View Full Version : building a new pc help with specs

I am building myself a new computer and i wanted to have some input or maybe advice on whether these components are good or if I should perhaps substitute some components for cheaper parts and still get a good performance I'm going to use it mostly for Photoshop but I also plan to use it with Maya, Zbrush and 3dsmax. I'm still a beginner though, which means I won't be doing any superintensive rendering anyway

these are the specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K, 6x 3.20GHz,

Graphic card: ASUS GTX680-DC2T-2GD5, GeForce GTX 680, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort (90-C1CS21-S0UAY0BZ)

Mainboard: ASUS P9X79 Pro, X79 (quad PC3-10667U DDR3)

Harddrive: Samsung SSD 830 Series 256GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s

Seagate Barracuda 7200 2000GB, SATA 6Gb/s, retail

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Low Profile schwarz DIMM Kit 16GB PC3-12800U CL9-9-9-24 (DDR3-1600)

Monitor: Dell UltraSharp U2412Mz 24"

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011

be quiet! Pure Power CM 630W ATX 2.3

Looks like a very good system to me (I'm no pro) but if you're not sure about spending all that money you can easily get by with cheaper components, especially for a beginner.

- I read that current 6-core intel cpu's are overpriced for the performance. Quadcore i7's will be fine for 3D programs, and more than enough for photoshop.

- GTX 680 is overkill unless you're serious about these 3D programs.

- For the mobo you only need something that has as many PCI slots, SATA ports, and USB ports as you plan to use. You could probably find a cheaper mobo that fits your needs.

- For a boot drive consider the 128GB version of the 830, unless you plan to install Adobe's master collection or something.

- After figuring everything else out, use this to calculate how much wattage you need and get a Power Supply Unit with a little extra for future upgrades.

i just picked up a GTX 560 2GB for ~250$USD and it has been totally sufficient for starting... i'ld save the cash and not get the 680.

what about the Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 OC, 3GB GDDR5?
Or generally speaking which HD 7970 should I get?
