Greetings everyone! I figured I would give this challenge a shot. I'll probably tackle it in 3D but I may decide to paint it instead, I still have to think about it.

Here is my concept art and a quick story behind the image. Good luck all!

My concept is about the tenth cat to become the pet of an unusual girl. The nine previous cats met unfortunate ends and their portraits can be seen above the fireplace. Not the most promising start in a new home, but maybe this time things will be different?

yeah, very nice story and idea! Also that extra detail with the empty frame, very good :)

@ Yakonusuke - Thanks, I'm glad you like my idea so far. I will try to add as my details foreshadowing the cat's fate as I have time for :)

In this update, I threw some colours on the sketch to get a feeling for the mood of the piece. I'll probably change the colours around as I go along but this is a start.

I want to have a nice warm light from the fireplace and a rim light around the characters coming from the lightening flash in the background.

I've decided to tackle this in 3D and started blocking out the room, more on that next time.

Love the idea. It has a nice comfortable feel at first read until you look closely and realize the dark history of this girl.

The idea reminds me of the niece from Finding Nemo who always shakes the bag and kills the fish. She might be good inspiration for your character!

@ KMcNamara - Thanks for the suggestion! Your image doesn't show up for me but I remember the character you're talking about. I'm not sure yet if my character is simply unlucky with cats, or if she's some kind of serial cat murderer.

Here's my latest work. I've blocked out the scene in 3D and threw in some place holders for the characters, I tried to get the look of the composition close to my concept drawing. I'll refine the environment geo and build a few props next.

The perspective in my concept art was a bit funny with both the girl and the cat facing the viewer. When I tried it in 3D, it didn't quite work so we end up seeing the cat more from the back.
