Hi again.

This is a picture I made for a film project from a couple of co-students. The project is called "Caido" and I'm optimistic that you will soon see more of it.

The task was to redesign hell avoiding the cliches. So no reddish volcano landscape with lava all over. They wanted a deserted, wide and empty--- kinda melancholic feel to it. And today my concept was finally accepted =)

So, what do you think?

11-19-2003, 12:09 AM
I think it's pretty good. Different, but still has that "hell" quality to it.

11-19-2003, 02:31 AM
damn cool!!!!!!!!!!!:bounce:

11-19-2003, 03:42 AM
very impresive... i like the angel of death

11-19-2003, 05:22 AM
Nice work. i love it.
But in my mind, The hell has not light, maybe just weaker the light from the sky? :)

Well done. keep post up more.

11-19-2003, 07:25 AM
cold hell, I like it!! Very good accomplishment ,composition and color use, of course!!

11-19-2003, 08:12 AM
It kinda reminds me of what dantes inferno is supposed to look like.

Cold and gloomy basically.

good job dude.

Jeah it also looks something like "the plains of dispair" from Diablo II..

Looks awesome..

11-19-2003, 10:22 AM
Excellent! Maybe too dry in the background, too hard, but great!

11-19-2003, 01:13 PM
Mi piace un sacco!
I very like it...original feeling for hell!

11-19-2003, 03:04 PM
beautifull work stephan

11-19-2003, 04:11 PM
Gorgeous rendering. I love the color choice and the subtle lighting. The highlights on the archangel are really well done.

I can't wait to get there.

Keep up the good work.

Wow! This is another masterpiece!
Hope to reach your level some day. No critics at all

Thank you all very much for your feedback. I'm glad you like my work.

This is an amazing piece! I've always thought that isolation/loneliness is the worst torment, and is far worse than any physical pain that you'd have to endure.
So for me, this kind of concept certainly is hell. I don't have any crits, I think this piece works perfectly.

Really great work, great emotion and concept - I'm plugging this on the front page

Wow now that is what I really think hell would look like.

11-20-2003, 05:34 AM
I really like your image very much, nice work!:applause:

11-20-2003, 05:37 AM
Not often to I feel compelled to post, but this one is the exception. Great peice.

The only difference is that I would go more with the cold/blue theme. Maybe even a frozen, winter thing, like somebody had already mention, a dante feel.

Still, it is not the cliched hell. Great work.

11-20-2003, 05:39 AM
Ohh, that reminds me of a cold lonely place. It seems like it could be hell and is also reminds me of something from a movie I have seen a long time ago.

11-20-2003, 05:46 AM
i really like the picture but iam missing some raindrops or flashs but maybe that would be too much content

you wrote thats it for a film project so is it getting animated ?

11-20-2003, 06:39 AM
Awesome! I will not miss the cliched hell. This is nice and fresh, not to mention technically excellent. Good work. :)

I also feel the weight of the emotion in here--great work.

really nice work :)

11-20-2003, 07:06 AM
Absolutely amazing. I love how you reinterpretted hell. Your picture makes me think hell is a place of self torment, rather than a place where you have torment inflicted upon you. It is melancholy in a hopeless sort of way. Truly a wonderful piece.

11-20-2003, 07:11 AM
Beautiful. I love it. =)

That's exactly it. Hell is discribed in the Bible as a place absent of God. God is love, hope, joy, etc. so Hell would be the first part you discribed (though prob. 2nd part as well). And man, that picture hit many of the feelings you discribed. Yikes!

If you anyone want's to know how to avoid that, PM me.

beautiful color and design.

11-20-2003, 08:14 AM
Great piece! I agree with ACFred, I want to go there. I need a break from all these people ticking me off every day. This place looks quiet hehe.

11-20-2003, 08:26 AM
Hmmm cool! What soft you use? And would you show sth. more?

11-20-2003, 08:43 AM
Very nice
Don't wanna be there!

11-20-2003, 09:31 AM
Reminds me of a Dream I had a week or two ago. Walking in a cold dark waste land hearing screams. I love it :D  FRONT PAGE ALL THE WAY

11-20-2003, 09:36 AM
very cold piece, i like it a lot... hope to hear more about the project soon.

