What do I need to learn for scripting?

I understand there is MEL and python.

Although I hate the idea of doing scripting kinda don't have a choice.

I see books on this stuff just not sure what the hell to get.

First thing you should learn to read the forum's name carefully :P As a scripter you have to be very precise with your words you know. 1 mistype and your whole script will not work.

Joking aside, scripting is quite a vast field. As vast as Maya itself. Because you can pretty much write scripts to assist with any aspect of the application as you see fit. Or as your boss see fit. So it's up to you - you can choose to be specialized (such as rigger writing scripts to help creating rigs), or you can be generalist writing scripts to assist with various aspects of Maya. The more you know about Maya and the more you know about your studio's pipeline, the better.
