* This is the generic speed modelling thread *

post speed modellings on whatever subject you want, purpose is to have fun and to progress!
1~3 hour models.
Everyone can post! tell how long it took, and possibly put wires and tell which soft you used.

look forward for more info about the regular sessions with given themes.

Here we go, KingMob and I were in the savannah mood:
(2 hours, 3dsmax5)

01 January 2004, 08:01 PM

If your interested here's my reference picture

Software: Clay

01 January 2004, 03:49 AM
I really love this idea of a speed modelling thread so I have to chip in. I liked the savannah theme too :) Here's an Impala, 2 hours and 20 minutes in Maya

01 January 2004, 04:35 AM
sorry for taking an elephant also, couldnt think of anything else

exactly 1 hour work, its 4:15 am here so I'm getting kinda tired

01 January 2004, 04:55 AM
Nice work guys.

Anders? What'cha got man? I wanna see some fellah style.

01 January 2004, 05:25 AM
I think this was like 1:10 (?) Maybe a few minutes, more or less. Done in Wings. Sorry for the same subject matter, King. Although, it is interesting how each person gives his animal his own style/personality.

01 January 2004, 05:46 AM
Modeling time: 20-60 minutes each.
Software: Rhino and/or 3ds max
Wireframe: too lazy to get it]

slid3:one mad baboon you got there :)

another one:
:) nothing much but i'm focusing on 60min models ;P

01 January 2004, 03:02 PM
waaaouu, I didnt think this thread would be filled so fast! I planned to do mine in a week or so.. :*)

but seeing all great work(and visualboo to ofcourse :) ) this morning gave me inspiration so I gave it a go.

1 hour and 50 minutes modeling + 25min render setup and PP, and 10 min uploading image and replying to the thread(done during render to save time) :D
(the ear-geometry was reused from an old ear, but still tweaked.)

very fun to test your limits like this, I didnt think I would be able to do it as fast as you guys so I was a little nervous! :D

I think I will try one more soon..

again. superb work everyone! I really like your characters kingmob they have a speciall kindness in their looks, aswell as details enough to make them feel alive.

I really like yours to visualboo. it looks a little smooth now, but I think it will look great with textures. the base absolutely there!

fakie great work, very cute look to it. but ain't the horns a little to 'much forward'? I haven't looked at ref for it, but it feels so.. I can be wrong here though.. :)

and m@, I love yours to as usual! :)

01 January 2004, 03:22 PM
great! I'm glad you joined so fast . Your monkey is cute and full of expression! and yes this speed modelling proves itself real fun!

01 January 2004, 04:30 PM
think i gonna join this...

1:30 h (iīm daaaaaaamn solw in maya...) of work (including the shells, excluding texturing and rendertime since iīve got hell of a slow engine [an 800mHz celeron with 384mb of ram] )

modelled with maya out of a polycube (with is i think best for "speedmodelling"):

some light assault rifle with the handle too close to the mag :D

no wire rendered jet... :( and i think it isnīt neccessary :D :D :D

cheers everyone !

01 January 2004, 04:30 PM
Fellah, i really like your monkey the topology is great. everyones is really neat to look at. i plan on starting one today with a friend of mine and we will post here...

01 January 2004, 04:44 PM
PsychoSilence : I don't see your pic...

01 January 2004, 05:56 PM
i feel like i'me flooding this thread!! too much free time, argh..

so i took m@'s idea and made a giraffe as well,
not near as good as his :(, looks more like a cammel or something ;)

Wow great work everyone!

I may do another today or tomorow if inspiration strikes.

Fellah: That monkeys way cool. he looks kind and thoughtfull somehow. nice stuff.

Muckywetnoodle and slid3 and visual boo:

Rock on clay beta testers wooooo!

Uterus: nice giraffe! nothing wrong with multiple animals in the jungle.

mjm : yeah looks like we even did different breeds of rhinos, rock on!

everyone else: Cool stuff, I suppose we can put the human and guns into the Poachers on the savannah haha.

Keep it up everyone, I am glad to see people participating!

