It's been awhile, I just finished another comp that was actually running as an art test for a game company in Texas. I can't relocate, however, I am looking for work (game related) in the surrounding Montreal area (up to Toronto).
We had to design a team for a historical or fantasy rts type game. I went with fantasy and magic.
Other building concepts:
It came to be 996 polygons and uses three 256 sheets for both color and transparencies.

Now for the units: Here are two units out of four concepts that I decided to create.
The basic warrior footman class unit:
And the model. She's exactly 500 polygons and uses one 256 texture sheet for both color and transparency.
This next one is a flying chariot unit that acts as the biggest flying unit that a player can construct for their valkyrie team.
And here's the model: She's 986 polygons (everything is included in this i.e the horses and chariot). 14 polygons are left over for the contrails when the chariot is in motion. She uses 3 256 texture sheets for color and transparencies.

excellent models and concepts!
beautiful concept artwork. theres a minor perspective discepency on the top of the building concept on that balcony portion, but its so beautiful that it doesn't even matter.
if you were to design an RTS that looked like this, or even better, a Diablo-style hack-n-slash game, i would buy it in a heartbeat.

I likes the characters as well as the castle. Very detailed considering the low polygon factor.

Man you have got skills! I followed your last thread and you've always been one of my favorite game artists on this forum. Nothing to crit man, everything is at professional quality. Post that character wire when you get a chance. I'd like to see how you modeled that 500 poly character.

Great and efficient models. I love the sword by the way. I'm amazed by the detail you have from a 256 texture map on the character. Any chance we could see one of your character maps?

Everything is DEAD ON........
Except for the transparent wings on the building.....it doesnt match the concept, and I think the concept is better. The wings need to be smaller for one thing, and maybe a bit more structurally defined.
But what the hey! Nothing else even comes close to needing criticized!

Why the switch of stone-type from the concept?
I really like the angelic, alabaster look of the concept. The dark grey stone detracts from the "purity" of the original drawing, and gives it more of a medeival look.
I was hoping for a more marble/alabaster approach....
Oh well, its not my project now, is it? :thumbsup:

I followed that challenge all month (almost entered, too, just got hammered with school work the second week), and I have to say it turned out better than I thought it would -- when you posted the three-horse-chariot design I thought it'd be the death of you =) Great modeling, really good textures. Beautiful work, man.

Very interesting concept. It reminds me of what could be a level for a gauntlet game. "red valkarie has gained a level" :)

I have to say, I think this is the best rts lowpoly models i've seen. Beats the crap out of blizzard's wc3, liquid's battle realms, etc, you name it. Would it be possible to see wireframes? Seems like you put alot of detail into those for that amount of faces.

specially the drawing of the "basic warrior" (and also the model). There is a kinda medieval approach that i like here, in the simplicity of the drawing, and those slight colours and details on the face... close to stainglasses.
Be carefull with your types (only thing that ain't good here).

wow, thats just really great. No really, thats to quality. The only thing that bugs me are the wings on the cathedral (maybe someone has said this before but its a bit tiring reading through 3 pages of praises)
They are really huge and I think they don´t fit in.
Well, you´ve just shown me that I have alot to work on for my stainlesssteel studios arttest :)

agreenster --> I made the wings slightly transparent towards the center so that they would not hide what's behind them.
Lee3dee --> I wasn't really applying for the job because I can't relocate, so I did not create my entry in their style. The game company was Ensemble, makers of "Age of Methology" and they were watching over the entire contest to see if there were any potential candidates to hire. It was a really fun contest!
Aaron --> Your not the only one who thought that way for the three horse chariot heheh Maybe I'll see you in a contest over there sometime in the future. Cheers ~

What kind of motion can you get from models that sparse on polygons? Are they so small that it won't matter?

Thanks for the wireframes. WHat I find interesting is how transparency mapped polygons can be used with texture maps to fake details.

You're my fav. game artist ever. I'll be surprised if stuff like this can't get you a decent job. Interesting use of alphas. I mean even the sword is alpha mapped, brilliant. You have a good, almost elvish feel here and I especially like the colorthemes. I found it odd that you wish to keep the polycount THAT low unless these units are designed to be part of huge crowds. And as always; the more screens we get, the happier we get. I would like to see the progress of those textures. I recon you use PS. Can't you show us the layers one by one and explain what techniques you use to create them. Texturing is a part I would like to learn more about.

hey, awsome job (yes i use the word in almost every "good crit" post.
i have to agree with agreenster.
the concepts are better than the models.
maybe it's due to the low poly requirements,
or the black/white BG u used.
concept = clean "Pure" (agreenster) holy even.
model = amazing how you pulled it off with SUCH a low poly count, also i agree w/the guy who said "i was expecting a more marble/alabaster look"...
not that my opinions should even matter, i'm just wasting everyone's time.
