View Full Version : WIP - FXWARS 35 - PexElroy

Hey all,
I have an old idea I'd like to toy with

Software used:
3ds max PFlow Box 2/3, FumeFX, V-Ray
Comp AE

Initial idea; Freeform
- shots of different "brick sets" simulate an assembly chaotically
- shots will likely follow a basic story [not determined yet]
- interesting patterns may unfold as structures form bottom-to-top
- will model some new bricks which stack and fit together perfect
- posting project updates to this WIP thread

R&D on these ideas so far,

Good luck all, thanks,

Modeled a few base bricks to use in particle sims, as Edit Poly meshes.
The 1 cell brick is 6x6 , so all are multiples of it, so each brick will
snap together accurately -- even when rotated. The thin bricks are 1/3
a normal brick's height so they "sandwich" together nicely.

Grey are final bricks [Edit Poly], whereas cyan are master copies. (

Your R&D looks very promising!

Slick simulation. Can't wait to see more.

Thanks both pyroskat and Wyatt -
now working on another test, to help the start of the animation [end]. Do not mind the "messy brick piles" , but more order could help with colored bricks. discovered this anomaly after doing the rainbow construct.

this looks really cool :)

Thanks Cyberone - looking forward to yours as well.

very cool! i really like the 7th one. nice mix of physics and events.

* clone of prior post *

#1 - Created an abstract red / yellow brick structure fast with LEGO Digital Designer ( EXTENDED (Homer Woohoo!)
#2 - Tweaked design to make it rare
#3 - Within LDD, Exported > LXF-Files (.lxf) [LDraw Files]
#4 - Loaded LeoCAD and Opened > .lxf file I exported prior
#5 - From within LeoCAD I chose Export > *.3ds file
#6 - Imported .3ds into max (2012) to existing scene
#7 - tested an Optimize , but does not help much in this case (

* This method is no good, do not use *

- Used a 30-day trail 3ds max plugin by SimLab - 3DXML Importer ( (US $99 after trail)
- Then downloaded the free 3DVIA Printscreen 2.3 ( app
-Used free LDD ( to load /create a design
- Adjust LDD's viewport to show a Top view of model and rotate it straight, hide any bricks you do not want to export and keep in view what you do want exported
- Use 3DVIA Printscreen's hot key and it will start to capture the openGL model in LDD's view
- It will save file as an .3dxml file (you can load in max using the SimLab's importer)
- Once the geo is in your 3D app, you can do what you want with the bricks and extras (trees, gears, roads, doors) (

* This method is no good, do not use *

Above method is not good. Do not buy that max plugin -

Over a weekend I learned that 3DVIA Printscreen grabs only what is visible and unblocked on the screen -- i.e. it cannot grab the connected bricks correctly and mistakenly groups the same colored bricks by 'fusing them together' in the 3dxml file, with missing geometry. A mess!

Without finer examination one might think it was working well, it is not.

Back on track -

doing some more R&D on breaking up some bricks, for some sim with one mini fig.

06-12-2012, 08:11 PM
That looks so cool. The breaking on the last sequence looks very good.

looking awesome :)

thanks guys -

done with general R&D -

Now need some idea ...

06-28-2012, 03:54 PM
Have an idea.
Story is roughly based on him stopping a runaway train. (

* Based on LEGO minifig and video games
* Raw minifig model free on Turbo Squid - by Joel Gafford

+ Created textures for face, chest, back and cape
+ Modeled hair with cruel
+ Modeled red cape
+ Cape simulated (with Cloth)
+ Re-modeled hair model
+ New hair texture
- Rig him with Biped

- Begin previs

I love it! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks! Likewise [with yours].

little man looks very very cool :)

Thanks :) . . .

Not using this minifig in my final animation, as I desire or time to mess with rigging or skinning - it was a distraction in the end.

Hope to post final animation mid-day Monday or sooner ( still rendering ! )

You got until FRIDAY....

When done Post it Here:

That turned out very different that I was expecting :)
reminds me alot of the game REZ.
very cool stuff :)

07-20-2012, 05:12 AM
Indeed, very abstract but very cool to watch.

07-20-2012, 06:48 AM
Thanks guys !

I had to change direction near the end, so had only two weeks to do something else, and had this idea sort of from the start and finally flushed it out.

... how many tiny things are important, in that blood cells may team together am create a single egg in a mother's womb. Concept is the core has fortified essence and struggles at first to bind with other cells to begin a new egg.

Also seen is light without heat - power beyond our understanding - that swirls at the center. Plasma energy on egg's shell is an unknown force which connects cells and transforms an egg to its final stage.

Some inspiration came from a video I found on YouTube done with Maya and many cube dice forming into a small 'planet'. (
