View Full Version : match-matched or neutral color-balanced HDR for shader look-dev

I have read that as physically plausible and energy conserving shaders are more prevalent for film works, many are look-deving in calibrated lighting environments so the appearance of cg assets will be more consistent across sequences.

I am curious about for feature film VFX when look-dev artists receive HDR env. maps, are they already color-matched to the plate or they are color-balanced to a neutral tone? In either case, is the HDR map considered “calibrated”?

Also, who is usually responsible in a pipeline for setting the default color for HDR maps before lighters touch them and do creative color adjustments?
