Got any wires?

12 December 2003, 10:52 AM
Wooooow! These are great! two of the bestlooking women ever ;)

12 December 2003, 12:13 PM
I like a lot this game... I like your artworks too... and more !
great... I don't speak english very good, I can exprim exactly what I feel...

We want to see more :applause: continue to make us dream...

12 December 2003, 12:41 PM
I think that the hair from the blond girl (the one that appears in several renders), is simply amazing, and I don't know If you used the technique you use often, of modeling planes, or you used some kind of plugin, but It looks simply amazing.

The modeling of the car is good too.

The game rules, but I also think they didn't make a good use of those models(even knowing I have seen better models from mr. Stahlberg). The one that is on the front of the DVD, and that appears once in the game more or less...maybe...only a bit of motion capture, or some senior animators, and having extended the cinematics a little more...would have made the game...better looking than it is!

Sorry for my english, I haven't had time to think!

12 December 2003, 02:46 PM
great models and texturing!

12 December 2003, 03:17 PM

Is that the same Habib Zargarpour that used to work in the SFX department at ILM?

12 December 2003, 04:43 PM
WOW. Very Natural looking.
You keep getting better. Its amazing to see your
characters become more life like with every project.

12 December 2003, 04:58 PM
the game isn't very good, but nice, but the first movie was perfect, i know why now !!

one request.... if yer alowed... WIREFRAMES

12 December 2003, 01:58 PM
Steven- I have to wonder why EA didn't advertise the hell out of the fact that they had both youAND Craig Mullins working on NFS Underground. I think their marketing department completely overlooked the CG fanboys as potential customers.

12 December 2003, 02:39 PM
Completeley right...I'd buy it for the cars and your ladies :D! Simply stunning. I just wish I had something to crit consturctevley but I can't. I find no flaws what so ever. If u'd shown me them on a photograph paper n said they was real...I'd belive you.:applause:

Nice work on the cars Habib they look gorgeous, and Steven the models look great I prefer the blonde female cause the girl on the left has a lsightly to big ear me thinks  but far be it for me to judge heh! The last image of the blonder turned around looks heavily airbrushed maybe that could of been turned down a slight notch but all small crits brilliant work as usual

12 December 2003, 03:24 PM
They are hot!

12 December 2003, 06:04 PM

You are truly an insperation Stahlberg.

Du är helt klart grym, bara att ta emot!
(there are more pics on the official site) of the two girls.. they even have interviews about the making.

Did you work with the scans from the girls?

They look undeniably alike.. :D *hugs* Stahlberg.. ops sry I just had to thank you for the amazing 3d models.

12 December 2003, 08:39 PM
congratulations!!!

12 December 2003, 08:50 PM
I get the feeling that the Samantha in the cutscenes isn't yours. Yours looks a hell of a lot sexier (and closer to the actual model, who's positively gorgeous). The Samantha in the game's cutscenes seems to have been unnaturally "enhanced" a couple of cup sizes, and doesn't look nearly as hot as your model. The blonde chick looks like your model, though. Top notch work, as always.

Cripes, I hadn't realized spooge worked on the game. What in particular was he responsible for?

12 December 2003, 09:12 PM
Great Models! I likes. My favorite types of 3d projects. Although it seems that your female characters in the past were shaped more to my taste of the female form. I see that this is for a game and a lot of guys in that market like really thin framed females in the media titles and such. My taste aside, this is some primo modeling and texturing as always. As they say where I come from, you hooked this one up man.

I totally missed this thread! Man, someone needs to sound the alarm when Stahlberg graciously gives us a taste of his amazing modeling techniques.

12 December 2003, 10:07 PM
The girls, the cars, the lights looks really cool sexy and "road rage"!:applause:

12 December 2003, 10:33 PM
I think I'm in love... with CG models...

mmmmmmmmmmmmm

12 December 2003, 10:41 PM
I've just checked the photos of real models on EA. I would said i
love ur works better than the real models...... Especially their
facial expressions and poses of Samantha are so so natural and relaxed.
I love it~~~~~

Stahlberg, you´re my God!

