Well, lemme see. I'm by far not an experienced 3D person. So just take this as a tip. Not a method. :p
I've not used Max before. But. There is this method in Truespace for creating explosions and stuff. So you could try it in Max.
Create a rough model of the flash (Or maybe just use a cone). And use a image of a flash (Search the net somewhere or make it). With an Alpha channel, fill the cone (or whatever you used) with the material. And the alpha channel should show the flash only. Thus, simulating a flash. :D
