01-10-2004, 09:45 PM
This looks interesting guys... I can't do it today, but is there a regular schedule for this kind of thing? I'd like to do it next time.

Feel free to reply AFTER you've finished your model. No sense in cutting into your modelling times :)

01-10-2004, 09:47 PM
can we use multiple tools...ZBrush and wings3d together?

01-10-2004, 09:56 PM
Yea id also like to know if there is a setday/time for this thanks.

01-10-2004, 10:00 PM
1 hour down... 1 to go (for me anyway) :D

This looks interesting guys... I can't do it today, but is there a regular schedule for this kind of thing? I'd like to do it next time.
Starting monday it will be a regular thing plus some other fun things happening too. I'll post more about that monday.

btw, what ever came of the SoCal Maya user group thing?

Go for it... as long as it's a 3d model.

01-10-2004, 10:10 PM
Well this sucks..wife is ready sooner then I though..have to bail. Must do this again.

Here is a ant I was working on. Initial structuring in Zbrush. Construction time so far is 10 minutes.

well, later...some other time.

01-10-2004, 10:11 PM

looking forward to see all of your works

01-10-2004, 11:44 PM
Is the deadline 3 hours from the time of the 1st post???
there should be page on the site (accessed by pushing a small button on the side of the page) that takes you to the "Schedules" page. where you see different schedules and events and deadlines that are happening.... aka calendar just mho

01-10-2004, 11:49 PM
Looks very good..

you should connect these points to avoid the pinching effect.

Basically just go find some reference of a insect you want to model and time yourself. You get 1-3 hours to do as good as you can. Everybody I know limits themselves to 2 hours, and where ever you are just stop there.

01-10-2004, 11:59 PM
Grugi: Thanks. Yeah, I agree, it would have been a better idea to do that. I think I left it as-is for the screenshots because I was wanting separate indentations for the legs, in addition to the cross-pattern on the back. If I do any more with this, I'll be sure to fix it up.

Deadline is closing fast. Looking forward to seeing what everyone produces :)

01-10-2004, 11:59 PM
Nice work guys, its great to see this will be a regular thing soon. I think I will sit this one out though, I don't really feel like doing anything today

An Erased One
01-11-2004, 04:28 AM
Wow, you guys rock...

I tried a mosquito, 2:30 hrs, Software is Cinema4D.

I messed up the head and run out of time, but this is fun! :D

01-11-2004, 04:43 AM
Awesome. It's exactly 8:30 where I am, I'll upload what I get finished by eleven. I also have homework to do, so I won't finish most likely. I have done tons of homework today though, so I am going lazy style. Maybe I'm late for this, but I'm just going to test myself.

By the way, everyone has done really well so far.

01-11-2004, 04:51 AM

Good ideas here, maybe?

edit: oops, I thought there were nore links on my clipboard. I'll try to recover them, I thought a few of the sites were nice. Oh well, if any place can give good ideas, it's google. I am too racey to use my time sometimes.

01-11-2004, 04:53 AM
god its depressing seeing how fast you guys can do such great models. Especially after I've spent a good protion of the day working a low poly model

01-11-2004, 05:20 AM
could sombody please to a timelapse movie of there work. this thread is freaken impressive.

01-11-2004, 05:36 AM
In semi-related news: I killed a black widow spider today in my apartment in a drawer near my bed. Welcome to southern California.

I'm just glad my wife found it and not my son, baby daughter, or dog. It could have been really bad if one of them got bitten.

Anyone care to model?

01-11-2004, 05:42 AM
Dude, not cool. Just be glad it wasn't in one of your socks :D

01-11-2004, 06:08 AM
yikes, with those black widows, don't you only get one freebie? and then you die if you are bitten? something about the anti-venom being as lethal as the bite itself...

fantastic modeling job guys!

01-11-2004, 06:24 AM
Oh well. I ended up doing some dishes and some math, and I haven't even started on the mesh very much. I feel really sad, heh. When is the next one anyways? Actually, I'm lonely. Maybe I'll time myself from now and start over. I guess I'll do that, because I just got myself some mashed potatoes and I can't imagine a better way to use them than as inspiration. Plus 3ds max is pretty good company sometimes, hehe.

I highly reccomend the second site in my last post. Anyways, this can be a marker of my attempt.

