Hi all,

Here's a piece I was intending for the ALienware competition. Although I was intending on participating, I later decided against it. I found it redundant to go and reproduce this scene in 3d. For something that is suppose to end up as a still I found the constraint of having it "primarily 3d" quire strange. That would mean that I would have to spend a week on buiding a 3d version of this scene. I saw no benefit in it(except for the competition) so I opted against it. In reality I would probably do this scene as a matte apinting anyways. But rules are rules...and here's my effort on a conceptual level!

yaaahaa!! matte painting is always awsome!
only one thing: the left "blured column" is a bit too blured. it looks like a tornado.
nice work eshiu

12-30-2003, 09:27 AM
just to be clear ...this is a conceptual painting not a matte painting. Painting time was 1 day with photoshop. Thanks!

12-30-2003, 12:48 PM
sorry

12-30-2003, 06:28 PM
Great painting....I don't feel that any aprt looks like a tornado//!!oh well everyone has thier opinion.....I think this deserve a front page plug....but who am i.....Seems like barely anyone even looks at this 2d forum....:(

12-30-2003, 06:32 PM
Hey....dont even worry about it....I just wanted to make sure people knew!

12-31-2003, 07:15 AM
thanks mrman...unfortunately ithink you may be right....not many people here in the 2d realm.....

01-01-2004, 01:39 AM
i updated the image to a final concept....any feedback would be great!

01-01-2004, 08:39 PM
hmmm...It looks prety much the same ...maybe its a little tighter....I think the last one was great alreay! Maybe you should post a comparision.....great work anyways...pity no ones giving any feedback though.

01-03-2004, 12:19 AM
damn.... very cool..

01-03-2004, 05:30 AM
man outstanding work...very impressive

This is a fantastic painting. I love the atmosphere, superbly done. Generally I would feel that green in an alien world would be a bit clichéd, but I think it works really well here, and the yellowish tones that creep in are great too.

It is a pity that you decided not to go ahead and create the scene in 3D, because seeing this in 3D would be phenomenal :D

Great work regardless, and I've plugged it on the front page :)

It's great. I would say it would be worth building in 3D just to try to win the contest. Also I'm sure you could do some nice animation with it, particle, lights, camera... it's very original.

01-03-2004, 10:50 AM
it's strange and fantastic!! I like the ambiance and the color than you used!! :applause:

01-03-2004, 11:48 AM
very cool

01-03-2004, 11:52 AM
I dunno, $6K worth of hardware is pretty good incentive and with an image like that the odds are definitely in your favor!

I have a feeling 3D wouldn't add much to this image and the vertical layout requirement of the contest might ruin it...

Excellent work!

hi! i think this is one of the most interesting alien-world interpretations i've seen in years.
now that i think of it: it got a touch of that asteroid's surface in the "armageddon" movie. a slight one.

anyways, most interesting picture. looking at it makes me shiver in my warm room with all that snow outside the window. i like the mood very much!

01-03-2004, 05:46 PM
Really nice ambience great choice of color ... i am sure that it would have been great in 3D. But you still get a great piece for your portfolio

waaaaaaaaaaaaaa:drool: i wiss i could do that:cry: anyways excellent work!

Great job on the scaling. It has alot of depth. The landscape is very dynamic and the atmospheric effects give a lot to the feel. The only thing I can say it might be missing are some foreground elements. Awesome work man. :buttrock:

01-03-2004, 09:42 PM
great work. The color choices are dope as hell.

01-03-2004, 10:09 PM
very impressive. Too bad you don't participate in the alienware challenge, but I understand your arguments.

keep it up!

good work ! ;)

Hi there!

I understand very well why you let go of Alienware. Even if I would have had enough talent to enter, I would'nt have because of all the rules and also the terms and conditions.
Only criticism: I indeed think the leftmost column looks somewhat like a tornado. (Maxou, you are not alone...)

