View Full Version : Hand and overall issues

Hello! I have been modeling for a short time, I have the basics down pretty well. But when it comes to character modeling I have issues with modeling the hands. Not only that but I have noticed that a lot of people model the body parts seperately and put them together later. But what I don't understand and what I specifically have problems with is putting them together and matching the verts/ edges. This is where the hands come in. When modeling the hands on the arm I have to use a lot of edge loops to add roundness to the fingers. When those edge loops run up the top of the arm and to the head it leaves a nasty looking pinch as well as some ugly artifacts. I am just wondering how to minimize the amount of polys in my character. I would also like to know if there is a trick to makin a character in seperate pieces and getting them to match up. It would be of great help if someone could demonstrate this to me or perhaps make a tutorial. you can terminate edge loops like this. This is a common and good way to reduce the poly count from high poly areas to lower ones.

I just wanted to chime in that TheOnlyAaron's method is the same I normally use on a low poly mesh unless I plan on then subdividing that mesh. Catmull Clarke based subdivisions have problems with three edges ending on a vert like that and can cause a bit artificial pinching there. My solution for that is typically the flatten brush in Zbrush or the wax brush in Mudbox.

Thank you for your responses! I am currently working on a model that is sort of abstract in nature (by abstract i mean im not using a reference) and i just finished his hands. They arent the greatest thing in the world yet but i havent finished tweaking them nor have i brought them into zbrush yet. Here is what i have so far if you would like to see. Its my first model that i have nearly completed. (