01-11-2004, 07:38 AM
Dang, there's some nice stuff in here. I'll have to try the next one, don't have the time at the moment right now.

bored alien
01-11-2004, 07:56 AM
Not quite up to par here, but it was fun to do:

time: 1 hr 45 mins
software: silo

01-11-2004, 09:49 AM
You guys kill me....this stuff is awesome

well---heres my rhino beetle....2hrs....

hope you guys like it...it was just for the fun

01-11-2004, 10:42 AM
I'm really impressed by how everyone tackled this challenge. it was a hard one in my eyes.

but holy crap, m@ you really overdid yourself, really superb insect!! you took this round in my eyes(but I remember you started early!! :D ;) )
(sorry I had to bail you guys yesterday btw.. I feel like a bastard, but I had to go ealier.. it was probably for the best though, my insect was probably the worst model I've ever started :D insects was not my cup of tea..)

looking forward to the next one!

01-11-2004, 11:07 AM
Great work from everyone... What is the website for 'Clay'?
and whats it like for modelling ?

01-11-2004, 11:15 AM
here's the website Troy

but beta testing is not open to public

01-11-2004, 11:35 AM
okay, thanks.

01-11-2004, 12:09 PM
i probably could have spent a bit more time on it. Anyway i stoped at 1hr 10min

01-11-2004, 12:10 PM
2hrs for the bug in maya. i then took it to zbrush 1.55 for about 30-40 min. i was able to subdivide 3 times before it choked! well the good news for me is, i have another model waiting for zbursh 2. i rendered in maya with mental ray. nothing fancy...

01-11-2004, 12:46 PM
can everybody participate in this? even me? (im 15 and ,learning Maya for 5 months)

the only rule is that i have 3 hours to to the bug right?

01-11-2004, 12:53 PM

As far as i know anyone can participate. It was my 1st time posting any of my work here.

any modeling style
1-3 hrs
must post wireframe

i would say go for it. it was a good challange for me. I was able to test how proficient i really was. i also learned that i have a long way to go -- seeing the work that these other artist have put out in the same time puts things in perspective.

01-11-2004, 12:56 PM

thank you :)

ill start work on it soon

1 more thing, i can take brakes right? or i have to work non stop on it couse ive got a test tomorrow :/

01-11-2004, 01:33 PM
Great work everyone! I'm glad you enjoy it as much as I do!
Levitateme: that zbrushing looks great!
fellah:thanks and yeah, I was disappointed to see you quit. Hope to see you next time!
Spirit walker: yeah you can take breaks. Just keep record of the time you already spent. The deadline is far from over now.. but it doesn't matter, that's a kinda "test" session.
Well guys, we'll try to be a bit more organized for the next session, and we'll inform you in advance.

01-11-2004, 01:50 PM

that is a very nice model....great job. I have obviously got some work to do to match your level...LOL!!!

how will we be contacted? email/pm or both? and do you have the days of the week picked out so we can expect it.
i ask because i like it -- this challange pushes me to model things i wouldn't normally try to model.

I am definitly ready for the next one!!!

01-11-2004, 02:10 PM
I'm not sure if I'm too late, but here's my contribution to this great challenge :)

A cartoony mosquito which I might use in an animation. Modeling time 1:30, in Wings. I used some reference pics.

here are some wf views:

01-11-2004, 02:56 PM

I was just curious if you could make more these themes. its neat having insects, it would be fun to have more. can someone here talk to the moderators? someone maybe get a section under modeling or soemthing for this type of thing? i think that would be really neat. i like the speed modeling thread on cgtalk, but i like when it has some direction. cause its kinds hard for me to just think of soemthing and model it under 3 hrs. i think when we have some set of direction here, it makes things more easy. so keep making these insect type threads. i like doing this stuff. it builds on to porfolio!

01-11-2004, 03:25 PM
Indeed there needs a subforum of some-kind cos' I hardly ever enter the CGTalk front page so I missed this thread and only came across the Savannah modelling by chance. m@ had the link in his thread so fortunately I did have a blast in that particular challenge...

As Levitate stated it's a great way to build up a portfolio, to m@ for instigating these fun challenges...

01-11-2004, 03:37 PM
pmatlock, levitateme, samartin : we'll definitely reiterate those sessions, and have more organisation. Some mods are already part of the thing. This one just started a bit in a rush... look forward for more info in this thread or in the speed modelling thread.

01-11-2004, 03:59 PM
Didnt notice this thread until today so heres my contribution to a better world, tho a bit late.
Modeling 3 hours, wings3d.

01-11-2004, 04:34 PM
wow.. what a wonderfull thread

Very good work from all of you

@ Levitateme

Heh.. you did the same model as me ;) , but after your zbrush-tweak, yours looks much better than mine :-D

01-11-2004, 04:52 PM
Great job ya all! i really love the stuff thats coming up here especially the BEetles. I think ill try to participate...workin on the references right now.

