View Full Version : SLI with different quadro cards

I think I understood it was not possible several years ago, but now with newer drivers I am confused.

I have a quadro fx 3800 (pny), and I'd like to add a PNY quadro fx 5600 in my computer. I use Octane render so I would benefit from this when GPU-rendering in maya.

But would I also be able to connect them in a SLI configuration?

I have read the SLI FAQs but I am not sure.

Octane uses both cards without SLI. SLI will only give you issues with other apps. But both those cards are garbage for CUDA. You'll be wasting energy and getting nothing in return. I suggest getting a GTX 580 or some Nvidia gaming relatively recent gaming card that isn't hobbled for CUDA (like the 680)

Hmm.... I am quite surprised, I thought a quadro fx would perform better when handling a large number of polys in maya... So adding a new card for octane while keeping my quadro fx 3800, should i make the gtx as my primary graphic device too??..

quadros are better at maya's classic viewport performance, not better for octane rendering

Thanks to you both! Very helpful.

One quick question, is GPU rendering mature enough to justify a heavier investment on more powerful cards? Buying 4 Radeons (i.e.) is still a waste?

GPU rendering with which renderer? If you mean GPU rendering with Octane, they just released the first commercial version of the renderer. It is working but not perfect yet..

No renderer specifically, just thinking about it in general.
Maybe rely on MR for a couple more years isn't a bad thing whatsoever.
