I want to do something related to storms, lightning etc.
I think that 'ATHENA : City of Ancient Knowledge' will be the best way to represent that. No real ideas yet, but I may use a modified Tower 1, Orthanc or maybe I'll bust out my 'World Atlas of Architecture (http://www.amazon.com/World-Atlas-Architecture-Julius-Norwich/dp/0517668750)' and cobble something together.
The modeling shouldn't be a problem, the effects will be the tricky part for me as while I've seen plenty of storm material in the past I've never done it myself. One of those cases where you see the tutorial just never get around to actually doing it. :D
Good luck everyone!

I took some time to write down what was bouncing around in my head for this challenge. Below is that idea which helped me solidify some of the looser ideas.
No one remembers the time before the endless storm. Estimates say it has lasted for over 900 years. The previous inhabitants, the Athenians, did not record time as we understand it so we may never know. What is known is that a once great empire inhabited this planet and all that remains of them is a handful of records, ruins of cities blasted to rubble by the relentless wind and a world of questions.
But that is the past. The present and future of Athena belongs to us, the chosen. In our greatest hour of need, we found the ultimate source of power in the galaxy, a planet engine. In our 50 years since discovering Athena, we have yet to utilize even a 10th of the potential energy of the storm. Where the previous civilization of brick and marble crumbled before its might, our constructs of steel will stand and persevere.
In the center of activity, anchored astride the only surviving relic of the previous race is the mighty Tower of Athena. It rises up in the face of the storm to spit in its eye in defiance and take its power for our mighty kingdom.
We, the people who maintain this world, the technician crawling through service tunnels, the engineer constantly improving our designs, those who repair the blasted foundations, who burrow deep into the earth to spread our roots, we are the new Athenians. And the Omniverse will ever expand due to our good works.
When I first started thinking about this challenge, Hurricane Isaac was still fresh in my mind. If you've never been in one, it's basically like being inside of a giant engine. The increased pressure pushing in on you, the endless wind with gusting blasts and the constant sound, hissing, whistling and roaring. All of these things combine for a very visceral experience. Anyway I got to thinking what if you could harness the energy of a hurricane. To do that you would need one that never moves or dissipates, like the eye of Jupiter. However if that was the case, very little would survive for long unless it was built for such forces. So there you go, ruins, rubble and steel. Not to mention hurricanes also spawn tornadoes and lightning.
Now comes the fun. I have very little idea how to do any of those effects. :D

Ugh, I think my webhost is defunct, Nexpoint.net. They've been offline for over 2 weeks and it looks like some new company bought them out, Xibi Group. I've gotten responses but it sounds like they had some really bad technical problems merging their systems and now they are talking about never coming back online. So, I'll either have to get some temporary storage in the meantime or just attach everything. Man, this sucks.

nice. basically you'll create a whole mess of stuff flying around the tower?
if you need any precise advice on how to create those effects don't hesitate!

I was thinking of using Angkor Wat as the base ancient temple but as this is the tower of Athena, I've decided to go with the Parthenon which was the temple to Athena in Athens.
So I will create a low level copy of the Acropolis as it was originally (below image) and then erode it in my own fashion. The actual modern day Parthenon is a bit too eroded to really stand out.
The part I liked about the old Khmer ruins is the way the trees have grown through them. Although for this project instead of tree roots it will be the metal base of the tower and conduit and cables running all over. I love these roots, so cool looking.

I love these roots, so cool looking.
This is something I like.

intersting renfernces, it will be nice to see how you can mesh them up...
when you talk about metal, do you mean high tech or steam punk?

Not sure how I would describe it. Definitely not steampunk and not exactly like brutalist. Sort of like the Char designs from Guild Wars 2. Metal on top of metal but not nearly so many little bits sticking out.

Fascinating developments on your idea and thoughts here, and good ideas, as I was considering this tower too, and any questions on how to do any FX , let me know ,