Hey levitateme:
How did you give your beetle the organic look. I mean after the wireframe, the rendered ones really look Fantastic! how did you add those irregullarities?? isit modeled in later or using brushes or is it zBrush. I absolutely love ur work!
Oh could i have so close ups on the legs or ur wires :P wanna study it...i really like the look

01-11-2004, 06:43 PM
Ok if you want to do speed models of any subject, you can still go to the sticky thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=114551) . We'll keep you informed about the sessions later.

01-11-2004, 06:45 PM
@ Kinematics: It is written in his post. 2hours in maya and another 30-40 minutes in zbrush.

I think zbrush is the best tool for this kind of session, especially for the detailing.I should use it too next time ;)

01-11-2004, 07:06 PM
I gonna try to find two hours this night to submit some work.
Your idea is really exciting, Mathias !!!

01-11-2004, 07:16 PM
wow, what a great idea... so many terrific entries... way outta my league but... I am sure enjoying the viewing...

my contribution for those of you who are still gonna enter this here Insect speed modeling session and require some very decent reference pics the here's a link for yas...

extreme insect photography (http://frankphillips.com/macro/index.htm)

have fun :)

01-11-2004, 07:57 PM
Great models everyone wow!
Levitateme, your tweaks are awesome.

Zbrush is more then what most people think. 2.0 is going to be too wicked of words.

I too am going to try and find some time today to try and complete this challenge.
Unfortunately I have a painting job for a client today. Maybe later on tonight. This has been really fun. Would love to see/participate in more of these.

01-11-2004, 07:59 PM
Well, here's my attempt. Didn't really turn out the way I had hoped, even after two hours in Wings. Started out as a wasp, and finished as...something.

And my sad looking wire ;]

01-11-2004, 08:05 PM
Really neat stuff guys. I really liked Levitateme's and m@'s models, really nice.

01-11-2004, 08:08 PM
the neat thing about these speed threads is, i like everyones work. i have not seen anything yet that looks like they just didn't enjoy doing this. and anyone here who has used zbrush "current" knows you have a poly limit. so im extremly excited for zbrush 2...once that comes out im sure people's stuff will get nuts. there are SO many things i wanted to do to my beelte but i just cant cause i can't get that denst of a mesh yet.
everyone keep posting neat bugs!

01-11-2004, 08:38 PM
sorry im late. :)

hopefully i can make up for it.

my entry originally sucked so i didnt enter it. because i spent too long on the back of its mid section. so later i got rid of that, made it simpler.. and zbrushed a bit of it.

01-11-2004, 08:48 PM
Wow seriously cool finish on that bug, you did this within 3hours for everything ??? :gobsmacked:

Did you use any reference ???

01-11-2004, 08:49 PM
Is that a zbrush render martin?i really like it, it has a weilded look to to. my favorite so far.

01-11-2004, 08:52 PM
no. unfortunately longer than 3 hours for all of that. kinda rusty from being away from pc the last month or so. the top image is 3 hours.

01-11-2004, 09:14 PM
Does the deadline is really 3 hours after the first post ? In this case it can be cool to anticipate this next time ! So, sorry if I'm later, I hope it was the case.

Modelling done in 1 hour.
Software : 3DSMax 5.1

Another thing, m@ you haven't precise if texturing is authorized, it's would be interesting knowing that.

I'm really enervate not having the time to spend another hour detailling the model,... but I have to work, and deadlines are deadlines...

Keep posting speed modelling thread, Mathias !

01-11-2004, 09:17 PM
oh wow.. my favourite so far too

Great work Martin! how do you do such tiny wrinkles and and bumps in zbrush? even if I set the brushsize to 1, I´m not be able to do those tiny details :/

Did you use a mouse or a pen?

01-11-2004, 09:25 PM
Wow! That's awesome ambient-whisper! I love this speed-modelling stuff. I hope to see more of these threads in the future...

01-11-2004, 09:30 PM

No it's 1-3 hours from the time YOU start modeling. I always say before hand that I'm going to give myself 2 hours and that's it. If I'm not done at the 2 hour mark, oh well, shit happens. Then slap a image together of screen grabs (and possibly a quick and simple render) and post it.

Everybody understands that it's not a finished model so just post whatever you have.

01-11-2004, 09:37 PM
Cool, so I'm not later !!

01-11-2004, 09:38 PM
Alright, I am definately going into this tonight!
Martin that little critter rocks!
Love the ZB tweaks!