01 January 2004, 07:22 PM
Slid, You have to make an apedog of that baboon.......

Great stuff everyone :) Too much people using Clay, makes me want to try it too.

01 January 2004, 09:09 PM
wow so much great work here

fellah really cute monkey! he has lots of personality. I think you were right about my impala. the horns are a tad to far foward and probably not thick enough, although impala's horns ( are kind of weird like that anyways :)

btw, how long have you guys been beta testing Clay? So many of you are using it, it must be great :)

I will probably be doing another speed model today with Levitateme if I can get myself in the mood

01 January 2004, 09:32 PM
Tackled a head this morning. I was shooting for 2hrs but spent another 20 on a mouth. (clay)
Cape Buffalo
nice work peeps!

01 January 2004, 09:32 PM
I was begging for this on the IRC..and now its finally happened.

Ofcourse I, by no way can do the stuff these guys did..I'll take a shot at it.

01 January 2004, 09:45 PM
I thought the subject was to model insects? :D

But anyway, i love the baboon modell!!

01 January 2004, 09:46 PM
Model and reference pictures. Took 4 hours with coffee and internet ... i think, approximately 2 hours ... but i'm not sure ...

01 January 2004, 09:48 PM
KotsVlok: That's the current topic at this thread...

Were all workin on ours now.

01 January 2004, 12:02 AM
hahaahha @ phantom design
'twas funny

01 January 2004, 09:34 AM
Here is my face hugger. i got as far as i could, i at least can go back and finish...but this is far as i could get. notice no face yet...

01 January 2004, 12:32 PM
Levitate that looks wicked...

Well here's my contribution :-

Monitor Lizard, done in LW in a total time of 1h 10mins, all quads...

A frozen wire :-

PS. I love them clay images, when is it going to be released and where can I find info. about it ???

01 January 2004, 06:53 PM
Levitateme, samartin : nice work!

keep posting 'em !

01 January 2004, 06:55 PM
well what a luck i made this guy today in ~2-3hrs

and started texturing him but thats nothing for this thread :D

01 January 2004, 07:00 PM
nice one Neox
could we have a look at the wires?

01 January 2004, 07:18 PM

2671 triangles... currently no 2sided polycount because i didn't finish the matid's and turned everything as 2sided

01 January 2004, 07:27 PM
wow that is demented speed, doing a full char in that time...

do you plan on taking it further ???

01 January 2004, 07:30 PM
i'll texturize him and maybe give him a pose... the proportions are as in our game so i pissbly will bring him in when the game is released and the external modding can start :D

01 January 2004, 08:18 PM
really nice neox, he looks like he would be a lot of fun to animate!

01 January 2004, 09:14 PM
I've added another 30 mins to this puppy now, 20 mins tidying up the flow of poly's a fair bit, and weighs in at 328 quads, 10 mins adding a bump map with bump displacement and using a 3 point light setup... I have now finito'd with this...

01 January 2004, 09:37 PM
This one took me about 2 hours to model and add another 2 for the rigging

I will post the wire later ;)

isn't this supposed to be a savannah mood or something ... ?

01 January 2004, 11:48 AM
mine is :P

01 January 2004, 11:58 AM
Yeah, actually Neox's is quita savannah style..
but no, this is the generic speed modelling thread, post on whatever subject you want. Keep em coming!

01 January 2004, 12:02 PM
well i thought its savvanah too, because i used the link from that insects thread, so i thought this here is the savannah theme... but nevermind i really like this speed modelling stuff, i'll do more when the theme is better :D

01 January 2004, 03:45 PM
Very nice Neox.. youīre damn fast :D.
Ok, here is my try..

Here we go..

Modelling time: 2hours

Soft: 3dsmax 6

Now I will try to add some nice details in zbrush.

01 January 2004, 07:07 PM
i know, i know, another elephant, posting it anyway, 1.5 hours in wings3d

01 January 2004, 07:17 PM
nice work everyone.

Let me clear it up, this was started as a "Savannah Theme" but I made it a sticky because i figure we could treat it like generic speed modelling, we just happened to have a themed session (which we will be doing everyweek, possibly twice a week, stay tuned)

SO in her eplease post whatever you want that you do quickly, savannah or not, just make it as fast as you can and as good as you can...oh and have fun!

