if you use menus to unbind a mesh the script window reports
skinCluster -e -ub item

but the "-e" flag is not in the documentation for skinCLuster.
What is it for?

-e is short for edit. In this case it's just showing the state of the command, ie edit or query usually, where edit allows you to change a property of a node while query allows you to check a property of the node.

Those flags are common to all nodes where they are applicable.
