojo posted!
Let me know if the link doesn't work.

No AO or any comping added yet.

Cool, well, i decided to change the direction of my key light a bit to be more interesting, as i will have DOF on the table, book and gramaphone in front and my key was hitting there harder than the bed, which would make the viewer's eye get pulled to something that's Dof'ed out, as opposed to a centre subject like the bed.

Im having trouble with the scene in Maya 2014. If I render with MentalRay the scene comes out blank with just the default blue color showing in the render view. If I render with Maya, I get all black except little slivers of geometry for her eyebrows and pupils as if the normals are reversed. Any ideas?

EDIT: I think I figured it out. I hadn't set the project folder yet, so the source images hadn't loaded properly. I'm just getting back into Maya and still a bit rusty.

Cre8
02 February 2014, 01:13 PM
Try assigning a new default shader to everything. I had a similar problem when using the OBJ object provided, some strange things were happening and then when i added the new shader, i saw that there were clearly some polys that needed to flip the other way round, due to normals facing the wrong way.

Maybe post some screenshots of what you are getting from Maya, it might help for a quick answer ;)

New update for my AO Pass.

I usually like an ambient occlusion pass to have a much bigger max distance than that. Instead of just getting darker a few inches around the corner, it's nice to have an AO pass create gradients that run half way up the walls, so the walls get some overall variation in the AO. This helps make more of a GI-like result when you multiply your fill/bounce with the AO.

I've enjoyed this method as well. Using Vray if you enable the AO controls in the indirect illumination settings, you can get AO that automatically reacts to lights in the scene by checking it on and using an override material. Way nicer AOs that really make things pop. (Beats extratex imho.)

To OP, super excited about this challenge, a more relaxed and artsy style than the last interior. Thanks guys for putting this one together.

Also as a heads up the archive downloads with an unpack error for me. I tried a different browser and then it worked fine, so for anyone having download issues just try a different browser.

Cre8

I have extended the range of the AO's reach and can see that it will definitely improve the overall shot.

Thank you for the input, i'm keen to see how my final image will come out with this particular AO approach.

Big thanks for the supplied model. This one is going to be fun for sure. Here is a quick tip for Maya users if your renderings are not coming out. (Blue screen) @Teloni seems to have this issue as well. Go up in the Render settings and reset default settings for the scene. You can do this by going to presets --> Load-->Default settings. This will reset all the presets and let you get a render out. I don't know exactly what is going on in the settings but this method should work fine. I would also go through and delete the supplied lights. I will be posting my work very soon.

First WIP. Playing with lighting still trying to figure out the story I want to tell with the composition. Its a bunch of fun not being contrained with texturing and just being able to throw some lights in and go for it. So far just 2 spot lights, 2 point lights, and an Area light.

Here's a max file I saved out with some layers set up...

Thank you for this. It was helpful. I'll pay it forward. I have an updated file here for vray/max users.

Most of the grunt work is all done here. Textures are assigned as closely as possible. Most maps will need to be adjusted in terms of gamma or composite opacity, etc. Some are checked off because they didn't seem needed but I left them plugged in so we have roughly the same inputs as the maya scene, minus procedural shaders. Those have been clearly named and marked with bright colors. I've instanced a turbosmooth to all the objects that seem to want it as well as setting up wireframe colors and parenting for easy adjustments to the scene. There were a lot of procedural noise overlays that got lost.

The eyelashes, skin shader, and maybe one other might be wonky because they are missing uvs or node names aren't the same between programs and I had to guess. You might want to turn off Vray Exposure control in the environment tab, I think I may have forgot to do that. Here is the link:
Download here. (http://www.diffus3d.com/Outbox/CGTalk/CGTalk_Challenge_36_MaxVray_v01.zip) (Saved down to max 2011)

For those who are rebuilding in other packages like Houdini and Softimage, I have a material cheatsheet here to make it easier to know which map to plug where, if you are going for the original look.

