Render a simulation of toy bricks.
That is it.

The entry with the best SIMULATION will be selected by an open vote. The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner designed by me.

July 16 12:00 PM
(You have ONE MONTH & WEEKS to do the challenge.)

TYPES OF ENTRY:You may do one of these types of entries:
Total Collapse Animation

This is the type of entry that would be used to explain the precise dynamics of a model constructed using the toy bricks.
Forensic Animation

This is the type of entry that would be used to explain the precise dynamics of toy bricks falling. Imagine you have been sub contracted by the History Channel to explain precisely how falling objects works.
Freeform Entry

You may use the provided models (and models you submit) to create an entry. The core requirement for this type of entry is to have fun.
But keep in mind the key thing that I expect to see in all entries is accurate SIMULATIONS .

No work taken DIRECTLY from an existing tutorial. You may use an existing tutorial only for reference.
You may use a pre existing model(or use any of the models provived) , as long as you give credit to the creator. If you cant model, use simple shapes, since we are interested in the simulation. (But teams are encouraged, and if you are a modeler, you can make your model available)
The best single shot/sequence will be selected by an open vote.

The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner
designed by me.

The animation and simulations (if any) must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
WIP are encouraged if they are posted in ANOTHER thread. Please provide a link to them on this thread.
WIP thread should be posted on the FXWARS Forum forum and should follow the following naming convention: FXWars! BRICKWARS: MY NAME, Entry,Movie Title(Note: Group entries are allowed)
It is Recommended that Final movies should be rendered at 320 x 240 or 640 x 480 in QuickTime* format (Sorenson Compression), but other resolutions and formats are allowed. * (The animation format is open for discussion.)
The animation should follow the following naming convention:
MYNAME_FXWARS(RESOLUTION).mov. And please add your name at the beginning and end of the animation, and if you can, also add a small non disruptive watermark during the animation.
If for some reason, you can't host movies, sequential images (Thumbnails size 160 x 120 ) are accepted.
Please add a brief text description about your piece.
The artist also has to post total length of time it took and program used.
Collaborative pieces are accepted and encouraged, but Teams entries must have a identifying banner and a name. Shot lists should be included with the entry.
Individuals participating in a team CAN have their own individual entries.
Post on this thread your link to your WIP thread and your FINAL piece.
You can add multiple entries, as long as they have different WIP threads.
Freelancers CAN participate in more than ONE entry
All Teams members & Freelancers will get screen credit for in the title cards for participation
Only participants who follow the rules and submit a final entry will be elegible for the voting process.
The moderators reserve the right to taken down any thread.

I'm kinda confused on how this fxwar works...

1)You download the models.
2) you do a simulation using the models
3) render and presetn to us .

Post here if yo uhave any more questions.

I've downloaded the models .

05 May 2012, 01:19 AM
I tried downloading the models but it didn't work on my machine. I am on mac, should I use my PC for files?

winner gets hired to animal logic ? :)

when I said to some friends that I was entering this they ALL asked if it was a test for animal :)

05 May 2012, 01:06 AM

Hi, I have tried to reply and to send a PM. But I was not allowed to.

I would like to join the competition, can you send me the brick-files password?

Thank you.

I have 5 cameras in scene.
I want to create files for command line render.
file: test.bat
example to list command:
Render r -mr -s 0 -e 100 -cam camera1 -im 111_ D:\workk\lego\test.mb
Render r -mr -s 0 -e 100 -cam camera2 -im 222_ D:\workk\lego\test.mb
Render r -mr -s 0 -e 100 -cam camera3 -im 333_ D:\workk\lego\test.mb
This file worked in maya 2010, but it don't work in 2013.
Help me.

06 June 2012, 03:17 PM
Thanks for all. I found mistake in my computer.

06 June 2012, 12:07 AM
Can't wait to give this one a go :)

06 June 2012, 03:45 PM
I'm using maya. And I'm not able to open the given models in maya.:(......So can anyone please send me the obj version of the brick_models?