11-20-2003, 09:37 AM
Fantastic, wonderful twist on the concept of hell. Superb lighting and colour... excellent

11-20-2003, 10:27 AM
very good, deserted, lonely, dead, your pic got them all

11-20-2003, 11:23 AM
Question remains: The angel is it the one who fell out of gods grace badly burnt and cast out of heaven. i.e. the devil ....
or is it the angel of death?

Fantastic work.

11-20-2003, 04:06 PM
this reminds me of Death's master by tanith lee for some reason, very awesome stuff here:buttrock:

11-20-2003, 04:37 PM
I like it, but think it should be more dark and sinister. Maybe add a bit more drama to the picture, so it doesn't look so completely deserted...

11-20-2003, 05:02 PM
Wowee. Its not often you see something as inspiring as this!

Thanks for the new desktop

Only crit is the middle right of the image, one of the mountains looks like it was smudged.

11-20-2003, 06:16 PM
it has a really nice test of the twins feel to it....

good job dude

11-20-2003, 07:25 PM
incredible work... you can't even tell what's 3D and what's composited... what's the software you used and how long did it take you?

11-20-2003, 07:26 PM
and will we be seing more of your work? :)

11-20-2003, 07:42 PM
Wow, thanks for the great feedback and thanks for plugging me! =)

I'm really glad that the concept seems to work for most of you. I had a great time creating this.

JanneVee: As to the angel in the foreground: It isn't the devil himself. I'm surprised though that some of you know about the whole fallen angel concept. I didn't =)
The movie will pick up this idea and take it a bit further. Right here you can see something like an angel graveyard. Angels who fail are banned down here. All life is drawn from them and they petrify. But before I tell you something wrong maybe my employers can elaborate on this a bit further. =)

Malameel & zappenduster: I would have liked to see that as well. I think a real thunderstorm or a colder even winterly setting would have given it a more hostile feel, but it would suggest a too earth like environment. That's why we had to turn away from it. But then again it's not the final product. It will be build in 3d and from there it's easy to play around with these ideas.

DUCKORABB: First I made a pencilsketch and from then I used photoshop 7 only. I will show more as more concepts are accepted. Thanks for the feedback.

wgreenlee1: I don't know his work. At least not from the name. Can you give a link?

kwaiky: Thanks =) Sure. I have another piece somwhere in here: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=101314
I will keep you guys up to date with my work as soon as more concepts get approved =)

11-20-2003, 07:51 PM
 owe some image, I love the lotr set feel you got there. how long did it take you to make that and what app did you utilize?

11-20-2003, 07:57 PM
very cool atmos(fear)...and great use of colours. (its a hard job, if the set of colours is strongly limited by the theme)

the only thing i would change is the lighting, it could all be a little bit darker overall, for example the bg and the sky.

but it might be my personal feeling.

anyhow, great work. raul from the 3rd semester has shown me a lot of your work and i'm very impressed. the biggest "problem" is that u are very good and still getting better with every pic.

keep it on!

ps: may be one day i'll find out who u (and the others) are and i can say hello.
by the way: will the movie be completed till the next wip? looks very interesting

11-20-2003, 09:52 PM
hey stefan, i'm glad you're doing the mattepaintings for our movie:-)
great style. i'll do my best to convert this in 3d...

Looks Good I wish you could tell us more about it.

11-21-2003, 12:21 AM
thanks again

hanzo: I took one afternoon to sketch some ideas. 2 more afternoons to finish the first version of the pic and then a couple of more hours spreaded over 3 more days to make the changes the client wanted me to make. I used photoshop 7

hp: hehe, thanks. I can't say if it will be done by then. I hope so.

maniax: thanks =) I'm sure you will do a great job. And by the way you already did a great job with what you did!

blade of bunny: thank you

Blk Bishop: I would want to, but I dunno if I am allowed to. I don't think so. Be patient =)

11-21-2003, 12:30 AM
very nice!

my first impression before reading anyting about it was...

