01 January 2012, 08:28 AM
hi everybody...

here my first sketch... but i have no clue about the body or the direction i like to go...

01 January 2012, 10:21 AM
nice.ive got a lot of tips from you on mudbox over at cgF, and now to find you in on this challenge is insane! :D
anyways, best of luck! will be following this like a hawk. ;)

01 January 2012, 10:39 AM
Looks great Oglu.

01 January 2012, 10:56 AM
That`s amazing... looks super fun too. I watched your other youtube videos and got interested on sculpting and painting on 3d :P

I would also like to join this challenge, I dont really have much expirience on 3d and that challenge would be perfect to get me started (with deadline and all) :D

Its just shame mudbox didn`t work on my laptop... Crashes on start :(

But good luck with your entry :)

01 January 2012, 12:17 PM
sampo, did you make sure its not your prefs?

check this out (

01 January 2012, 01:35 PM
Actually I think it might be something to do with that... I really thought it was my sucky 3d-card.

I will install it once more and try it out.. thanks!! lets see what happens.. wish me luck ;)

01 January 2012, 02:46 PM
well sure hope it helps ya get started on the challenge! good luck on that. :)

btw, just realized that link was for a mac, for windows, just delete the mudbox folder inside your Documents folder. ;)

01 January 2012, 07:15 PM
some work on the body...

01 January 2012, 09:23 AM
nice job allready and good luck!

see you on the battlefield ;)

01 January 2012, 08:34 PM
took a break from the body...
and started to design his battle axe...

01 January 2012, 09:54 PM
Wow, your blasting through it. Is this all concept at this stage?
Great work.

01 January 2012, 10:24 PM
concept and the base for retopo...

01 January 2012, 06:42 PM
retopo for the head... eye sockets, inner mouth and ears are in the works....

01 January 2012, 08:57 PM
coming nice.
little bit of an "oglu-touch" in his face.

01 January 2012, 09:52 PM
more work on the body...

01 January 2012, 08:58 AM
cool, like you decided to do a heavy guy!

will follow this one definitely.

01 January 2012, 08:43 PM
some progress on the axe...

02 February 2012, 08:02 AM
I really like it. Can't way for the next images! :)

02 February 2012, 08:44 AM
like the axe, feels very natural. I just recognized the "MC-symbol" on it ;)
nicely done.

02 February 2012, 08:53 AM
Cool model so far.
The stomach area seems a little bit to small compared to te massive body around.
Looking foreward to your nxt update

02 February 2012, 05:17 PM
good Oglu, so good. Imho the face is too thin for his body, a bit of massive proportions.

I like the back because it's relaxed. The front torso view looks so tense.

02 February 2012, 08:21 PM
thanks for the input ballo... i will do a retopo for the body and relax and smooth it afterwards....

here the blocking of the feet...

02 February 2012, 07:20 AM
looking nice so far!

02 February 2012, 02:52 PM
nice foot! i can almost smell the direction you'r aiming for ;)

02 February 2012, 06:14 PM
ready for retopo...

02 February 2012, 06:40 PM
hej oglu, your monsterguy is coming really nice.

have some suggestions:

his legs seem a little bit too long, his head too small(but that you know already). and i think his legs must be bigger!

his belly area can be a little bit longer and i would make the neckmuscles-shoulder connection rounder.

keep going!

02 February 2012, 08:21 PM
Great model oglu! I wisch i could be on the same step, still have to finisch my head sculpting. The only thing i have to complain about is the relatively smal head.

02 February 2012, 05:35 PM
i like the overpaint i will go in that direction... thanks max...

after a bad maya crash i lost the new retopo of his hand...
and a whispering voice in my brain told me i have to make an other skull...

02 February 2012, 11:49 AM
the skull looks creepy nice.

I know this won't help but I told you to save ... :D

02 February 2012, 10:24 PM
You're fast! Your concept looks massive and dangerous, the only thing that bothers me a little are the super massive arms. Of course, it's a stylized decision, but it feels that he can barely move the arms (but when he does, he crushes).

Too bad the maya crash, it's the thing with computers... do you the retopo with a plugin?

Cherrs and good luck!

