01 January 2002, 03:50 PM
at first I didn't wanna contribute here among all the great artists. but, I just couldn't hold it any longer, I wanna be in this challange to! :D
so, here's my contribution... took me 2 days from sketch to model.
I just hope I'll have enough inspiration to complete this before februari the first.
enough talk, the model:
I would be glad to get some critic, just to help me get the inspiration to finish this one :)
PS: sigma, thanks for the tip.

thanks for the comment el gatto, I'm workin' on the pirate stuff and Prosthetic parts right now.
I just wanted to model him "right" before I started to deform and add details to him.

01 January 2002, 01:07 PM
really great Fellah!! you just have to see this guy to start to think about great adventures and animations! don't you want to model his crew too?
01 January 2002, 01:31 PM
LOL That's great. Nice to see another cartoony character. :D
01 January 2002, 05:37 AM
wow, I got really glad to see so many positive replies, thanks all!
pascal, I didn't but now I do :)
01 January 2002, 05:43 AM
That's, that's perfect, just perfect ! A simple and fast answer to the chalenge.
Efficient man ! you've got my support !
BTW, how do we vote ?
01 January 2002, 06:24 PM
wieeee, just a couple of days left now! *hurries*
the _model_ is actually done right now, I have added some stuff on him that isn't shown in the post above but I won't show all that right now.
one of the things I've added since the last post is this sword:
some texturing on his foot of tree:
btw, this challenge is _great_! it has really got me inspired to _work_. I haven't worked\learned this much in a short time like this ever!!!
I'm really gratefull to those who got this challenge running, thanks!
01 January 2002, 07:27 PM
He is great, absolutely teaming with character, it has been so cool seeing so many different approaches.
01 January 2002, 08:14 PM
thanks for the comment vertex, I really appreciate it.
btw, I really need some help with the rules.
3) Alien like (well... I haven't seen anyone like this on earth :D but does it qualify?)
4) Big hands and feet (are they big enough?)
8) an item in hand, like weapon, magic item or spoon (?!) (we'll, I'm in the process of adding a spoon :) )
can anyone who know this please tell me, I have put so much work on this guy that I would be really sad if I miss a thing and get "disqualified" in the end.
01 January 2002, 07:02 AM
Don't worry, IMHO, your character fits perfectly with the rules.
BUT : I'd like to see bigger renders !!! Your last update is just sooooooo cool ! Did you try to render this with some HDRI ?
01 January 2002, 12:29 PM
thanks facial deluxe, I hope you're right. and btw, I tried to render it with HDRI as you mentioned and the results got much better (especially on the gold and silver parts)
I'll post some larger renderings as well as different views on him when he's finished. again, thanks for the help facial deluxe!
01 January 2002, 05:22 PM
hahaha!! miss pirata 2002 :D
Good character!! I love comic ones!
Excelent Illumination
The chest would be brown.
01 January 2002, 05:39 PM
Excellent Cartoon Model. Superb style, this would be amazing animated. :) :)
Ahoy there mateys, crack open a barrel of FUN..
Battle scenes could be hilarious. I love it.
01 January 2002, 07:55 PM
Yeah, really excellent !
maybe the hands a little bigger and less naked ;)
I love the prosthetic foot, much less the real one !
01 January 2002, 08:39 PM
very funny style !
i love that GI lightwave render. i try to fake that in maya
but its not the same.
keep up the fun work
01 January 2002, 09:56 AM
wow, to see all these positive replies was a really good start in the morning, thanks all!
pabbloz, I changed the color to a slightly brown one and it got much better, thanks for the tip!
Hmura, do you mind if I use that line ("Ahoy there mateys, crack open a barrel of FUN") in the upcoming short? :D
Joebount, I made his hands a little bit larger and added a small texture to 'em, great tip!
kadde, thanks! it's actually even better now when I used HDRI to light it :)
01 January 2002, 01:22 PM
Looking again at your last render I think it could do with being a little brighter, it looks a little overcast. maybe add a keylight just to add some highlights.
Its still excellent though.
01 January 2002, 02:39 PM
Go ahead m8, :)
01 January 2002, 02:44 PM
Does he have a tail yet??
01 January 2002, 12:42 AM
again, thanks for all the comments!
vertex, I hope this update has fixed the thing you meant. the gold
and silver parts got alot better when I used HDRI to light the scene.
Wintermute, yes ha has :) I'll render some closeups soon.
well, the update:
still some things to fix. the right arm got a weird deformation, it looks kinda flat now as you can probably see on the last render. I'll also have to add the "hand texture" and tweak the right hand some.
anything else someone can comment on would be highly appreciated.
02 February 2002, 02:22 AM
comments are of course much appreciated :D
02 February 2002, 03:31 AM
It seems it's time for everybody to give its copy back ...Héhé.
Beautiful image. I love the overal coloring, it is warm. Love the sword too, nice metal.
The only thing, IMHO, are the mykey mouse gloves. I think it deserve a litlle bit, the rest of the design is more (better) personnal, it is you really
But that's a detail, I love this guy!
02 February 2002, 04:19 PM
Good stuff man
I vote for you !..
Really like your style...
02 February 2002, 04:25 PM
a cartoon character, really rare in this challenge, I like it, to me there is more creativity in this sort of characters than in basic aliens
I just find the arms thin ( fin en francais) and the hands look like mickeys'one, I think it will be better with leather gloves
02 February 2002, 01:43 AM
thanks all for your kind comments,
facial deluxe, the "metalLook" is actually thanks to you and your HDRI tip :)
I'll see what I can do about the "mickey mouse" gloves to, they where actually made to be "mickeyMouse gloves" but I'll try to change that as well as the thin arms in the future. it'll probably be in a month or so 'cause right now I've started to sketch for the new challenge, man I can't wait until all the great art's going to pop out from everyone here :)
once again thanks for all the comments, in fact, if I haden't got these replies I would probably have stopped in a very early state of this character, those comments really helped me finish the guy,
once again thanks all!