01-11-2004, 10:21 PM
Wings was giving me a hard time with a major lag so I had to call it quits. I guess I could post what I did get just for laughs anyways...

01-11-2004, 10:21 PM
Here's a piece of crap I did with King and urg. Hopefully their stuff turned out better :)

Spider (was tired of doing strictly insects [6 legs], so I went with the 8-legged friends). Wings. 1.5 hours.

Damn, not used to signing stuff 04. :\

01-11-2004, 10:24 PM
unitl when can i work?
(ive got a geometry test tomorrow so i couldnt work today :/)

what day i mean, what date

01-11-2004, 10:48 PM
you shouldn't worry about things like that. I'm almost 100% sure there ain't a time-limit like that. just keep to 2-3 hours and have fun and everything will be ok.

01-11-2004, 11:03 PM
spiritwalker: yeah fellah said it, it's about the fun.. post when you wish. We weren't very precise for this session, so we'll move on another one in a couple of days or so.

nicodn: yeah you can texture but the focus here is on modelling..

ambient whisper : nice zbrushing! I like the texture variations. but it would be nice if we focused on what we're able to do under three hours.

Keep 'em coming, good work everyone!

01-11-2004, 11:18 PM
fellah and m@. thanks alot, ill do the bug tomorrow

by the way i love both your works (love everybody works here really, such a high class forum)

fellah saw ur avatr in Expose 1 (i have it :D
i love your stile, the characters are simply amazing, so cartoony like and full of life

m@. the ape warrior u made is amazing

anyway thanks guys it can be stressing sometimes to post in this forum since im only a beginner (a beginner with a will :D
and u are all pro's and it is said clearly that this is a proffesional forum

sorry for my english (proffesional, profecional oh just forget it ;)

01-11-2004, 11:35 PM
Wow! Lotsa great work here. Hope I manage to participate next time.
BTW spiders and scorpions are not insects, theyre Arachnids.

01-12-2004, 12:15 AM
I just wanted to come in and tip my hat to all the great entries, really nice efforts...............Espeascially with time constraints............

Great idea once again M@ and Kingmob........

01-12-2004, 12:17 AM

i really dig "levetateme's" beatle. awsome modeling.

01-12-2004, 12:21 AM
I did another today.

I liked the wasp better... but I wanted to toy with the zbrush beta some, since i always slack with it.

Got a little lumpy on the tail. And I guess some devilish child plucked his wings

fun stuff and grat work guys.

me and m@ got some ideas for other ones so we will keep you all posted, and keep the insects coming.

01-12-2004, 12:42 AM
Great work guys, very inspiring. I'm looking forward to the next one :)

01-12-2004, 12:57 AM

Yeah, it's actually open source, so here's how to build it:

If you're too lazy to do that (or fear for your life and teh reprecusions of attacking the kitchen to build said source code):

[sorry, i couldn't resist.]

01-12-2004, 02:40 PM
AWESOME!!! Finally i can use that so talked about Clay!

hehehe Thanks man :D

01-12-2004, 03:20 PM
Well here is mine. two hours to modell and "texture". And another half hour two testrender and stuff.

Im using maya 5.

edit: I removed the texture and not the bump, so add another 2 min for that. ;)

01-12-2004, 04:50 PM
I gonna be happy to make a try on tomorrow's session !! When will be the beginning ?

01-12-2004, 04:52 PM

Remember guys that the focus is on modeling. It's ok to post a render with your wires but keep'em simple.

Nice work from everyone so far btw.

Those speed modeling threads are really a good idea, Kudos to you guys.

its also fun that its kinda contest/challenge free, something to keep the people that dont want to compete against others participating and are doing it for fun.

small question:

how do you render a wireframe in Maya?????

01-12-2004, 08:26 PM
I belive to do wire render, you are going to use Hardware render. there are other ways i know. but i belive that is the way to do it.

Nice one CobraX.

It is, indeed, a very interresting exercice for everyone, don't hesitate to post; it's not a competition against others, but against your own self.

01-13-2004, 04:51 AM
so this speed modeling thing will be every monday? could we make it on several different days? so people who cant make it on monday still get a chance.
also is it just start when you see the post 3 hours in stop post pic? or do have to start when the post goes up?
also could we maybe get a bit of a warning, like tomorrow get ready for the superhero speed modeling....or whatever, that would be cool for us non USA guys who are up when you are asleep lol :P

BTW i cannot believe how much you guys rock at this, i realise now just how much i suck lol :P

01-13-2004, 04:59 AM
We are starting a new one tomorow, stay tuned.

