View Full Version : Which monitor

Which CRT monitor/s is the best?
Which do you use?

I think (please correct me if I'm wrong) it is plain impossible to say
which is the best ... it is always a combination of reading test
results (the pure facts) and intuation when I buy hardware
and usually I've been satisfied with the investments I've made
not always, though
anyway, at work I have 24'' Sony GDM-FW900 and an old 17''
Hitachi CM-something as a secondary monitor
at home I have 19'' Hitachi CM721-something (the cheapest 19''
there is, I guess...)

From my experience it doesn't really matter which you take. Either buy 3 in 10 years or 1 that last 10 years: same price. By buying the cheap ones you can keep up with technology.
For quality: Sun is very good. I'm very satisfied with my 20" Sun. Nice colours and very sharp. But on the other side: all monitors are adjustable in color temperature and such. Targa tends to suck, though I was very happy with it for a few years.
Just go for size.

this is not actually quite correct;
all monitors do not have decent controls over colors
if you buy cheap like I did (19'' hitachi I mentioned earlier) and
then come across with color calibration equipment, you find
out the hard way the reason why monitor is NOT the place
to save money
if the monitor doesn't have good controls over different color
parameters (temperature, separate RGB bias & gain etc etc),
you cannot get the color profile for the monitor right...
if you don't work with textures or you just don't need precise
colors in your monitor then it doesn't matter

The best CRT I know of is the Barco Calibrator. Pretty, heavy, damn good colours... but the sharpness is no where near a good LCD (think Apple Cinema HD or the pro line of Eizo). And it's pricey... around $5850 with the measuring equpment.

i got a viewsonic g790 19inch and my cuz gave me another monitor which is a old hitachi 20inch man that thing is heavy. its an old hitachi too because the back of it is so heavy and long. its ok for now. having two monitors is sweet, when i use a single monitor at school i feel like im suffocating

You can't really go wrong with ViewSonic, in my opinion. Just get the most expensive one you can afford, that makes it simple. I have a PF790 (19") at the office and a 18" LCD (can't remember the modle) at home and love both of them. I've never had a ViewSonic I didn't like.

I have a 4 year old 21" Viewsonic Professional P815. Its the best monitor I have ever used and my girlfriend and all my friends have viewsonics as well.