02 February 2012, 09:35 PM
done some retopo... the back is still missing and i like to do more work on the hands...

02 February 2012, 12:07 AM
This is looking incredible Oglu... All those polygons by hand?! Very neat topology.

Do you sleep? ;)

02 February 2012, 04:13 AM
very nice ..
looking forward to see your progress

02 February 2012, 07:57 AM
this is just sick, man!
how long does it take and what software are you using for retopo?

02 February 2012, 08:53 AM
@ ChrisWalker
during the domwar 3 someone told me "sleep is no option" :D

thanks Christophe

@ fantasymaser
think the whole body+head took me about 10 hours, still some parts on the back missing...
and im working with maya and 3dcoat...

02 February 2012, 10:23 PM
sleep is no option, eating either!

02 February 2012, 10:28 PM
done with the topo now....
i have to play with the proportions again... im not satisfied...

02 February 2012, 10:55 PM
that guy looks massive :) good work!

02 February 2012, 08:02 AM
cool stuff!

looking forward to final sculpting and textures!

keep the good work

02 February 2012, 02:52 PM
man this guy is big!
looks great btw

02 February 2012, 11:26 AM
great stuff

02 February 2012, 07:53 PM
blocking the sandals...

02 February 2012, 10:40 PM
the general look of this pair, in combination with the red skin tone looks fantastic. And this little skull.. Nice.

02 February 2012, 05:25 PM
the topology looks great and very dense... must have been a lot of fun drawing that new topology lol ;) . I really like the idea and will keep track of this for sure.

Good luck

02 February 2012, 10:26 PM
first texture tests on the axe...

painting 3 different objects with 3 different shader at the same time...
all 2k maps..

02 February 2012, 08:40 AM

Specular painting is just fun, even if you watch someone's painting ;)

02 February 2012, 09:39 AM
Oglu, you are a master. This is amazing work. Can't wait to see more.

02 February 2012, 11:43 AM
Hi Oglu.... I like your style, man!!!

Trying to post my character progress of the challenge in this forum but the master chief wont let me.... can you send your monster out to teach him some manners:)

02 February 2012, 12:28 PM
sculpted the a goat pelvic bone for his back... he will use it to carry heavy gear...

thanks to mr. nobis for the idea... :D

02 February 2012, 12:42 PM
Your work is being fantastic Christoph! :D
Congratulations and keep it up!

02 February 2012, 12:51 PM
cool idea. that will work well i think.
i hope you´ll do lots of straps and ropes to mount it on the guy.
extra detailing^^

02 February 2012, 03:58 PM
thats the plan lukas...
first mockup...

02 February 2012, 05:35 PM
looks pretty cool.
i would like to see more asymetry on it, but as i said. cool start.

02 February 2012, 11:54 PM
Hi Oglu,

I like the idea of the bone as well! I was just wondering... considering the size of your creature, must this not be a really big goat that belong to the bone on the giants back?

02 February 2012, 07:11 PM
Nice progress!
Cool character, I like that idea.

02 February 2012, 01:53 AM
i liked watching the work you did on the weapon.. the detail and specular touch really was nice.

02 February 2012, 02:27 AM
great progress oglu... looking forward to see more updates soon :)

02 February 2012, 11:25 PM
Good work man.
I realy like to see your progress captured on youtube.
I only think that the head i a little bit small.
Best regard from Germany :) and keep up your good work.

02 February 2012, 04:50 PM
thanks for all that kind words...

first pose and render tests...
id like to do a cave... :D

02 February 2012, 10:15 AM
the cave is a nice idea! with the secret and the mysterious fog ... but why does he looks into the camera? there are those little trolls behind him, the secret in front of him.

btw, good idea with the backpack.

02 February 2012, 10:00 PM
working on the sword...

02 February 2012, 10:07 PM
nice update oglu.
love the way you do your specs. they are spot on. crisp an contrasty, yet not too blown out.
keep it up

02 February 2012, 11:00 PM
Awesome entry, and great videos man. Surface textures are lookin ace so far in those videos.

03 March 2012, 09:38 PM
im rethinking the pose... im not satisfied with... he has to look more dangerous...
menwhile im working on the environment...

03 March 2012, 11:06 AM
Nice staircase. Maybe you could add a bit damage to it, and some stone piaces lying around.

Looking forward to the final shot

03 March 2012, 11:41 AM
Nice Oglu, you're showing a really high average quality on all your videos and images.
If the final images shares this quality, it's gonna look great.