Begining now to assign textures and shaders to the set, i would have loved to be able to pose the character in the shot, but im working with Lightwave, so im having to import the objects and put the image together. Is it rigged in the Maya scene for posing?

Teloni
02 February 2014, 04:10 PM
The model is fully rigged and can be posed in Maya, but the nCloth mesh for her dress doesn't update when I play around with the controls. Im sure theres a way to change that, I just haven't learned much about cloth simulation.

Resetting to defaults fixed the blue screen issues (@prestonplatt Thanks!). Still wonder what was causing it. I thought it might be due to the missing shaders but even after fixing them it wont render unless I use defaults. A few of the books were missing shaders for some reason, and so was the diaphram, and needle on the record player. Also the original IBL sourceimage was missing but I googled the hdr filename and found it online. The only missing connection now is one texture map called corner4.jpg which existed on the original artists desktop. It seems to have been applied to Book1 but I don't see where it was supposed to be mapped to, I just see the error in the script editor.

Thanks AJ for posting that cheat sheet, that helped a lot!

Got a chance to take a crack at this these past few days.

Still only one light with GI. I'm fairly new to VRay, so I'm still trying to get the results I like with VRay Sun/Sky and using proper physical camera settings.

Still not happy with the bed, it's getting really blown out at the moment, will fix for next update.

Hope to see some updates from others soon!

Here is my environment layer so far, i am now going to be generating a Depth Channel for the camera and will be applying that ASAP.

The character will be in a kneeling position next to the bed, praying with the bible open infront of here.

I hope i can figure out how to work the character in Maya as i am a Lightwave 3d user. The cloth sounds a bit scary :)

prestonplatt - Hey thanks man, I watched the reel this came from and kind of drew my inspiration from that. Your is looking nice so far, her skin is looking great, very soft!

Cre8 - I like what you have going so far, you chose a great camera angle. Good luck with the posing, that cloth might give you trouble ;)

Sowiedu - That looks good so far, I prefer the first render, it as a soft, yet foreboding feel to it!

Cre8
02 February 2014, 06:32 AM
nmcelmury: I love the mood that you have set in the shots ;) If you are battling with hotspots, you might even wanna try a colour corrector in comp that pulls down the highlights a bit?
So far it feels like it came straight out of a Tim Burton movie, good job!

Sowiedu: I also prefer the first one, i think what would be a great addition is if you had a more dulled down version of the 2nd one's volumetric light in your first render, soft and moody ;)

prestonplatt: Lovely treatment on the character, very nice SSS going on there ;) The only thing that feels jarring is the level of black shadowing behind her. How would you feel about getting a bit more bounce light in there?I have seen your work from other challenges and always enjoy your art :)

Hi all,
really nice scene!! Thank you for the possibility to work on this!!
This is my first try with these challanges so I hope I am doing it right.
I decided to give it a sort of "candle lit" look with quite saturated colors towards yellow/orange and blue/purple from the sky.
In maya I gave the general look to the scene among with light direction (I didn't want to change the shaders and I didn't want to do too much light linking) using Mental Ray and FG; in Nuke I did the color correction and adjustments using idpasses, RGB lights, occlusion and depth.
The "fake" parts are the smoke and the god rays; for the godrays: I tried 2-3 different ways to get a render layer in Maya (they worked fine with other scenes) but I couldn't get them to work in here.. so I ended up using some shapes in comp (that is fine for static image I think).
I was also thinking to change the pose of the character but I am afraid I won't have time for that.
Let me know what you think!!

This is the straight render from Maya:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640x480q90/856/80qx.jpg

This one is color corrected one.

@ Sowiedu: I like the second one more (the bright one), the character is more visible and you can see more what's going on.

This looks interesting. Maybe I can find some time to get my hands dirty myself. Is post work encouraged? (edit: Seems to be the case.)

