View Full Version : Mac Pro or custom build workstation for Maya??

I am a beginner in 3D animation with Maya, and rendering with mental ray is just taking ages on my Macbook Pro (mid-2009), especially when I use Final Gather or raytracing with Global Illumination. I am now moving on to a more intermediate level and my laptop is just lagging behind, so I think is time to change to a workstation.

Therefore, I am thinking whether to buy a Mac Pro (possibly wait till the new one comes out) or custom build a PC. As I understood, rendering in Maya depends heavily on the processing power and the RAM and not that much on the GPU, but does the number of cores do anything good (i.e. 12 cores in Mac Pro) to reduce the rendering time?? or just look at the Hz is enough?

Any other things I should be conscious of when assessing the rendering power of a workstation?
Many Thanks.