12 December 2003, 10:50 PM
I can't simply say that the models are amazing, that would only be a half-truth

In fact the thing I admire most is your texturing and also your simulation of how light hits the surface.

The whole things puts together a very good picture.

oh...and you're models are amazing :)

(slightly late but Merry Christams and a happy new year to all!!)

Man, when the point is CHARACTERS, you are a god.

awesome Work!

12 December 2003, 11:38 PM
Stahlberg AND Mullins man now i know why this game look SOO much better than the other racer sims.

Really amazing models haven't seen the blonde one yet but i'm close to the end so i hope i will soon.
Great work once again i was wondering who did those models when i first saw them!

12 December 2003, 11:41 PM
I like that picture of the first chick with her mouth open :D
Great stuff

12 December 2003, 11:43 PM
maybe becuase of who worked on the game, explains why its one of the most enjoyable games i've played in some time... Sure theres like no story, but the gameplay is amazing!

12 December 2003, 11:48 PM
Master you are very good, congratulations.

12 December 2003, 12:04 AM
Terrible game, nice graphics but horrid gameplay and cheating AI.

The art is great though.

One thing i'm curious about.

That's a link to the actual models these models are based off. When doing these models what exactly where the 2 real girls used for? Where photo's taken and then used for textures? Where there bodies scanned?

Curious how something like this is done.

12 December 2003, 12:08 AM
OMG, I just played this game...woulda paid more attention...*drools*...haha weird but I thought it was Kiera Knightley when I first saw the close-up on the front page:p Must rework that stuff I thought was good...

12 December 2003, 01:01 AM

12 December 2003, 01:38 AM
Excellent, Elegant and Cool!
I knew it was a Ståhlberg when i first saw it on frontpage. ;)

Incredible what technicall knowledge can do in the right hands, no radiosity right?

When i first saw the the NFS: Underground trailer, i was confused about the female character being a real actress or a digital one. I guess i know now what it is. :p

Two Questions:

The hair looks GREAT, did you use mapped geometry?
How much time did it take to complete each model????

Gratulerar, skit snygg jobb !!!!

12 December 2003, 01:49 AM
yeah sexy baby!~

12 December 2003, 03:08 AM
Wow, so many replies overnight, thanks everyone! And happy holidays to you too! :)
Only Melissa, the blonde, was scanned, and only her face. I did use it as a template for modeling, and it was helpful up to a point, but as it was also very rough, bumpy and plain ugly looking, I was afraid to rely on it too much. I suspect she moved during the scanning, or something. And it didn't contain any texture data.
Apart from that I also had a lot of photographs, from several photo sessions the EA guys did with her. Overall I'd say I relied more on the photos than on the scan.
Melissa's hair is tubular NURBS surfaces, mapped with colormap taken from her real hair photos, and a falloff ramp in the transparency to make the edges blurry.
A wireframe of Samantha (the eurasian girl):

edit: note that this is animatable, and so I couldn't tweak the shapes to be exactly what I wanted, that's why the skirt looks funny for instance, it's rigged to the skeleton. (Guess I should have gone with Cloth on that one, but of course that wouldn't have worked for the in-game character).

12 December 2003, 04:28 AM
Posted this on the wrong topic goes again....First off let me just say I think your work is some of the best out there I've ever seen. If I could just get my models to even half of what your are I would be in awe. Ive only done one female character which is posted on my website which also was my first try at a character. When I was in school trying yo learn Maya and such, many of the instructors went to your site to show us examples and some tutorials. Great Work!!!

Couple questions even though some may be old or I just totally missed

Your rigs? Whats the average time they take to do? When you do the skely, do you add bones for ribs front and backside? And your morph targets, are they like influences. I used some influences on my model after learning them from Gnomons dvd skinning 4.

And two, for your clothes, do you usually model them separate kinda of like say a poser model, that fit right on top of the body so you can interchange pieces or are they modeled as part of the body. I understand belts and small objects might be modeled separate but I was wondering like shirts and pants.