@zbugja: I like the angle, reminds me of Vermeer somehow. Just as an idea.
(If someone was to give his render the appearance of a painting in post, would that be seen as within the spirit of the challenge? )
Right now, the red of the carpet is drawing too much attention, though.
(You could use it as a symbol for blood perhaps, but that would be a different scene with different placement of the character. )

@sowiedu: The second one might be an interesting direction, but right now it's just way over the top and I wouldn't call it friendly at all.

So a bit of feedback for this wonderful challenge
@preston great start ! can you post the lighting setup without materials ? just wanted to see the isolated light :) I will lower a bit the "overall" light in the background to give it a more contrasted look
@nmcelmury terrific start ! in the second image the sheets of the beed look a bit overexposed and since they are the most bright part of the image they distract a bit the viewer. Try to change the angle of the illumination and to turn the light a bit down
the velvet material look great !
@cre8 try to softedn a bit the shadows related to the window. Aldo can you post which kind of light you used ? it seems a spotlight since the shadow is a bit distorted you can try also a parallel light to see if the render looks a little less "creepy"
@Sowiedu (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=393833) second variation is great. I will darken the light from the lamp since now it's the focus of your scene a softer light would let observer focus more on the lady.

@All I've recently re-read Jeremy book (http://www.3drender.com/light/index.html) and I warmly suggest anyone to read it if you didn't already do it. It's just an invaluable resource of tips and also will give you strong and solid fundamentals !

@ zbugja: I like the overall look and lighting; I would make the key a bit stronger and visible maybe with some rays coming in from the window (just a suggesion) ; I agree with Noren about the carpet, may be it would fit better with less saturation and lightness.
@ nmcelmury: I really like the look of your renders!! In my opinion the second image (the close up) seems a bit too distorted.
@ prestonplatt: great start, I like it, can't wait to see the rest!

ALLLLLrighty. Finally back with My Second WIP. Took me some time to figure out the mood. I finally went through and made most my own materials to give it the look I want. Still tons of stuff to do and still getting the mood and feel right. Comp Ect.

@jojo1975 Giorgio thanks my man! I actually just changed it up pretty heavily. I will definitely post some making of material here soon. By the way just re read the book as well. love it.

@Cre8 Could not agree more but im leaving the treatment of the girl at the end. Just getting the environment and feel right. And I really appreciate it! The feeling is completely mutual, always nice to see familiar faces.

@zbugja The lighting you have right now is awesome. Its really cool to see the side profile lighting to the scene. Id fix the carpet and desaturate the hair texture

Ok 4th Wip with some light setups. I have 6 Spot lights, 2 Areal lights, and a directional light for the main sunlight. I have 6 spot lights because I did a bunch of light linking.

The only light using Global illumination is the Directional light. I cranked it up a bunch to give it the nice mood. Filled it out with the Area lights.

Using Maya and Mental Ray

The character is too heavy handed on the backlight but overall the idea is coming together.

@prestonplatt:

While the backlight is a bit too strong right now, I like it for the simple fact that it brings out the forms of the face better. You could use your other lights to emphasize those, too.
(E.g. move your bouncelight of the table to shine a bit more from under the face and, if this is a one shot setup, perhaps add a light or move the light from the window a bit away from the camera. Right now the light from the window and its bouncelight are hard to tell apart and add up to a rather flat light, which might have led you to add the strong backlight. )
You could play with the camera and composition a bit more, too, if you want. While it's probably intentional, the picture hanging there in the left upper corner, cut right at the eye, draws a lot of attention.
There is definitely some kind of dialog going on between the two faces, so I'd incorporate the picture or leave it out completely. On the right there is a lot of empty space. You could make this empty room your topic, too, but then I'd give it even more space.
Sorry if I started rambling somewhere along the way, all just my personal point of view, of course, and I really like what you've got so far.

@anishsreedhar:

Other than the volumetric lightbeam, which looks a bit forced to me, I like where you are going. I think there is some kind of candle holder right to her left and top. That might give you to possibility to add another soft rim light and maybe (just maybe) even turn off the lamp in the back. (An exaggerated cigarette glow might be cool, too, in such a dim lighting situation. )

Is there any way to do a good glow effect in mental ray?? I mean not the regular methods like using the light material or using the surface shader mia material combination. Normal glow looks noisy in Linear workflow.