01 January 2004, 07:30 PM
i don't know how people keep getting confused here? 3 hrs to model something...thats all that you need to know folks.

01 January 2004, 08:48 PM
took less then 10min. to create this freak...donīt lough please :D :D ;D

Hi guys,

Great idea this speed modeling thread :) I do think it could have been explained a little better at the initial post, the rules and the theme. I'm sure when the next theme is announced everyone will have a better idea on how it works. :)

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to those responsible for organising this "speed modeling" thread/s.

01 January 2004, 06:18 AM
You can see how i made a head on my web page (tutorials section). I used the similar way for all models which i made.

Thanx and sure :)

01 January 2004, 09:10 AM
hey thanks you PAL ! much apprechiate. iīll definitly have a look at your head-tut but gimme the url, itīs not in your signature unforunately :( ! cheers, psycho.

01 January 2004, 11:57 AM
EDIT: Moved to the head speed modelling session here:

01 January 2004, 01:54 PM
not that cool modell, but fun to model... Loads of Bandsaw and smoothshift...!

01 January 2004, 04:20 PM
those beta testing clay, its not really fair to have a fast modeller then challenge the rest of us to do the same in a buggy slow max viewport.
From what I can tell, clay looks to be a very intuitive and easy to learn modeller, my guess with you guys so eager to model everything under the sun must mean it is fast, fun and easy to use.

anyway great work on the models. cool thread.

01 January 2004, 04:59 PM
only a few of us are on clay beta, m@ is even on max, and as you can see his results are nothing short of fantastic.

Clay is a sub-d modeller, it has nice features but it's not going to do any work for you, any app can do it.

and yeah its fast, but then so is Wings, a free modeller available to anyone... you may notice a few great entries that are using that app.

anyways, its all about having fun and learning your tool!

01 January 2004, 05:31 PM
the current session is there :

you can still post here you generic speed models.

Psycho and everyone else: Even those these are pretty much rule free, please try and keep to the current way were doing this. Instead of doing a head in 10 minutes... spend 2 hours on it and make sure you post a wire. The wire is important because these sessions are all about modeling.

Also, don't even bother with texturing/rendering unless it's really simple.

Remember the focus is modeling.

01 January 2004, 06:27 PM
jepp, gottcha but my last two postings were more ment as fun next one is going to be serious ! ;)

01 January 2004, 08:50 PM
Can anyone post a link to info on this clay beta plugin?

Most of you are posting top notch work despite the time limit. May have to give this a try. But in the past in order to achieve similar results I have taken 20 hours to do what yall are doing in 2.

01 January 2004, 10:20 PM
Good stuff, people.
I'm pretty new to 3d.
Been picking up bits and pieces here and there in the past couple months.
Could anybody tell me how a simple model like this is done?
Pick an object and a bunch of picture for references.
And then start pushing/pulling CVs/edges/surfaces from a cylinder/cube/sphere?!
Is there any tutorial I can find/folow?!
Some quick help would be great.
Thanks guys.

01 January 2004, 10:28 PM
Come on guys... will someone finally post the link to the Clay modeller....

01 January 2004, 10:31 PM
I used Aartform Curvy 3D to make these images fast. Modelled and textured from scratch in the times shown:

Psychomecha: 2 hours

GraphitoRobo: 1 hour modelling, 1 hour texturing

Tragedy of Time: Under 2 hours. Fully modelled from scratch.

Stay tuned :D

01 January 2004, 10:34 AM
thanks for the link....

I especially liked the 'please do not harass the beta testers!' part :)

01 January 2004, 06:26 AM
Speed Modelling is the BEST THING to happen to CGTalk since Game Art Design.

I LOVE IT! <3

03 March 2004, 03:45 PM
Speeding done in the last week, wings3d as usual.

First model, about 1 hour. Second about 2 hours and third model is 3 hours.

