* This is the generic speed modelling thread *

post speed modellings on whatever subject you want, purpose is to have fun and to progress!
1~3 hour models.
Everyone can post! tell how long it took, and possibly put wires and tell which soft you used.

look forward for more info about the regular sessions with given themes.

I think this was like 1:10 (?) Maybe a few minutes, more or less. Done in Wings. Sorry for the same subject matter, King. Although, it is interesting how each person gives his animal his own style/personality.

waaaouu, I didnt think this thread would be filled so fast! I planned to do mine in a week or so.. :*)

but seeing all great work(and visualboo to ofcourse :) ) this morning gave me inspiration so I gave it a go.

1 hour and 50 minutes modeling + 25min render setup and PP, and 10 min uploading image and replying to the thread(done during render to save time) :D
(the ear-geometry was reused from an old ear, but still tweaked.)

very fun to test your limits like this, I didnt think I would be able to do it as fast as you guys so I was a little nervous! :D

I think I will try one more soon..

again. superb work everyone! I really like your characters kingmob they have a speciall kindness in their looks, aswell as details enough to make them feel alive.

I really like yours to visualboo. it looks a little smooth now, but I think it will look great with textures. the base absolutely there!

fakie great work, very cute look to it. but ain't the horns a little to 'much forward'? I haven't looked at ref for it, but it feels so.. I can be wrong here though.. :)

and m@, I love yours to as usual! :)

think i gonna join this...

1:30 h (iīm daaaaaaamn solw in maya...) of work (including the shells, excluding texturing and rendertime since iīve got hell of a slow engine [an 800mHz celeron with 384mb of ram] )

modelled with maya out of a polycube (with is i think best for "speedmodelling"):

some light assault rifle with the handle too close to the mag :D

no wire rendered jet... :( and i think it isnīt neccessary :D :D :D

wow so much great work here

fellah really cute monkey! he has lots of personality. I think you were right about my impala. the horns are a tad to far foward and probably not thick enough, although impala's horns ( are kind of weird like that anyways :)

btw, how long have you guys been beta testing Clay? So many of you are using it, it must be great :)

I will probably be doing another speed model today with Levitateme if I can get myself in the mood

I've added another 30 mins to this puppy now, 20 mins tidying up the flow of poly's a fair bit, and weighs in at 328 quads, 10 mins adding a bump map with bump displacement and using a 3 point light setup... I have now finito'd with this...

nice work everyone.

Let me clear it up, this was started as a "Savannah Theme" but I made it a sticky because i figure we could treat it like generic speed modelling, we just happened to have a themed session (which we will be doing everyweek, possibly twice a week, stay tuned)

SO in her eplease post whatever you want that you do quickly, savannah or not, just make it as fast as you can and as good as you can...oh and have fun!

Hi guys,

Great idea this speed modeling thread :) I do think it could have been explained a little better at the initial post, the rules and the theme. I'm sure when the next theme is announced everyone will have a better idea on how it works. :)

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to those responsible for organising this "speed modeling" thread/s.

those beta testing clay, its not really fair to have a fast modeller then challenge the rest of us to do the same in a buggy slow max viewport.
From what I can tell, clay looks to be a very intuitive and easy to learn modeller, my guess with you guys so eager to model everything under the sun must mean it is fast, fun and easy to use.

only a few of us are on clay beta, m@ is even on max, and as you can see his results are nothing short of fantastic.

Clay is a sub-d modeller, it has nice features but it's not going to do any work for you, any app can do it.

and yeah its fast, but then so is Wings, a free modeller available to anyone... you may notice a few great entries that are using that app.

anyways, its all about having fun and learning your tool!

Psycho and everyone else: Even those these are pretty much rule free, please try and keep to the current way were doing this. Instead of doing a head in 10 minutes... spend 2 hours on it and make sure you post a wire. The wire is important because these sessions are all about modeling.

Also, don't even bother with texturing/rendering unless it's really simple.

Remember the focus is modeling.

Can anyone post a link to info on this clay beta plugin?

Most of you are posting top notch work despite the time limit. May have to give this a try. But in the past in order to achieve similar results I have taken 20 hours to do what yall are doing in 2.

Good stuff, people.
I'm pretty new to 3d.
Been picking up bits and pieces here and there in the past couple months.
Could anybody tell me how a simple model like this is done?
Pick an object and a bunch of picture for references.
And then start pushing/pulling CVs/edges/surfaces from a cylinder/cube/sphere?!
Is there any tutorial I can find/folow?!
Some quick help would be great.

I used Aartform Curvy 3D to make these images fast. Modelled and textured from scratch in the times shown:

Psychomecha: 2 hours

GraphitoRobo: 1 hour modelling, 1 hour texturing

Tragedy of Time: Under 2 hours. Fully modelled from scratch.

Speeding done in the last week, wings3d as usual.

First model, about 1 hour. Second about 2 hours and third model is 3 hours.

Would be fun to have a regular session where everybody model the same concept, and then we get to see how different ppl solve different probs.

First speed models ever, and one of my few posts on CGTalk, so Hi =P
I just played on the concept of a speed monster. They probably took about 20 minutes each. I'm hoping to start at this simple level and start building up to more defined and complex shapes.

Lots of fun to model anyway =)

BTW, when's the next speed modelling session? It's been... dead... for a while =)

yeh you can't upload to need to host it elsewhere then link to that, when you enter a correct url then the picture will actually show up in the text box.

Pierdziele - wow man your models are so clean and perfect for how little time it takes you...amazing. excellent work :thumbsup: how do you start your models? do you go poly-by-poly? it kinda looks like you started with a half circle...but it's hard for me to tell - need more experience.