Great feeling coming out of this concept art, eshiu. I strongly believe you should push it forward by adding foregroung elements, though. In fact, I feel this could entirely be the background to a few elements (maybe 2 or 3 elements, not necessarely living) interacting in a very dramatic "situation", in wich the same feeling you captured in this image would be expressed at a much higher intensity. This would be tricky, however, since the image you already made is already quite dramatic, and also, by adding new elements you risk breaking the balance there already is in this image, resulting in seemingly out-of-place elements. (Easy to say, I know...)
Sure, it would not be an easy task to create those uniquely dramatic elements, and fit them perfectly in your conceptual frame, but it sure would then be a truly powerful, artistic and inspirational piece of art!

Work well!!

I love it! :applause:

Great environment, and the atmosphere's awesome too.

Thank you all for all the incredible feedback and support! I think I might just try to do this in 3d for that competition thanks to all the support! Hope that goes well! Thanks again!

You go man!! I'd love to see this in 3d. You have competition but just as good of chance as any. The hardest part of winning is coming up with a great concept and then executing it. You are half way there.

01-04-2004, 03:19 PM
Mysterious atmosphere, indeed !! good work!!

01-04-2004, 03:22 PM
nice mattepainting, looks like you had some fun doing it.:applause:

Great artwork, I really like the 2D stuff that gets posted on this site. what people aren't aware is that you need art skills like this to be an equally great 3D artist.

keep up the good work

After looking at your image in Photoshop I have to agree with what some other people said...that it needs a foreground and maybe an object of focus. Otherwise it's just this cool environment that may or maynot have anything to do with Aliens. If you were to put a bridge in the foreground that spanned the chasm to the otherside, that would give the eye a bit of perspective. On the other side, you could put an ancient building or maybe a glass dome kind of structure that would offset the jagged terrain. Inside of the building or dome you could place some type of volumetric lighting.

I love the way you mixed in the yellow lighting to create the soft glow in the rocks of the background. Really gives it atmosphere! What you might try is to add a reddish/orange glow coming from the chasm...like maybe there is something down there. Perhaps lava? If you make is menacing enough and the bridge old and dangerous to cross then you will add another level of mystery plus solve the foreground problem.

I hope you haved decided to pursue this...even though there isn't much time left.

Thanks for the feedback.....I'm having a really hard time deciding.....I've modeled textured and lit the scene, but after that I want to paint on top of that. I'm not sure thats allowed. I really dont have the time to get all the atmosphere with 3d....It'll be a ton of rendering passes....Also the landscape format, I'm told, is NOT the preferred format.....oh what to od??!! I just dont wanna spend a lot of time transferring to 3d and have it disqualified!

01-05-2004, 01:46 AM
Really great feeling, Well done. !!

01-05-2004, 02:39 AM
awesome concept! :applause:

thank you thank you thank you!!!!!

01-12-2004, 09:23 PM
Really stunning work, man. Congrats!

I loved the environment and the atmosphere. It makes me feel like I could breathe that strange and heavy air...

Say, this piece is in the Galley, but I didn't see any CG Award in this topic... Strange, isn't it?

01-12-2004, 11:22 PM
very nice, would be neat if it were to be used [world] in aliens vs. predator eh? :hmm:

nice colour choice, nice scene, great painting...

01-15-2004, 04:56 AM
how the hell did you do that in PS?

01-16-2004, 08:03 PM
wow...thats amazing

01-23-2004, 05:33 AM
Thats really awsome

01-26-2004, 10:12 PM
Very inspiring!!! This is the kind of picture that makes you think about it - What is that planet? Who lives there? What is around this landscape?......

This is the best wallpaper I have ever had on my desktop.

02-03-2004, 05:37 PM
I like it VERY MUCH.

Allthouse I was in AW competition, I don't care
- I would have loved to see this being 3d.
but I agree with your opinion about creating 3d just for an image, but not for an animation.
I don't feel I got much from the AW competition,
but there is still a chance, ...perhaps.
I don't think you have done a mistake,
You got everyones and also my unknowledged.

02-04-2004, 12:25 PM
you're a PRO!:applause:

02-12-2004, 11:51 PM
just amazing I love it:thumbsup:

10-06-2004, 10:12 PM

10-19-2004, 11:42 PM
That is awesome job for one day!!