12 December 2003, 04:40 AM
oh dear!

another wonderful work from a great artist!

12 December 2003, 06:30 AM
Amazing models! I really admire you work.

I think their marketing department completely overlooked the CG fanboys as potential customers.
This is so true. I went out and got the game today just because of it.

12 December 2003, 09:17 AM
exelent work, beautifull
do you have wire frame pics?
very well done!!!!

12 December 2003, 10:07 AM

12 December 2003, 11:09 AM
Great, great work! It's good to see some of your comercial work, its very top notch.

12 December 2003, 11:25 AM

Are there more wires?

12 December 2003, 12:04 PM
cooolll dam nice work

12 December 2003, 12:20 PM
While I was not associated with this project personally, I know that the effects, visuals, and look of the game is credited to Habib Zargapour. He was the Art Director on the project. I believe Mullins was hired to do a bunch of concept visuals for the artists to get a "feel" for what the game would be like visually. However, the extent of the art direction process was done by Mr. Z. Also, EA was able to hire the talented Mr. Stahlberg to do these wonderful models, which, in fact I had not known he had done until I read this thread! It looks like EA has got the money to hire the big guns in this industry.

I have been working under the direction Habib for the past 5-6 months as he took over the Art director position for the driving in the next James Bond game. At the time, he was working on both Bond and NFS. We also had some concepts done for us by Peter Rubin, lead concept artist of Terminator 3. The game will be out early in the new year. Sorry for the plug!

Thanks for listening :D

PS. I enjoy your work whenever I see it, Mr. Stahlberg. :)

i hope you're talking about the movie & not the trainwreck of a game.

They're redoing the Terminator 3 game because the first one was so terrible.

12 December 2003, 03:30 PM
your my idol, man. too good.

12 December 2003, 05:04 PM
Truly amazing.
I noticed that the degree of detail changes on the wireframe model. Is this for optimization and animation?
How was it done? Tess?

I would love to know.

12 December 2003, 05:13 PM
excellent stuff steve:thumbsup:

Really nice work. I downloaded the demo of this game a week or so ago and it is pretty fun.

12 December 2003, 03:00 AM

Hi, Stahlberg.
First of I'd like to thank you for that you had a great job for this project.
I'm Jung Min, Chang and I'm working at Wild Brain as a modeler. Wild Brain made this project Hi-res animation for EA. You had a great job for that, so we could work easily for this project. We didn't know that you made Samantha for Hi-res. I made Samantha and Eddy Hi-res and I tried to match the body size of Samantha to the body size of Melissa because of the rigging or motion capture data. I'm not sure why we had to do that (well, I don't know about the rigging and the process of that time.)
And, my Samantha model was used at that animation.
Anyway, your rendered still images of Samantha are great and it's better than mine.
Thank you for your work at that project once again.

12 December 2003, 03:23 AM
I love the models!!!

12 December 2003, 03:34 AM
Amazing work Mr. Stahlberg. You have been an inspiration to me since I came across your web site years ago. Hats off to you. Thanks for sharing the images.

12 December 2003, 05:37 AM
very nice steven. I love the hair on the blond.. and the face on the other is beautiful. any chance of a wireframe on the blonds hair? hair is always the biggest problem.. especially without any plugins.. I'm having some troubles with that myself right now.. i think you pretty much nailed it perfectly with the blond. I'd love to be able to see closely what you did :) great job! and good luck with all your other projects!

12 December 2003, 07:13 AM
Again thanks to all!
Superlayer, I'm using a Subdivision surface, which in Maya can have a hierarchy of resolutions. Lately I've changed my workflow, but for that particular method, see my rigging tute on my site. (The foot modeling tute is how I do it now.)
designch, that's a great Samantha! :) Very good work.

Here's a screen of Melissa's hair, mostly open-ended NURBS tubes, but some flat square sprites there also.

12 December 2003, 09:00 AM
hey steven could I have a peak at your hair maps?
awesome stuff again buds...cant wait to see your new female done..