We hope to have 2 a week, and get a little more organized. but umm.... hey we are just getting this thing started ;)

Basically you just start once your ready. It's a personal deadline. Meaning we will post a theme and then everyone starts when they get time.

And no there will be no warning of that detail. Just a general "we will have new theme's being posted all the time..."

...More info soon...

OMG I can't believe I did it. I am not too sure if I cheated (myself) or not. See, I needed to research ants and was getting nowhere fast. So I switched it to a spider and started from scratch. I found awesome reference material on anatomy and what not. I spent one and a half hours of surfing and printing. I then started sketching some loops over the anatomy to get an idea of what primitive to start with. I am not too sure if this counts as modeling or not. Either way, it helped tons.

Here is what I have to show for it. I have to say I REALLY suprized myself. I had done it all in 2 minutes shy of 3 hours. Bustin hardcore ass in Wings3D.

I might have one too many segments in the legs...but its a really easy fix.

Here is an avi for anyone interested. It is the model rotating with closeups, lowpoly wire and smoothing. I think it is 3ivx but I am not sure. If there are any problems with downloading or playback, please let me know so I can amend the problem ASAP. Let me know of connection speed problems as well please. AVI file is 11mb.

Right Click to Save as. (http://prymevalgraphics.com/Animations/Spider-Flyaround.avi)

Finally, I REALLY have to thank you guys for starting this. I was able to find the creativity and passion to challenge myself and I did it. Boy am I ready for the next one.

01-13-2004, 08:13 AM
do we factor in resech into the 3 hours....i think it should be separate, you know half an hour, 20 min research, then 3 hours on the model. i dunno what do you think?

also, could you make it so that one of the speed models (we need a name for these "tasks" you know so we can say "hey tonight i'm going to: SM, Sp33d, SpeedM, Speem...he he he i like Speem :P)
is on/or near a weekend so that those of us at work dont get fired :P and so family doesnt kill us at home for not getting dinner on :P
just a thought

01-13-2004, 12:53 PM
I think it's just the modelling that needs to come in under the 3hr limit...

Will this be officially announced on the front page then ??? and is there chance of getting a sub forum for different aspects of speed modelling, ie. car modelling, human modelling, etc...

I think that would be well nice, cos' I may for example miss out the car section cos' it may not interest me and keep the thread size down a little bit...

I think a new forum for every type is too much, but a general speed modeling forum would be nice

01-13-2004, 03:02 PM
OOOPS I did mean a speed modelling forum, with sub categories... my mistake...

01-13-2004, 04:35 PM

WOW!This forum is great! It is so funny making a speed model!
And it takes few time too! ;) LOL

01-15-2004, 09:56 AM
I think I'll get in on this, too. I've never done any speed modeling before, so I didn't get as far as I would have liked.
About 3 hours.

01-17-2004, 07:29 AM
Hey all, I really like this thread. I do low poly real time work, so I decided to be "fair" I would model/UV/texture in 3hrs or less.

The spider took me 3.25hrs:

Modeling: 45 min.
UV Mapping: 30 min.
Texturing: 1.75 hr.
Fixing studpid mistake: 15 min.

Program: Maya, Photoshop 7.0

Tris Count: 1900

It has 3 256x256 textures (Color, Spec, Bump). And it has one 128x128 alpha map (hair)

01-24-2004, 06:07 PM
you made that hair with alpha mapping ?? HOW ?

01-25-2004, 07:06 PM
I can't see the images of the lowpoly spider :(

01-26-2004, 05:51 PM
Better late then never...

here's my bug modeled in maya 5.. it's an aphid. I did longer about redering than planned (45 mins), because of testing depth of field stuff. Total time = 3.15 H

Thnx for looking

02-03-2004, 06:50 AM
good the modeling one is basic, it is not very good but I made what I could. .
I wanted to make it as mystic in a temple of martial arts .
: I wait suggestions although you that it tints many errors.
thanke, good models!!! i amassing gods jobs!!

02-03-2004, 04:28 PM
Lizara if you want to make a shot that is "mystic", then bring all the lights up, use high key-to-fill ratios and have strong rim lights. This will give you lots of play with your shadows but not be so overly dark as you are now. You might also try lighting from underneath, for that demon look but it could be adapted to what you're looking to do. Be careful of lighting a shot like you have there, creepy/mystic/dark/shadowy/nightime/etc is not just dark. Right now, you are dangerously underlit and if say, someone were looking at that on a reel, they would simply assume you are trying to cover mistakes in your model and/or texturing. Always try to avoid underlighting! Use blue tones and the contrasty stuff I mentioned earlier to suggest darkness.

Just some pointers!
