View Full Version : Game Art Comp 5: Runefall: (US) FF II's Cecil

I'll be doing the Paladin version of Cecil. Here's his sprite for those who need their memories jogged:

I'm making good progress on his model, I'll post up a progress shot tommorrow.
I don't have a scanner, so I won't be able to post up concept art till school starts back up in a week.

Here's where I'm at so far, creating the basic form of the character. I've still got a long way to go. His proportions may be a bit too plain, so I may have to change them up later to make him more visually interesting. I'll wait till I'm close to done before I play around with that, though. I took some que's from drawings of Cecil by Yoshitaka Amano.
C&C is always appreciated.

NOTE: This head is NOT the one I'll be using for him. It's just a place holder from a different character, till I get around to modelling the head. I usually do the head last (I establish the 'feel' of the character while working on the body, then use that when creating the head).

you really need to find some reference of a male body to model this off of... the chest doesnt exist, and the hands look pretty funky from the angles you gave us. go find a front and side profile of a guy so you cn fix that stuff.

Thanks for the comment.
His chest is non existant cause I'll be putting some armor over it. I'll dig up some reference and rework him tonight, check back tommorrow for an update.

Here's an update. I rebuilt him against a model sheet by Loomis to get the proportions down, although I think he needs to be

Another update, lots of progress. The long polygons hanging from his pauldrons will be priest-like cloths. I need to add a few edges in there to rig them. He is mostly unwrapped as well. But before I start texturing, I need to model his head, finish his arms, waist, and sword. Unfortunately I can't scan my concept art till school starts, so I can have access to scanners.

As a reminder, the head isn't his. It's just a placeholder until I model the actual head, which I usually do last.

More work done. Almost finished modelling head and hair, although it needs alot of tweaking. C&C appreciated

Okay, lets see if I can get some kind of response. Maybe I should have done a more popular character?

I need some crits on Cecil's head.
NOTE: I'm not going for a perfectly anatomical head. I'm trying to blend in a bit of anime, since he is a FF character. Thus I have deviated in places, such as the enlarged eyes and extended chin. So don't go into too much anatomical detail please. Just let me know if anything looks overtly off, or if there's something I could change to enhance the character of the head.

I changed his head gaurd and added the ruby from the sprite. Looks pretty good. Let me know what you think.

Been a long time since I updated. Here's the almost done texture. I've fixed the texture artifacts visible in this shot.

Nice start, the contrast on the yellow stuff could be less though

Hmm, I don't like the legs. Everything seems to look right until you get to the knees, everything below seems too short...

The rest of the body seems fine though...

02 February 2004, 08:47 PM
Yup, I think the underleggs need to be longer or the knee should be placed higher

You used any anatomy and or proportional refrence material when creating this model? If not I seriously recomend it.

My bad, I should've posted a whole body shot. The last body pic on the thread is old, I've fixed it up alot since then.
When I was first modelling, I used a proportion sketch from Loomis. They looked too short to me too, but that's how it was in the sketch. I eventually made them longer.
Thanks for the crits, I guess you'll see the final result at the end of the week when the contest is done.