12 December 2003, 01:02 PM

12 December 2003, 04:19 AM
very impresive...

12 December 2003, 10:25 AM
Here's a test I did for Melissa's hair.

12 December 2003, 10:52 AM
Absolutely amazing modelling but I bet we all got the same request: could you possibly provide higher resolution (ie. 1024x768-1600x1200) renders? =) Unless if the rendertimes are like totally insane.

They would definetely make the best wallpapers possible!

-Happy holidays

12 December 2003, 11:31 AM
There is no word in English, Danish, Dutch, or any western language that I can think of to describe this.......

The Japanese term "suberashi" comes closest I think.

When saw the blonde on the frontpage, I thought it would be a nice model of my favourite starlet Jessica Simpson.

It's frigging awesome, I can't describe this other then suberashi!

12 December 2003, 11:33 AM
are these hair´s only nurbs?
Man, it´s so good!

12 December 2003, 05:11 PM
Gorgeous modeling, both cars and charaters. Both of my brother's just got this game for the GameCube and it's very cool. It's always nice to see the work of talented artist on this site out there.

12 December 2003, 09:41 PM
WOW! Incredible! :) I hope to someday be as godly as you!

12 December 2003, 10:54 PM
you mean: nurbs and maps as in "no plugins"

12 December 2003, 10:22 AM
This is amazing. It takes a lot to make me a fanboy, and there's no question you succeeded. I’ve been thinking of expanding my portfolio to characters, but this is truly amazing.

01 January 2004, 10:15 AM
 I will never reach that mastery...

But cries apart... Stahlberg, its a shame that the video quality on the game (at least on pc version) doesnt displays your work properly...

Pd: tutorial for the hair texture! tutorial for the hair texture!

01 January 2004, 03:55 AM

very very nice work!!!!

01 January 2004, 09:25 AM
Wow, that is great. I saw that poster the other day and thought that model was really nice, but had no idea that you made it! Its got a real 2D look, how much was done in post?

01 January 2004, 09:40 AM
i love these chicks, they are great. now i wish i could model :(

01 January 2004, 10:00 AM

01 January 2004, 07:23 PM
very good!

01 January 2004, 09:46 PM
I should have said this much earlier, but I was also very much impressed by these girls. I also play the game a lot and like someone else said, they could have paid more attention to the fact that these artists were working on the game.
Myself I'm just starting with 3D modelling, but I hope someday I can make things like this too.
This is a very good job, well done!

01 January 2004, 03:15 AM
Thanks! Elliotjnewman, yes there was some very minor tweaking in Photoshop. For instance, with Maya default renderer, depthmaps set for lighting the whole body, there's always the problem of little bright spots inside the nostrils (and other 'tight' places).

el paso
01 January 2004, 07:04 AM
hey stahlberg,

I was just wondering if you could post the images you used for the hair, and then also talk, or show us a bit more on the process of your test render.

I think it's absolutely beautiful, the game was great too, I only wish there were more of your models in it.

is it possible to import these models into the game(pc version) for like those start line girls?
they would be 10x cooler than the ones already there

01 January 2004, 09:13 AM
So Stahlberg, I take it your working freelance at the moment - is your school still in the pipeline?

01 January 2004, 10:32 PM

About the only thing I really really liked about the game was the ingame cinematics and I had these feeling the girls had a Stahlberg feeling to it... I didn't think you would be the one who did these. I'm blown away, these are amazing, taken a step further ones more, just the way it should be. I truly love these, wow... I know I will use the technique you used on the hair... this really works... GREAT work!!!!!!

Btw Sorry for my late reaction

el paso, here's an illustration:

On the right, the main image I made, from the photosession EA did with the actress. The enlargement just shows the original resolution. The narrower image is a texture for a thinner cylinder, taken from the bigger main image. And of course I made spec and transparency maps based on these images too.

jin kazama, I don't think that's possible, sorry. :)

Elliotjnewman, it wasn't really freelancing, it's just that I was working alone on this particular project. :) The training center is still in the pipeline.

derby, thanks.