The staircase did impress me more than your past videos, it looks so real and natural.

03 March 2012, 09:05 PM
wow, nice texture. hope you add a lot of dirt and dust to them!

show some more.

03 March 2012, 09:03 PM
new pose... i had to move to a new pose...
to less time to finish the whole environment...

03 March 2012, 10:48 PM
Hey oglu very nice stuff, i liked the videos.

I cant understand how you did the retopology. It must have been rather hard to do since your working with so many polys  .

My only criticism is that I still think that the pose is a little weak; it makes him look rather meek.

very nice texturing and sculpting on the stairs though :applause:

03 March 2012, 08:05 PM
more sculpting...

03 March 2012, 09:26 PM
more work on the hand...

03 March 2012, 02:46 AM
Nice form Christoph
You are using wax brush ? to buildup form
Waiting for more...

03 March 2012, 07:40 AM
It's progressing nicely :)
Maybe you could make the tendons on the back of his hand run towards a focal point on the wrist...
What colour are you aiming for with this guy? Will you keep the red?

03 March 2012, 02:48 PM
Nice sculpting, can't wait to see final detailing like veins and skin distortions. I think you need to define the muscle strings a bit better, that could be nice.

keep it up.

03 March 2012, 07:07 PM
light test...

03 March 2012, 09:03 PM
wow. love the light. very moody an artistic.
is it a volumelight? the decay is great.

03 March 2012, 07:48 AM
Nice progress keep it up!

03 March 2012, 09:26 PM
texture progress...

03 March 2012, 08:06 AM
Cool buckles! Like the metal parts a lot, looks very natural. Would like to see the guy with all the stuff on.

03 March 2012, 11:31 AM
Cool Oglu, g'fallt mer guat:beer:
Looking forward seeing this guy finished - it's coming great! One issue concerning the elbows and the lower arm: imho the muscles are way to big to bend the joint properly as shown in the light test. Your warrior has to struggle a lot to bend his arms:)
But this is a matter of personal taste - i didn't like hulk either...too massive to be roughly realistic

keep on your good work!
Servus aus München

03 March 2012, 08:20 PM
Very nice work man. It probably will look great in the final. Best of luck!

03 March 2012, 04:22 PM
Hi Oglu,

I've seen may discussion on autodesk Area regarding how to import paint layers into a ptex model in mudbox. Would you please confirm if you ever got to a workaround for this? In case the answer is yes, how did you do it?

Thank you very much, I'm waiting to see some more stuff of your models body ^^

03 March 2012, 11:07 AM
Hi Oglu,

I've seen may discussion on autodesk Area regarding how to import paint layers into a ptex model in mudbox. Would you please confirm if you ever got to a workaround for this? In case the answer is yes, how did you do it?

its working only with quad meshes...
mud 2013 has tri and ngon support...

04 April 2012, 12:01 AM
bring it on! really good updates! more

04 April 2012, 08:50 PM
think the sculpting on the body is now final... there is not enough time to make big changes...

04 April 2012, 08:51 PM
one more...

04 April 2012, 09:35 PM
lovely skin details.
great job. keep it up

04 April 2012, 09:37 PM
yeah, Nice sculpt! Don't forget to give him a facial expression! A little bit, would be enough to do the magic. Keep going till the end!

04 April 2012, 09:57 PM
Nice update, mate!
Would love to see him with a skin-shader.

04 April 2012, 10:13 PM

04 April 2012, 10:03 PM
Very nice Oglu! I would not want to see him pissed ^^.

04 April 2012, 05:40 AM
yeah, he rocks! This guy is allowed to flex his muscles.
Congrats you finished him!

04 April 2012, 06:44 AM
came out great man congrats

04 April 2012, 09:14 AM
Congrats to your final! Great stuff! Good luck!

04 April 2012, 05:19 PM
great model, like it alot.
the feeling of mass is really good here.

04 April 2012, 10:39 AM
Fantastic Oglu, watching all the details and the weapons, you can really see that everything is working together. I like the pose and the colours. It is a really good entry. I love it! because you can feel his weight and that is quite difficult in digital modelling.

Good luck!

04 April 2012, 04:00 PM painted more textures than i thought...