Would be fun to have a regular session where everybody model the same concept, and then we get to see how different ppl solve different probs.

03 March 2004, 06:17 AM
Modeled face late of summer a one hour.

ZBRUSH Version 2

5 to 7 minutes Per Model

06 June 2004, 10:59 AM
First speed models ever, and one of my few posts on CGTalk, so Hi =P
I just played on the concept of a speed monster. They probably took about 20 minutes each. I'm hoping to start at this simple level and start building up to more defined and complex shapes.

Lots of fun to model anyway =)

BTW, when's the next speed modelling session? It's been... dead... for a while =)

07 July 2004, 01:41 PM

my latest speed model. hellboy

07 July 2004, 06:25 PM
aww, you rock Pierdziele... please post more :)

07 July 2004, 11:35 AM

07 July 2004, 03:33 AM
hmm.. well i guess thats not how you post an image.. how lovely..
yeh you can't upload to need to host it elsewhere then link to that, when you enter a correct url then the picture will actually show up in the text box.

Pierdziele - wow man your models are so clean and perfect for how little time it takes you...amazing. excellent work  how do you start your models? do you go poly-by-poly? it kinda looks like you started with a half circle...but it's hard for me to tell - need more experience.

07 July 2004, 12:58 AM
ok. next speed :)

3h. 3dsmax.

07 July 2004, 08:43 AM
... and this is recorded video of my workflow. modeled in realtime in 3h, video was shortened to 18 min. It takes 92 MB.

07 July 2004, 09:25 AM
nice work... :buttrock:

a mirror please...!

07 July 2004, 09:35 AM
Pierdziele, thank you very much, I love your models! Well defined, very clean topology (no mesh view for the latest? =P). Excellent work anyway

BTW, downloading your timelapse now, can't wait to see! But one note, you may try something other than WMV for compression, as at 88 megs it is a little annoying for me (56K *sigh* lol) but the 5 hour download is well worth the wait! Thanks for sharing! =P

09 September 2004, 03:41 PM
i tried modeling a flying duck but end up it look like apple pie with trash bag wings, manz

are all these done by SOFTIMAGE XSI softwares

@Pierdziele: grat work, really great work!

11 November 2004, 01:35 PM
thanks neox!

next speed :)

12 December 2004, 05:30 AM
Im not an expert so this model took a total of like 10-15 hours, only cause my poly count was past 1.8 million.....
Done in: gMax
No wires available...

01 January 2005, 05:54 PM
Mcleon Im not an expert also, but Im curious. How the hell did you end up with 1.8milliion polygons!!! Did you really modeled 10-15 hours strait or was it the render time added?
BTW you could have done one side of the roof with 2-4 facets and a highly detailed texture and a highly detailed bumpmap. Maby you clould have done that, but as I said before: Im not an expert so...yeah. Can't blame me If Im wrong.

02 February 2005, 07:00 AM
did this for xsibase's 3d fight club.

02 February 2005, 09:56 PM
KWAK: realy nice, i wish i could do such things in that time

ok in order to seek for "forgiveness" ^_^ i've modeled somethin to post here.
3dsmax, 4 hours , meshsmooth 1 iteration.

:( it's a shame i cant model a complete head in that time like u guys did. ( (

well, at least was a good study session. learned some more tricks about getting rid of some triangles.

03 March 2005, 06:00 PM
you'll get faster in time, don't hurry at the beginning, start with 5 hrs per model and stop then... then start the next model, all you need is routine

03 March 2005, 07:05 PM
Second try to model something with blender, really a newb in that program so this took
me 10-11 hours to complete

Don Kayote
03 March 2005, 04:30 PM
40 minutes in Silo. Silo kicks ass! (

Don't bother counting the n-gons, There're just too many :)

Don Kayote
03 March 2005, 02:16 AM
YAY! 40 minutes in Silo again. (

There's more n-gons then quads this time. :scream:

ps: isn't it ironic that a speed modeling thread takes forever for anyone to reply.

