View Full Version : Doing a silhouette scene

Hi There

I would like to ask your input on creating a scene where one character is a silhouette and the other is lit in a way to make him look petrified. We are currently busy with an animation short of a little monk that sneaks into his master's meditation room and wrecks everything, as he breaks the last artefact, the master walks in and grunts. At this point, the monk has to have lighting on him like you would have in Manga, where they darken the area around him and they illuminate him with a blue light. The master is like a silhouette at this stage, with a rim light on him.

So far we are thinking of using a rim shader for the master monk, but I would like to create a feeling of superiority around the master monk and a feel of fear around the little monk. The master monk will be in a solid white background too.
for creating the overall lighting, we are using a system that is described by Jeremy Vickery in his Gnomon tutorial, effective cine lighting.

Any suggetsions would be welcome.

Currently we are using mental ray in Maya 2012 to render and using after effects CS6 for compositing.

Also we are a team of 10 students working on this project with me on lighting and rendering lead.

Thank You
Neal Strydom