Pierdziele, thank you very much, I love your models! Well defined, very clean topology (no mesh view for the latest? =P). Excellent work anyway

BTW, downloading your timelapse now, can't wait to see! But one note, you may try something other than WMV for compression, as at 88 megs it is a little annoying for me (56K *sigh* lol) but the 5 hour download is well worth the wait! Thanks for sharing! =P

Im not an expert so this model took a total of like 10-15 hours, only cause my poly count was past 1.8 million.....

Mcleon Im not an expert also, but Im curious. How the hell did you end up with 1.8milliion polygons!!! Did you really modeled 10-15 hours strait or was it the render time added?
BTW you could have done one side of the roof with 2-4 facets and a highly detailed texture and a highly detailed bumpmap. Maby you clould have done that, but as I said before: Im not an expert so...yeah. Can't blame me If Im wrong.

you'll get faster in time, don't hurry at the beginning, start with 5 hrs per model and stop then... then start the next model, all you need is routine

03-17-2005, 12:17 AM, once read fantasy thingy mixed up funny thing. must have been an old speedmodeling topic:cry: . I gave myself 1 hour total time to make: the lowlpoly in max and when feel ready to export and zbrush it up. silly, seems i don't find the "funny things"-thread anymore.
so i post it here.

46 minutes max 14 minutes zbrush. 10 minutes render and write post. could have refined it of course in zbrush and gone to level6, but thats not the joke of a speedmodeling session i think. creation method: Draw middlespline. Convert to poly. inset, cut and pull, export and brush. was fun.

so here's an exceptional ugly little pet as result of a 1 hour session. I might give one to m@ as christmasgift for his idea of this great thread. i expect him to nurrish it and tread it with much love. lol

oh, the formerly idea was to take the animal called pigwhale by word, but now it's more a pig-guin. ;)

hey everybody :),

this is sorta my first speed modelling project, started out for a speed modelling challenge on another forum but I missed their tight time limit so I thought I would post it here.

The modelling took 2.5 hours but the texturing/rendering took considerably longer ;).

I read through the threads and see the images on the last page, but I'm confused a little still. Is this just a free for all thing? Will there be some moderation or maybe a reference image of what to speed model every day or week or something? I like the idea, but the implementation is a bit confusing to me still.

Didn't really think of rushing through this. We were in lab doing our stuff and someone played Invader Zim on the projector, then I had the idea to model Gir, the robot there.

Time: Not sure but around 1 hour, I think. I modelled the antenna manually. I mean, without using extrude to curve technique, because I didn't know I could do that.

Software: Maya 7

Would've wanted to make the room better or make the lights better but my class hasn't really gone into rendering and lighting yet. We were just taught how to make lights for now. So that's why the render looks bad. hehehe. Anyway, I'm pleased with my work.

Question though for all of you: The head is made from half a sphere and used a lattice to deform it. I already deleted the history on that object yet it distorts whenever I rotate it. Any explanations? I removed the parenting of the eye group and antenna group already but the head still distorts when I rotate it. Help please?

Yes, with "Strg + Z", "Strg + Y" and "U" in Object/Edit Mode.
Also there is a Undo History callable with "Alt + U". ;)

And the workflow in Blender is really fast, if you know all the Hotkeys ...
but you also can work with the menues.

First post to speed modelling, so I thought I'd keep it simple. This is a 20-minute street lamp that I used the Silo 2.0 beta for, then rendered in Strata CX. Crits always welcome.

this one is more in the form of a question: these models were built as a mix of tris and quads in the Silo beta, then rendered in Strata. Models really only took about 10min per, though my edges are sloppy. I used 2.49 for the index of refraction for a diamond, with a lightdome. How do I get the 'interior structure' of a diamond to be evident?

Had an axle shaft sitting on my desk so I decided to model it. I'll probably end up using it as a mesh for testing various materials just because it looks kinda cool

Modeling was done in maybe 1.5-2 hours, definitely not any longer. Quickly applied a m-ray template chrome with a few minor tweaks, threw on the glare camera shader and done

modeled in max 9. Rendere with mental ray. ( (

Ok, made this for a speed modeling contest on anoter forum. Well, it was a rendering challenge, where it was supposed to make it look as realistic as possible. The first image is wire, the second one is the internal render engine on blender, and the third is yafray plugin render.

Took 15-20 minute to model, 20-30 minute to texture it all, all the parameters and stuff. Then it took 3 minutes on the blender render, and 10 minute rendering time on the yafray one..




does it look okey?

Someone gave me a small souvenir gargoyle from the Naional Cathedral in Washington DC. I didn't take any reference photos, I just had him on my desk while I modeled. The room is a lighting setup I like to use.

Info: Started as a lowly cube and was extruded into an evolved into an alien octopus. I had some issues with the Sculpt Poygon can see what I mean in my attempted 'wrinkles'....(maya should come with something like zbrush, built in.)

heres some of my stuff even though its not even 1/2 as good as most of the stuff on here :P

But I'm only 17 and haven't had anyone teach me nor do I have a job anywhere... (just a hobby right now... but with lots of improvement I'd maybe like a career someday)

Program: Zbrush (I just started using ZBrush yesterday :P)
Render: just a basic shot in ZBrush, no advance lighting, etc...

Time: approximately 45 mins

Demon/alien thing? I just kind of went with it...

If I feel like it I'll touch some areas up (maybe even do a full body model, add textures, eyes, and a bunch of other stuff...

Time: approximately 30 mins