03 March 2005, 12:17 AM, once read fantasy thingy mixed up funny thing. must have been an old speedmodeling topic:cry: . I gave myself 1 hour total time to make: the lowlpoly in max and when feel ready to export and zbrush it up. silly, seems i don't find the "funny things"-thread anymore.
so i post it here.

46 minutes max 14 minutes zbrush. 10 minutes render and write post. could have refined it of course in zbrush and gone to level6, but thats not the joke of a speedmodeling session i think. creation method: Draw middlespline. Convert to poly. inset, cut and pull, export and brush. was fun.

so here's an exceptional ugly little pet as result of a 1 hour session. I might give one to m@ as christmasgift for his idea of this great thread. i expect him to nurrish it and tread it with much love. lol

oh, the formerly idea was to take the animal called pigwhale by word, but now it's more a pig-guin. ;)

here is one i did yesterday

09 September 2006, 01:13 PM
hey everybody :),

this is sorta my first speed modelling project, started out for a speed modelling challenge on another forum but I missed their tight time limit so I thought I would post it here.

The modelling took 2.5 hours but the texturing/rendering took considerably longer ;).

Here is a claw I modelled. I am a programmer, not really an artist, I am still a beginner at modelling really. :-)

Title: Claw
Time taken: ~3 hrs
Software used: gSculpt

Solid view:

It was modelled in gSculpt (, a free 3D modeller.

Here is the gSculpt project file: Claw (

gSculpt allows you to see the entire construction history for the model, so you can take a look at my modelling process if you wish. Please see the Viewing a gSculpt modelling tutorial ( section of the Documentation ( page on the gSculpt website for instructions on how to do this.

Formula 1 Track - Done for interview with SEGA

5- Hours
3ds Max

12 December 2006, 08:54 PM
I read through the threads and see the images on the last page, but I'm confused a little still. Is this just a free for all thing? Will there be some moderation or maybe a reference image of what to speed model every day or week or something? I like the idea, but the implementation is a bit confusing to me still.

01 January 2007, 03:43 PM
Hi, I have done this model for a speed competition at The idea was to model a toy in less than two hours.
The model is done in 3dmax7, took 1hr 48 mins.
Done with polymodeling.
I attach some pics of the modeling process
C&C welcome.

03 March 2007, 08:14 AM
Didn't really think of rushing through this. We were in lab doing our stuff and someone played Invader Zim on the projector, then I had the idea to model Gir, the robot there.

Time: Not sure but around 1 hour, I think. I modelled the antenna manually. I mean, without using extrude to curve technique, because I didn't know I could do that.

Software: Maya 7

Would've wanted to make the room better or make the lights better but my class hasn't really gone into rendering and lighting yet. We were just taught how to make lights for now. So that's why the render looks bad. hehehe. Anyway, I'm pleased with my work.

Question though for all of you: The head is made from half a sphere and used a lattice to deform it. I already deleted the history on that object yet it distorts whenever I rotate it. Any explanations? I removed the parenting of the eye group and antenna group already but the head still distorts when I rotate it. Help please?

Nice rifle. I just can't get into blender. the work flow is too different. Did they ever add undo?

Great job

03 March 2007, 02:06 PM
Yes, with "Strg + Z", "Strg + Y" and "U" in Object/Edit Mode.
Also there is a Undo History callable with "Alt + U". ;)

And the workflow in Blender is really fast, if you know all the Hotkeys ...
but you also can work with the menues.

03 March 2007, 02:31 AM
did it this weekend, mustang boss. If I have time, will make it more detailed.
I will call it speed low poly model for now,lol

04 April 2007, 06:51 PM
Made this rubix cube yesterday in about 25 mins, am fairly new to 3D modelling and really learning all about it. What do you think?

04 April 2007, 04:09 PM
I spent for 1,5 hrs for the model..

The Educated Dragon

Modeled in 3 to 4 hours from a drawing I did some time ago.

Base mesh modeled in studio Max

High Res Mesh in Zbrush

Status: Unfinished

I’m relatively new to Zbrush and am planning to do loads more models as quickly as I can to improve.

