View Full Version : 3ds Max Unwrap UVW

Can anyone offer any advice as to how I should go about unwrapping the below model in 3DS max

I have set up the seams something like this

But when I try pelt map and then relax it completely screws up

Is there another method I should be using? I've tried flatten mapping but I just end up with lot of separated segments.

Can anybody offer any advice as to what I might be doing wrong?

I'd advise against pelt mapping. Start with a cylindrical mapping for the hull. Flatten mapping is OK, just don't flatten everything in one go. You may stitch separated segments in the unwrap editor.

Thank you for your reply, I did try cylindrical mapping but the UVs seemed very stretched, is there anything I should be doing after I've applied a cylindrical map to it.

When I try and flatten just one side of the body, there are many, many small separated pieces, which would take a while to restitch, is it normal practice to try restitch all these little pieces?

When I try and flatten just one side of the body, there are many, many small separated pieces, which would take a while to restitch, is it normal practice to try restitch all these little pieces?Don't just flatten the whole side, I'd even use smaller parts, for instance segments of the hull, the rudder would be one or more two pieces.
After all, there's no magic one button one click solution, even if videos about pelt mapping suggest this.

Best tutorial I know about unwrapping is this. A bit old, but still very valid.

Think of unwrapping like it is wrapping a piece of paper(2D object) around an orange(3d object). Only the other way around.

Thank you, I will have a read through the tutorial and try flatten mapping once again. Hopefully i'll get the hang of it soon

How would I successfully stitch these 2 pieces?

If i try selecting the relevant edges and then choosing 'stitch selected' the 2 parts seem to overlap and cross over each other

Am I doing this wrong? This seems to happen when I try and stitch all the separate parts together

If stitch doesn't work, use 'break' and 'weld'
Cut the circled parts (use the break command in the quad menu), move them into the place where they belong and weld them.
