View Full Version : Animal: Chameleon

12 December 2003, 02:04 AM
Hello!! Sorry I've been away, I fractured my Jaw and had terrible headaches, looking at the computer screen was agony...., But I'm doing better so here's a new WIP

I'm back with somthing a little different. I'm working on a project where I have to make a toonyish chameleon. Here's the head so far, procedurals aren't final.

12 December 2003, 02:18 AM
Pi, cool chameleon you have there so far. I'm curious how you did the mouth positions? Did you use endomorphs or bones to control the mouth shapes? I'm curious cause my kitten model has a similar mouth setup and you have some nice mouth shapes there.

12 December 2003, 02:27 AM
Thanks Mr. Tornado :)

The mouth can be kinda tricky when its that wierd "Snapping" Shape, as I like to call it.

Mine is morph driven.

A good way to get articulate shapes to such a mouth, is to put symmetry on, select the front end of the lips, or snout type shape in my case.

Switch to the front view of your model, position your cursor in the middle of the head, and put your rotate tool on, then rotate.

it will cause the edges of the lips to curl in or out depending on what you want.

A perfect example is the bottom right chameleon render

Cool thanks Pi. Reason I asked was I was thinking bones might give more control, but the character isn't gonna talk, he just needs to have expression in his mouth like being mad, sad, etc...I just wasn't sure if morphs would give me enough control (although they would be easier to repeat facial expressions and animate, but again, less control or flexibility compared to bones). Maybe I could do morphs for most stuff, and have some bones in there for extra control when needed.

Again, thanks for the response, and the tip on the lips. :buttrock:

12 December 2003, 04:45 AM
Thank you!!

Here's another little update

Pick your flavor!!!... lol these lil guys have the funniest grippy feet, I can't wait to try them out rigged around a branch.

That is a superb job Pi ! :buttrock:
Even watching the simple but effective wireframe, with it's perfect edgeloops, gosh makes me feel totaly average modeler myself !
Great Great work my friend

BTW, how did you break your jaw ? Hope you're doing well...

12 December 2003, 10:02 AM
hi pisong,
nice cameleon..
but is tong is looking like a vinyle toy for frigide women ..
you know.. the sort ..of thing they use... hooo boy .. forget it .. me definitive too only thinking these sort of thing..
great job..
i catch you later on icq

12 December 2003, 12:45 PM
xtrm3d ==> I had the same feeling about the tongue LOL

excellent model  and color though too specular IMO.
I think you'll need a bit more details on the tail if you want to animate it and get this result

12 December 2003, 03:16 PM

The textures are just temporary to give it a bit more interesting look, I'll work on them more today

Telamon, Interesting fact, there are over 150 different kinds of Chameleon, some with horns, some with big bulgdy eyes ect, some just look plain freaky.

The chameleon I did is a young panther chameleon, see here

Once I get rid of the horried procedural, it will show more of the mesh detail :D

EDIT: Facial, I fell off a roof and smacked my jaw on the way down.... always lots of fun :hmm: I feel much better now though, over the worst for sure.

12 December 2003, 03:49 PM
Sorry, I should be provide more details in my description. I meant if you want to animate it and have this spiraloid tail, you might need a bit more details ;)

I have scanned the google images to find chameleon and I then noticed that there are actually so many different types and families ;)

Great model again.

12 December 2003, 06:03 PM
Here's a texture test, it's quick and messy so I still have to fix up some things and work on the tongue, but he's advancing I think :)

12 December 2003, 06:10 PM
You should market that into a sex toy PI, and I really want to know what frigide implies. Sorry about your jaw. The mouth line looks like it ends below the eye.

12 December 2003, 06:15 PM
lol I know... the tongue looks like a giant penis.... But that's the shape they are, they have this..... umm... head on the end, and the tongue has to be pinkish.. so it's pretty unavoidable

12 December 2003, 04:01 AM
nice work pi. that tounge looks like it gets the ladies where they need to go:beer:

12 December 2003, 07:11 AM
LOL!! here's an update.

Textures are now image maps for better detail and accuracy, tongue doesn't look so much like a genital either.

but looks more like a tounge now:)

Thanks again man, the rig is just brilliant as always. Love the eye controls :buttrock: :buttrock:

12 December 2003, 08:07 AM
Awesome Cameleon man. I need to start making more critters lol.

12 December 2003, 01:51 PM
hey pi... How did you deform the tail ? endomorph, bone, shift spline ?

12 December 2003, 03:48 PM
It's just bones. T4D did this super amazing rig with crazy wieght maps, it's very easy to deform :)

12 December 2003, 05:22 PM
Another pose test... and for a bit of fun

The Truth Behind Forest Fires

Also note a slight color change, that's half the fun with chameleons :D

Download the tenticle rig I have on my site. It shows how to use selection sets on bones to get some complicated motions very easily/quickly. :)

12 December 2003, 05:55 PM
Here's some more wireframes.

I had some polygons selected during the screen shots by mistake, so please ignore the wierd out of place squares, that you may or may not see :p

I have already had a look to your tentacle rig and I found it more than perfect for such stuff.

Wow what a great wire