"man that looks like heaven after a war"

11-21-2003, 12:31 AM
i do not really see the "hell" aspect of it. maybe because since i was raised i"ve been told that red and lava goes with hell. The picture does look barren, forgotten and empty. GREAT JOB on that. Maybe to make it look a little bit more like hell add some dead monsters or ghostly spirits.

11-21-2003, 12:45 AM
Hell just froze over

11-21-2003, 02:45 AM
wowwwww!!....so nice...i like it so much!!

11-21-2003, 08:27 AM
I love the concept behind the peice, it's great when you diverge from the cliched stereotypes. I htink it could halve more to it in respect to the statue. It's pretty void other than that, which I realize was the whole point in the first place but it seems like it needs some other things in the middle ground.

11-21-2003, 10:30 AM
Good work! I like the style and ambience. :applause:

11-21-2003, 11:40 AM
One of the nicer pictures of hell that I've seen, if there is such a thing  Really good dark "gothic" type of feel. Looks like what "my own personal hell" would look like. Nice angry melancholic feel to it, definitely not a place I'd like to be banished to. Kudos

11-23-2003, 04:40 PM
Very nice, but I have one suggestion...

As it is, it looks a little empty, which could be good, the whole barren wasteland streching to infinity conception of hell. My suggestion is that while this desolate appearance works when seen from afar, if any of your scenes call for closer, more detailed shots, there should be grizzly, ghoulish, absolutely terrible things going on in all the little nooks and crannies, and shadowy places. Try to think of some really disturbing, unsettling, and horrifying acts that the inhabitants of hell would perpetrate upon eachother, and then let your camera encounter these horrors as you come around the corner of a rocky outcropping, or as you enter a cave, etc.

I definitely like the fact that you left out the silly lava everywhere, and the fire and the Big Red Guy.

11-24-2003, 07:19 AM
Great work! It does look like hell alright, but looks very peaceful. I'd rather have something which looks like an overcrowded bus in India or a blast/mob site in Iraq to be like hell! Great work!

11-24-2003, 12:10 PM
Awesome work, I love it.

11-27-2003, 08:14 AM
Awesome!! I love it the style. Not your typical picture of hell, but something better. This is so great, I put it as my wallpaper on my laptop!

11-28-2003, 07:26 PM
nice :)
kinda reminds me of the ending for 'planescape torment'

12-06-2003, 06:30 PM
I just hastily set up a user ID so that I could comment on this work. It's outstanding, please post more. This reminds me of Gustav Dore's prints illustrating Paradise Lost and Dante's Inferno. This is a great vision, keep going!!

12-13-2003, 10:53 PM
It`s perfect. The only thing i may would change is:

i think this mountain looks a bit Strange but thats the only thing i would change everything else is perfect

I`ve already set it as new wallpaper. :D

12-14-2003, 01:10 AM
Very bleak and emotive. Hell is supposed to be the absence of God, and it sure looks like God wouldn't want to be there.

Excellent job.

i like the colors:shrug:

08-10-2004, 06:41 PM
Nice work, certainly has some hellish qualities

08-11-2004, 03:14 AM
I have followed this forum for a while, and havenít posted any feedback until now, I just had to. So...

Great work! The old "Hell" stereotypes have become way too tacky in my opinion, and arenít forbidding at all. Your version is refreshingly cold, very bleak and empty. And as for adding more things into the picture, I wouldn't, I think most of the "torture" in this hell is the loneliness it creates.

I just have one crit tho, it may have already been said, but it appears there is a smudge in the mid-right of the image, coming out of the mountain, I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be there...and it tends to spoil the rest of what is an awesome interpretation of hell.

Anyway, thumbs up!

wow this looks amazing! beautiful painting, congrats man! :applause:

Of all the various CGChoice pictures, this one is my favourite. Now, don't get me work, all the work in this category are simply superb, but this picture has that something that makes me want to come back and look at it from time to time.

It's art.

08-15-2004, 11:06 PM
I like the picture, it really does have a hell look to it.
I have not seen something like this before

09-27-2004, 01:23 PM
... nothing to write more

maybe: I suspected, that red is the color of hell... but now I changed my opinion :o)

Amazing man!!:scream: Love the atmospere! Maby it could use some lighting...
