Title: Just friends
Name: Marcos de Moraes Sampaio
Country: Brazil
Software: Modo, Photoshop

I created this image as a personal study based on this image by Arthur de Pins:

I always loved Arthur`s style and I`m glad I finally had time to make a 3D version of his girls. I didn`t make significant changes to his version, my goal was to respect most of the original design, and just adapt a few details like lighting and add a little environment.
Here is the link to Arthur`s website were you`ll find more of his amazing work :

BTW, found out after posting that the original title of this image is "Dare to be a lesbian"

Congrats for the front page
The adaptation to 3D Its effective and warm

No real critics, if you have time I appreciate a wireframe since it help me a lot to improve my models.

Keep the good work :applause:

Everything is top notch! :D Congrats for the frontpage!

05-16-2012, 09:13 AM
Fantastic work in all aspects!

What I like most tho are the expressions and forms...simply outstanding! I think you surpassed the original artwork (looking on the attached 2d artwork) - incredible...

I think this is one of the best concept art translation into 3d models/render.

Top notch!

I love Arthur de Pins & you've done an absolutely fantastic job capturing his style in 3d. The face of the woman on the right is absolutely perfect!

The only things I think that could be slightly tweaked are the shape of the girl's mouth on the left, which could be a little more pouting on the bottom lip & the contact of the fingers on the leg - I like that you've followed the source incredibly closely but in the sketch the shadow lets us know that it's the tips of the fingers which loses some transaltion in 3d.

I feel ridiculous even posting the above comments as there's no way I could hope to do such a great job & you should be incredibly proud of what you've done :D

05-16-2012, 06:05 PM
Wow, the hair looks so good man! Any chance you could give a little info on your technique for that?

05-16-2012, 06:09 PM
very nice work :)

05-16-2012, 08:15 PM
Thank you so much everyone, I`m really glad to see so many kind words!!! And specially CG society for the front page!!!
I`ll post the wire frames as soon as I have some time. (working like crazy today)

AJ - Thanks a lot! I see what you mean, specially when it comes to the fingers touching the leg. What happened there was that it was impossible to keep the shape and position of the hand and still make it touch the leg as it does in the 2D image. I had to choose adjusting the position of the hand or keep the position and let it touch the leg differently.

Polaroid29 - Sure, I`ll post some info on it with the wires, but it`s actually pretty simple. Just some extruded polygonal stripes with bump and displacement maps. The maps look like blurried barcodes.

Sorry for my bad english, I`m a bit out of practice :p

really nice.
The picture and the 3D work perfectly together =)

05-16-2012, 09:56 PM

05-16-2012, 11:07 PM
Fantastic work! Flawlessly brought a 2D piece into 3D. Keep it up!

05-16-2012, 11:58 PM
Really great job congrats. Really couldn't had chosen a better artist to translate into 3D!

05-17-2012, 02:25 AM
the expression on the face of the girl on the right is priceless.

keep up the great work.

05-17-2012, 07:31 AM
Amazing work! I instantly recognised the pic of Arthur's just from the thumbnail. The likeness is fantastic.
Im not usually one to scream 'WIREZZZZ PLZZZ', but it would be nice to see how much of this is 3d, and how much is photoshop - it looks so crisp, true to the source and hand painted, that im having difficulty believing this is completely 3d!

05-17-2012, 03:43 PM
Thanks all again for the feedback!!!
Here is the wire of the scene, and also some info on the hair as promised. The hair on the left shows the way it was modeled, the one on the right shows the image used as displace, and the same image was scaled down and used as bump.

AndyH - Thanks a lot! Well, the 3D is what you see in the wireframe. I think what gives you the "hand paint" sensation is because I rendered it with a pretty generous amount of SSS with a soft light source (I wanted de skin to be as soft as it could be) and used a kind of bloom and color corrections to give a warm look in post.

Oh, by the way, I`m not particularly proud about the way I joined the hand to the wrist, but... well, it didn`t give me touble in this particular scene, so I left it the way it is :)

05-26-2012, 06:51 AM
It's very well worked and amusing.

05-26-2012, 01:29 PM
This is so cool!
I love the topo of the nose, cool and simple.
I kinda feel sorrow for the way you distributed topology around the mouth, that would make their expressions hard to animate... Yes, I know it is not meant to be animated, so it is Ok. But, hey, I would really really wish I come across such a GREAT looking model I could use to animate. I love animating.
And I really love the way your model looks. Congratulations, pal. You totally rule!

05-29-2012, 01:14 PM

excellent interpretation of Arthur De Pins's work.
i am going to follow your work!

06-08-2012, 01:38 PM
That's wonderful stuff! I love de Pins's drawings, and I remember loving this image when I first saw it. Your 3D-ification of it is nothing short of stunning, at least to this ignorant amateur.

06-10-2012, 06:39 PM
Haha .. Looks like some of my friends)))
The Faces the most awesome part, specially I love the Blue big eyes the right one.like small ditale such a wedding photo with her husbend on the side by sofa. It's really make the story full and I can easy imaginate what was happened before and after. Which is quite important)
Agree with Cadedra , really interesting to see short animation reel with this too girls)

06-15-2012, 01:35 AM
This piece has been on my mind since I first saw it few weeks ago. Still loving it!

06-15-2012, 03:25 PM
Man you're amazing!
I LOVE Arthur De Pins and I own the art-book that features
that drawing. The transition to 3D is so perfectly "seamless"
it took me a moment to realize what had happened to the illustration.
A bit like a glitch in my brain.
Congratulations! Keep up the good work!

06-19-2012, 10:36 PM

Oh man, this is so so good and adorable. Well done!

07-13-2013, 07:04 PM
I love this cute image but I can't help wondering if it would have been as well received if the image showed two boys instead of two girls

might be worth making an image with two boys as a sort of social experiment :D
