i was wondering if it would be possible to create a portal shader within maya, in which a camera is attached to a mesh and the mesh displays what the camera sees?

This would be improbable, as what the camera sees would have to be rendered first before it could show its image in anything else.

should be perfectly doable, Cinema 4D and I believe lightwave have such shaders.