06 June 2012, 04:31 AM
I was going to enter the challenge but seeing as my RnD is just not going smoothly I decided I will give you all some valuable things I have found along my way ;)

First off is this

Lego Digital Designer

This nifty little program lets you build using basically all known lego pieces any thing imaginable in a 3d interface.
Now natively this program won't export to known 3D packages, but I have found a way.

Enter the second program

this all so let's you build from lego's but has nothing compared to LDD.

So here's the steps, fairly easy.

1. build what you want in lego digital designer.
2. Export your model as .Ldd file.
3. Open your .Ldd file in LEOcad.
4. Export in .3ds.

Now you have a .3ds file, with all pieces of ur model as individual pieces.

Good Luck :)

If the new rayfire was out (with bullet) I would enter, but I'm just having to much trouble with (exploding) legos, and glue, and all that to really take the time. maybe next time.

Oh and here's a link if you are allowed to, of a forum topic Filled!! with premade LDD models.

06 June 2012, 10:23 PM
Hi tool2heal,
Thank you so much.:) I've downloaded it. And I hope it will help me.

#1 - Created an abstract red and yellow structure quikcly in LEGO Digital Designer (
#2 - Tweaked design to make it rare
#3 - Within LDD, Exported > LXF-Files (.lxf) [LDraw Files]
#4 - Loaded LeoCAD and Opened > .lxf file I exported prior
#5 - From within LeoCAD I chose Export > *.3ds file
#6 - Imported .3ds into max (2012) to existing scene
#7 - tested Optimize but does not help much in this case

Note - LDD and LeoCAD do not use the same bricks, so this method will work on only a few bricks both apps happen to share. Another problem is the meshes imported are not clean or ready for a particle system, so they require sometimes extensive edits to get their topology ready. (

Here is my final entry:

WIP thread:

Individual free form entry: Cyberone (Simon Bull)
I used:
Maya: Stock Maya dynamics (particles, rigid bodies and fluids) Rigging, animation and Modeling.
Mental Ray: all rendering
After effects: Comp and putting the final video together with sound.
Photoshop: Some texture work.
Nuke: some comp.
Lego Digital Designer: Making the Lego objects (but I also made some of my own...).
LeoCAD: Converting the LDD filrd to either OBJ or 3DS files.(Sometimes had to use 3DS file format to export to because for some reason LeoCAD screwed up alot of my OBJs)
Blender: Convert 3DS to OBJ.

Basically I worked on the project about one hour every morning before work from the very start of the challenge with a bit of a cram over the last weekednd to pump out the final renders and comp.

07 July 2012, 05:55 AM
Here is my entry:

Youtube: (

Individual Simulation entry: DeltaZ (Daniel Cederberg)
I used:
Lightwave 3D 11: Stock Maya dynamics (particles, rigid bodies and fluids) Rigging, animation and Modeling.
Adobe Premiere: Edit with titles and music

I saw this challange the 14th, and itīs my first time to do a challage, but i wanted to do something. So i did a simulation in Lightwave with Bullet, had some problems with flickering with my radiosity settings, but i didnīt take the time to rerender it. Glad to participate.

07 July 2012, 11:34 AM
Individual free form entry: manja

I used:
Maya: Soup voronoï + Dmm + other personal scripts for dynamics, Soup plugin for the bricked smoke.
Vray: Rendering
After effects: Comp.
LeoCAD and 3Dsmax: exporting bricks, had to go through max too.

i had a lot of fun doing this, just as i expected, and i had to dig deep into the Soup plugin which is really powerfull, (many thanks to Peter Shipkov for that btw), so that was a very rewarding challenge.

07 July 2012, 01:29 PM
Hi guys! Here is my final entry. I decided to change the bridge for the toy in the middle of the challenge.

Autodesk Maya - dynamics, ncloth, rigid bodies, modeling, shading, texturing, lighting and animation.
Autodesk Combustion - Comp.
Mental Ray - Rendering.
Adobe Photoshop - Textures.

I liked a lot to participate on this challenge. It's a big opportunity to learning some
technicians details and enjoy myself too.

Thanks and good luck for all!

07 July 2012, 07:37 PM
Very cool , I like it.

(working on mine too and hope to post soon )
