Hey, you've got a nice start on the site. For the Junior/Senior sections, will you be posting suggestions on how to export animated scenes from packages like 3dsmax/maya and render them out using a Renderman Renderer?

Basically, what I want to do is model/animate with max/maya and render them out using a Renderman Renderer with my own shaders.

I did this once using BMRT, but it was a bit of a pain translating/tweaking a max scene to RIB... It'd be nice to know what's the best way to do this using only the FREE versions of Renderman Renderers.

I also think shedding more light on 3rd party connections like Mayaman and Softman would be helpful.

Also check out the Renderman Repository (

Two apps I liked to use when messing around with BMRT, back in the day: TkMatMan ( and RenderWrapper ( . BMRT is no longer available, so these might not work.

Hello guys

The RenderMan Academy is focused on writing tutorials that deal with the RenderMan standard. We try no to go into specifics of all the available translators or 3d apps that support or could support RenderMan output. If we did we would never finish it since it would be a huge site. With a thorough understanding of the RI API, RIB and RSL you can get work done with either of the available programs or exporters.
There is a discussion forum for MayaMan, SoftMan and MaxMan as well as one for RAT and for liquid. We also have a forum that deals with connecting a RenderMan renderer with the mayor 3D apps (Max, Maya, XSI, Houdini). Here you can get help on those exporters.

I am working on a free 3DS MAX to RenderMan exporter that I will make available on the academy asap. You could use that to export the scenes or as a base to create your own exporter

I am currently working on a Max -> RenderMan product, and am currently accepting beta testers.

I have also a free Lightwave to RenderMan exporter ( The development has been stalled for some time but when I find more incentive I'll start again.
