View Full Version : looks real to you?

does it look real to you? it's almost done, except for the nostrils and the tissue around tear canal.
texture is coming up today with global illumination and final gathering.

critique would be appreciated.
btw don't you just love XSI? :)

It kinda looks like William H. Macy. Where you using anything specific for reference?

01 January 2002, 03:38 PM
yes it look real nice it will really nice with a texture informed me when it will be finished

01 January 2002, 03:50 PM
I think, it's a good start but it doesn't look real to me.
Did you already take a look at
, there're good references about character modeling.
Now, I didn't say it was bad, it's just that for me it needs more work, specially on the ears.

01 January 2002, 04:08 PM
yeah, the face is good, but the ears and the neck are a little too sharp. i'm not shure but i think the face doesn't fit really good to the head but this should be easy to fix. nice work overall.

01 January 2002, 04:12 PM
hehe well the ears are actually the most detailed thing in the head. it's just a bad angle. coz from a side it looks different.

yah i was using my softimage teacher as reference, once i do the texturing i will also include the photo. just hope he wouldn't mind and wouldn't sue me :)

yah i've been on human head.

these are my early 10 minute texture tests just for fun. these dont have any spec maps or bumpmaps, used the same image for spec and bump.

01 January 2002, 04:16 PM
yah i just noticed that i need to lower the forehead. as for the neck, i will probably just redo the neck muscle coz i made a mistake and it starts not from the right place. i wish i knew all the trepesious maximus crap :)

01 January 2002, 05:43 PM
my god, indeed you were correct about the ear, somehow all the mesh structure in the ear got mixed up, probably coz of incidental selection of backfaces hmm

01 January 2002, 08:07 PM
update update, k does it look real now?

01 January 2002, 08:26 PM
no. looks like a pc generated model.
add textures ! the model is great!

01 January 2002, 09:22 PM
hehe well i may scrue it up with textures. after all it's my frist character model. and i didn't have much experience with textures yet, just tests here and there but didn't really go deep.
heh thx btw

01 January 2002, 09:36 PM
yah i'm still having fun with the head, too lazy to start texturing now

01 January 2002, 07:11 AM
The model looks nice, but you still need to work more on his eyes and ears.. Oh yeah,, and the size of the skull is a bit gib compareing to the photo..

coming along pretty good, finish up teh textures and do some good hair you should have a pretty good likeness.

01 January 2002, 02:22 PM
i'm using softimage XSI and there is no hair simulation in 1.5 but in new 2.0 version there is and probably one of the best in the world but no one can crack XSI 2.0 for over 1,5 months :(
but in demo reel i will definitly be using 2.0's hair simulation, so for me building hair out of geometry is kinda boring :) i will just put maybe a few hair strings and cover the head with a halmet ;)

a lil feature spoiler

01 January 2002, 04:08 AM
realer. It does look like william H Macy though - is that a good thing?

01 January 2002, 04:11 AM
well if you could find me a pic of that william then....we would have an idea

01 January 2002, 04:15 AM
can you imagine...we had the whole term to do out character in school. i mean the one and only project through the whole term. and look at me, finishing it off in the last minutes coz term is gonna end in 5 days :) i need to have the character done, texture it, rig it and weight it. on top of that rig a maya character and animate it with lip sinc and some particles and stuff. and on top of that do a final project for classical animation with lip since and a compositing project due in 2 days. hehe ofcourse i will have to do a crappy job for this character for now

That last shot of the face is really nice. It's a shame that you won't have much more time to tweak it though. The ears need a lot more done to them and the eye's seem quite odd as well (almost as though they're angled toward one another).

Still - bang up job! Doesn't look real sadly, but then I think I've only ever seen 2 maybe 3 CG heads that have done (to me at least), so it's a hell of a task!

...but no one can crack XSI 2.0 for over 1,5 months :(...

LMAO!!! - Guess we can see that students are still getting their software "on the cheap". :P

01 January 2002, 02:14 PM
Still convinced that ears aren't right, you should get good references and take a close look at them.
Good work though.

01 January 2002, 04:21 AM
the eyes are not angled in, they are perfectly straight. if you actually look at most of ppls heads ander this angle you will notice that it seems as eyes are a lil off. if i just rotate the head from different angle it will look "normal"

thx for critique anyways :)

btw stop bugging me with years... :)
i have a perfect ear model in separate file. its just when i attached it to the head, i kept working on the shape of the head and probably been selecting vertexes on the ear incidently. then i tweaked... i can always attach the "perfect" year again but just to lazy to do the reattaching work again (for now). it's just for an assignment at the moment. once i start preparing it for demo reel i promiss i wouldn't disappoint you with the character :p