@anishsreedhar: This version seems a lot friendlier to me. The desk is melting a bit into the background, though.

@Fex: Loving it! Perhaps you could bring out the big portrait a little more and lower the DOF effect a bit, then you had three points of interest on the left and some kind of oval compostion going on together with the woman.

at2142 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=460509) I'm very glad you downloaded the file and start your entry.
I would like to see a bit more contrast in the image with some tonal variation.
For everyone I suggest an "old" tutorial (it seems yesterday to me I've read it) which is very good !
http://www.floze.org/2008/07/six-tuts-on-light-and-shade-part-iii.html
also as always Jeremy book ! (it's the most important book I've read in cg and also for his book it seems yesterday I've first read it)

about your image. I find the gramophone in the center of the image a bit too bright and distracting. try to change a bit the angle or the color of it :) Great image so far keep going

To all !
I want to see more post and to get crazy ! POST lighting setup please, WIP are very encouraged ! Keep going !!!

By the way ... did anyone notice that girls dress was wrapped on lowpoly body mesh and chest area is polygonal ? probably author of the scene forgot to subdivide before simming cloth? or this was on purpose ?

Hi Guys,

Great Challenge! Thanks to Clint for letting us use his excellent models.

I have decided to port the scene to the Redshift Renderer (https://www.redshift3d.com/) and enter with that.
Gotta love < 2 minute full GI/IC renders with all the fruit

So, here is the basic port of shaders with an ambient late afternoon light. I have changed some of the textures to taste. Next stop is porting the character, then lighting proper begins :D

right-click>open in new tab/window for 1080p images (forum really should lightbox this... is there a way I don't know about? :) )

@Dr tardis try to increase the caustics if your render support them. it seems a wonderful start and also I'm very interested in having a look at new render engine.
I will start a long vacation and so I will have more time to comment. Continue posting till end of the month ! and then a new challenge will start

HI Dodgeas3d

volumes are very cool looking. can you please share how you actually created these volumes

Dodgeas3d
04 April 2014, 04:41 PM
Volumetric effect are created by volume scatter (Arnold - SItoA) effect, and its cast by lights. I tend to render whole scene in black shader + volumetric scatter, and that I add later on top of final image. Quite simple :)

I will show later visual process if needed.

Hi Everyone,

Here is my first pass at this. I think I will be reworking a few more of the materials and playing with the composition a bit more, but overall this is the direction I want to take.

Rendered using Vray and 3ds Max. Some light touchups in Photoshop.

So in reverse order a bit of feedback :)
@ Dodgeas 3d I really love the volumetrics , very wonderful athmosphere, I would have add a small fill light near the corner just to highlight bettwe the twist ;)
@mirast wonderful rendering, can you post the light setup ? I would probably add a rim light behind the head of the lady. Also it's difficult to understand where the light in the front of her head come from
@Dodgeas 3d I love also the small details. try to improve the caustics of the ring ;)
@chandranathkoley (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=541529) Very good render you can try to add a bit more contrast in post :)
@Eric-Harvey (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=191830) Keep posting ;) I love the start :)
@Aleyx, the scene is a very good start, now you should add a bit of atmosphere to the render. try to shift palette and choose a color scheme for the lighting. You can develop a look also in post no need to rerender
@all !! soon we will start a new challenge ! Keep posting and keep them coming :)

Hi jojo1975, thanks for your feedback
I will post the light setup asap.
I agree with you about rim light and front light. Rim is a composition issue...
The problem with front is that I wanted to make it subtle. It was, and still is :), difficult for me to demonstrate by lighting that there is a window in front of her and not showing the window itself. Subtle but clear... it is a challenge inside challenge :) I want to make front overall light more blue, more blue on a dress and bottom part of her face. It helps I hope :) And sorry for my english.
