hi guys... humm i'm a little bit late, but it's not too late!! :p
This is my first post in this forum... if you want to learn more about me, i'm simply an Architecture Student, worked for 2 years with Max...
I really enjoy enter in this contest... First of all, I know all people think of Exotism when they think at an alien World... It's good, but I tried to find something else...
Here is my concept:
-Some of you know where it's Cappadocia (in Turkey) ? It's the start of my inspiration...
you can see some pics there:
it's simply rock... people lives there.
So, I imagine a complete world of Rock... But the difference is world crash: No more gravity! So a lot of piece of land just rise up and the planet now looks like a tons of Islands...
People now on the planet try to live on the Islands. they work on the work to make Shelters in it...
So this is my concept... I begin to work on it a little, sorry... I'll post some sketch made with computer and by hands...
12 December 2003, 05:04 AM
A tons of Islands... a new world appears...
12 December 2003, 05:09 AM
A small sketch on the Islands...
I didn't post the description of the concept at the right place, so please wait before critics... it supposed to take less than 12 hours...
12 December 2003, 06:00 PM
First attempt of the modeling of the island... The light and the texture are not that...
12 December 2003, 06:03 PM
first test for texturing, I change the default light to add shadows, but the light is just to imagine the result...
12 December 2003, 06:09 PM
I begin to be satisfied with this one... I'll start to work on the top of the island soon...
12 December 2003, 12:14 AM
Looks awsome, I think you need to add some cracks to the base though.
12 December 2003, 04:14 PM
This is what I think about the "Shelters" on the top.... A bit like Cappadicia.

12 December 2003, 06:03 PM
I think you've got a good start here. I don't know if this is your textured version, but I'd like to see some variation in color if it is. Something that makes me gasp and go wow. . .
I like the hairs or roots you've added to the bottom of the floating islands, but the model seems somehow unbalanced. I'm getting the impression from the texture and some of the views that it's supposed to be very smooth, yet in your concept and along the edges I see vertices that have been pulled out to create sharp edges. It ends up looking a bit confused. If you could work on those edges to give them structure, or to rough up your texture to lend itself to sharp edges. . .
I think you also need to show a wireframe of your model for the contest. . .I'd like to see that too.
Keep it up.. you've got a good start.
12 December 2003, 09:14 PM
That's real-cool looking, when are we gonna see it in it's entirety? :) Keep it up!
12 December 2003, 04:38 AM
ahh thats some good stuff David,. i like the glossy feel to the sides. gives a nice effect!
12 December 2003, 04:54 AM
Hi, I tried to work more on the Island. I have now 4 differents island concept... I show you them o help me to chose the better... all others suggestions welcome...
You can go there to have a better resolution
12 December 2003, 07:32 AM
I'd have to say I like 3 the best, but they are all pretty close. I tend to think that the rounded ones are a little more appropriate simply because your city / buildings are quite protuding and clustered therefore it would be overkill to make the land protrude wildly aswell. It gives a nicer contrast too.
12 December 2003, 03:01 AM
Hi, Today, I decided to continue with this model. I change a little the texture too, reajust some things and that's it...
to be continued...
12 December 2003, 04:37 AM
Sorry, it's the same render, but with more light...
01 January 2004, 06:13 AM
This is a fast render to show that I start to work on the final scene... Right now, there are no shelters on the islands, no roots, no particle system, ...
01 January 2004, 06:25 AM
Oups, I forgot: I didn't add water and meshsmooth on the Landscape... I'll do all these things later...
01 January 2004, 07:13 AM
It's really shaping up nicely. :) Good luck! :applause:
01 January 2004, 12:57 PM
awsome amount of work youve put into this in such a short time, looking great, cant wait to see it finished.
01 January 2004, 10:46 PM
those pancake-like nests are amazing!
though I'm not sure about the enviroment
01 January 2004, 03:13 PM
This is the "first" render that I made... I add water, particles system, shelters on the island (I modified some of them, so they're not look like copy/paste systems).
Still no roots, probably the next time. I work a lot with the Xref cauz' the scene has many polys now.
01 January 2004, 03:28 PM
i like this one, i think a few things will greatly enhance the images aesthetics. #1 is the fog i think its a bit too patchy for my taste i think it draws away from your floating shelters which i might add look nice. also the colour of the image in general could be improved it seams a bit too natural to seem alien like. i would suggest the following. add a coloured smooth layered fog perhaps coloured with a gradient to tie the landscape below to the shelters i would go with a red/orange hue overall. contrast the water colour with the shelters a bit more so that it stands out as water. change the landscape texture to something more alien like perhaps some procedural displacment with some glowing colours would be nice. add a depth of feild blur to enhance scale. keep the attention on the shelters that is your images greatest strength. good luck.

Thanks for your comments all...
formoso: thanks for your advices... I'll make some others render to try some thing more related to the alien environment...
01 January 2004, 03:38 AM
Hi, today I made another render with some volume light.
I add roots too. I'll probably take a break tomorrow, to have a better critic point tuesday...
01 January 2004, 03:38 AM
this is crazy:buttrock:
i like it very much, the misty effect is working out buddy!
keep us posted:)
01 January 2004, 08:03 PM
This is an other attempt. I modify it with Photoshop a little to add more contrast and color. I'll probably make it directly in 3d max later...
So do you prefer the scene like this ?
01 January 2004, 08:47 AM
your cold colors was definitely better, amazing work and mood, keep that up. :)
01 January 2004, 04:01 PM
You mean you prefer "Rendering: all the scene v2.1 " than "Rendering: all the scene v2.1.5" ??
Do you prefer like this ? (with a little more contrast)
01 January 2004, 04:31 PM
the one you rendered scene v2.1, with the one you changed a bit contrast on the link you showed me was so great also but the v2.1 have the advantage of being more realistic,
very impressive work just keep going and add some brilliant stuff (original on your own thoughts)...
01 January 2004, 11:05 PM

Oups, sorry I forgot to send a lightning image... So I decided to send a wireframe printscreen to show you where I put the lights and to have a view on the whole scene... There are a small light to the right (multiplicater: 0.4). but the main lights are on the left.
01 January 2004, 10:06 AM
Hi Weider! Super WIP !! Definitely one of the best! Everything indeed look x-tremely great but if you'd dilute islands and mountains with at least one another object - it would be just superb! Looking at your fantasatic composition I imagined bridgelike structure - extremely detailed! Detailed bridgelike (or whateverlike) structure would show scale of islands and accentuate them. Anyway! Your WIP Is an outstanding one !!! You have my Vote man!
01 January 2004, 03:20 AM
