View Full Version : Image Based Lighting vs. Ozone 5

01 January 2012, 03:19 PM
Hi guys

I work on a short animation of a street scene. I think the whole day about
whats better for a realistic sky, a Image from and then using the Image Based Lighting in mental ray or using Ozone 5 from e-on?
Where are the plus and minus of each one? And what would you recommend?
Thanks for your answers.

Ozone is a neat concept but in practice and production, it's a poor replacement for IBL simply because it render so very slowly. You may end up spending more time tweaking and re-rendering your cloud/sky setup than you do on the entire rest of your project, which may be just fine if it's not a deadline or paid project.

And you can spot a Vue sky from miles away - they can get pretty good, but never really convincing, especially not compared to a photo. If you're on a deadline, better off using an IBL. And Ozone does not work well at all with mental ray for Maya, just as Vue Xstream doesn't play well with Maya either. It may be better on the Max side of things, however.

Ozone might be nice if you need/want more control over the sky.

What's more realistic than real? Use an HDRI