The arms, hands and feet need some work. What do you think?

Thanks for looking!

05 May 2007, 08:18 PM
Hi all...
I had some free time so i decided to make a little speed modeling session.
And this Alien was coming out of it. :D

I made this one with Blender
Took me about 4 hours to model it.

05 May 2007, 01:55 PM
Hi there,
i've seen really many nice works, so here i tried to do my best...
The base modeling in Wings3D and final part is ZB3. (

05 May 2007, 03:31 AM
thanks guys!

06 June 2007, 05:26 PM
So I got bored this morning and modeled the first thing in sight. It took about 1.5 hours in blender.

07 July 2007, 04:53 PM
First post to speed modelling, so I thought I'd keep it simple. This is a 20-minute street lamp that I used the Silo 2.0 beta for, then rendered in Strata CX. Crits always welcome.

07 July 2007, 05:08 PM
this one is more in the form of a question: these models were built as a mix of tris and quads in the Silo beta, then rendered in Strata. Models really only took about 10min per, though my edges are sloppy. I used 2.49 for the index of refraction for a diamond, with a lightdome. How do I get the 'interior structure' of a diamond to be evident?

07 July 2007, 10:03 PM

This is Bugatti T50, great car! I hope you like it, this is my second job in 3dsMax, I don't like the result in .jpg but the .bmp is too large... :scream:

Time: 5 hours.

My portfolio ->

07 July 2007, 10:10 PM
Had an axle shaft sitting on my desk so I decided to model it. I'll probably end up using it as a mesh for testing various materials just because it looks kinda cool

Modeling was done in maybe 1.5-2 hours, definitely not any longer. Quickly applied a m-ray template chrome with a few minor tweaks, threw on the glare camera shader and done

modeled in max 9. Rendere with mental ray. ( (

12 December 2007, 11:47 PM
Ok, made this for a speed modeling contest on anoter forum. Well, it was a rendering challenge, where it was supposed to make it look as realistic as possible. The first image is wire, the second one is the internal render engine on blender, and the third is yafray plugin render.

Took 15-20 minute to model, 20-30 minute to texture it all, all the parameters and stuff. Then it took 3 minutes on the blender render, and 10 minute rendering time on the yafray one..

does it look okey?

Hey, did a speed model, uv, texture, rig, and animation run. Already posted it on the finished animation thread, but so the people looking for speed runs can find it --

Hope you enjoy.

3 hours give or take. Maya. Smoothed Polys. No rigging, modeled in the pose.

Someone gave me a small souvenir gargoyle from the Naional Cathedral in Washington DC. I didn't take any reference photos, I just had him on my desk while I modeled. The room is a lighting setup I like to use.

When I get some time I will have to start practicing and get my times down to something reasonable like this

01 January 2009, 12:09 AM
heres some of my stuff even though its not even 1/2 as good as most of the stuff on here :P

But I'm only 17 and haven't had anyone teach me nor do I have a job anywhere... (just a hobby right now... but with lots of improvement I'd maybe like a career someday)

Program: Zbrush (I just started using ZBrush yesterday :P)
Render: just a basic shot in ZBrush, no advance lighting, etc...

Time: approximately 45 mins

Demon/alien thing? I just kind of went with it...

If I feel like it I'll touch some areas up (maybe even do a full body model, add textures, eyes, and a bunch of other stuff...

Time: approximately 30 mins

Cowmonkeyman? :P

Also incomplete... just a quick model..

Program: 3ds Max
Render: Default Scanline <_<

Time: about 4 1/2 hours for each

quick recreation of Wall-E... needs more smoothing.. and just has fill in colors for textures more or less... I can do a lot more to it if I feel motivated to... (Wall-E is the sole property of Pixar, and I only did a fan based recreation)

quick recreation of Mike... also just fill in colors with a little specular for textures... could also do much more for this... (Mike is the sole property of Pixar, and I only did a fan based recreation)

But anyway heres some of my stuff... I know it doesn't even compare to the stuff on here but I have to start somewhere... ;)