Stahlberg. Wow. Once again I'm floored by your models. I remember reading when they had an interview with the girls and they had pictures of your models along with the actual girls (yes folks, these hotties actually DO exist!) and was amazed at how lifelike your models were. I was sure that it was a team at EA that made them! Hehe only to find out it was done by you!!

My girlfriend bought be a book a while back called Digital Beauties that is a collection of CG women, and you were definately one that stood out (the one of the girl on the motorcycle/jet-unicycle) and was again amazed to see how much better your models have become!

Hats off to you! Amazing work, please keep it up and continue to inspire us!!

Say boedah, its a form of art, don't try to comprehend a decision like this...

Btw before S has to say it... He has a Skin Shade Tutorial, kicit.

Question though... how many models did you make for this project? Cause I didn't really get that.

01 January 2004, 12:30 AM

really good work...I always wondered who does the character designs and stuff for the games...good to see it:)

keep it up.

(I hope I can work on games one day also)

01 January 2004, 06:27 PM

It would be awsome to see some wires...

01 January 2004, 03:01 AM
Thanks guys! frantic I only did some of the character work on this game, only the pics I showed. (And not the backgrounds or cars.)

01 January 2004, 07:49 AM

Almost all days, I play with this game... which finally, is well far from your achievements, full with charm and sensitivity. Even if the humming of the engines is alleviated by your art...

That made now a few years that I work in 3dgraphics domain, and it is always a great passion... but that recquiert always to work to improve, unceasingly. See your achievements obliges us with always trying to better do.

In 3d, as in much of other fields, it is necessary to give oneself references, which make it possible to rise upwards, you form part for me of these references. Then, still thanks for making us dream, your works today reached a maturity which makes us forget the technique... Cheer!

I saw with great pleasure that you formed part of the jury of the contest organized by the French forum Maya, Mayalounge, what a honor you make us!

01 January 2004, 03:16 PM
Now this is Awsome, Stahlberg you have done it again! That blond hair looks Brilliant, I can never get hair looking even close to real. Thanks for the tips u showed on how u made it.

but the two cars in the last pic are also very impressive...

04 April 2004, 03:53 AM
Here's a closeup screen of Samantha, note it's a SubD with the hierarchy intact, so the low-res cage is the 0-level, the high-res one contains detail all the way up to level 3 I think.

04 April 2004, 05:24 PM
I found your work a couple of months ago on i loved your anti gravity bike (and the rider. she had great legs (and the girl in skirt on train)) im 17, got hormones flying all over the place. lol

08 August 2004, 10:10 PM
--------just finished playin the game through steven..and Im disapointed that they didnt showcase your characters more..I mean these renders are gorgeous...You keep me sooo inspired..thank you.--------

dunno who said this but on the first or second page i think

dude i think its a car racing game not a chick watching game==== dead or alive beach volleyball===

the game is quite good -managed to keep to hooked the last race is with a chick in a nissan 350z
thanks for the wires steven good job as usual
that shader of yours must save a hell lot of time by not having to map or skin the model fully

08 August 2004, 02:51 AM
wow, very beautiful

08 August 2004, 08:46 AM
you're the man!
incredible works, as usual...

'nuff said!

P.S. i hope to see some in XSI from you...

08 August 2004, 10:14 AM
i think some people here are expecting these ladies to be used for pre-rendered movies. by the look of the images i think they were mainly meant to be used in marketing?!. like in magazines.. posters... etc.?

08 August 2004, 03:52 AM
You rule. You're one of my favorite character modelers. My favorite one is the black and white image of the girl on the stool. Simply amazing. I was looking to buy a print of it on your website but I didn't see that one offered.

Great work.

08 August 2004, 02:26 PM
if you stare at them for 5 minutes one of them will wink at you!

08 August 2004, 07:16 PM

I'm not necessarily a NFS fan, but the Asian chick looks alot like Lucy Liu. Did you use her as reference. If so...dang near close to spot on.

NFS or Fast and furious... same anyway...

01 January 2005, 02:56 PM
Very nice illustration. I think that the Asian girl looks really attractive, especially the gesture and facial expression - seems like her personality fits those car racing types. Great work.
