Hi everyone,

I just join and I would like to know what is the best courses to do to learn all the basics about CG animation and VFX.

That is an extremely broad subject do you have any more information on what you are looking for?, such as looking for an actual school or just tutorials. to learn? For free vfx lessons check out and the forum for animation tutorials is here:

Andrew, thanks for the reply. Actually I want to learn the basics of the software that are use mainly now in animation 3D and VFX. I'm not really looking for a school at the moment that might come later on, but I sure would like to find either a website or tutorials on them.

Do you know some reference books that I should buy to help me. Since you're in the business for a beginner like me, what would be you're best advice on how to get notice and get your foot on the door so to speak.

I'll sure check out the reference you've sent me.

Knowing the software isn't the key to getting work and finding success, keep in mind that both animation and VFX have foundations in traditional art techniques. It can be a good boost to your resume to be able to confidently list off software packages you are confident in but keep in mind they are constantly being updated and changed. Therefore if you know fundamentals you can easily jump between them after getting re-adjusted. I can only provide references from how I personally learned, they may work for you or may not. Ultimately it comes down to your personal desire to learn, anyway this is how I learned:

I started off with 3ds max by going through the "3ds Max Bible 2010" by Kelly Murdock, it was a good introduction to 3d and very basic fundamentals.

After becoming fairly confident with max I made the jump over to Maya and used "Learning Autodesk Maya 2010: Foundation" they also have an Intermediate book that covers similar topics slightly more in depth. I liked learning with those books because they were like working on real projects based on an actual movie. (of course all of these books have newer versions out)

For VFX I would look at "The Art and Science of Digital Compositing" by Ron Brinkmann and
the "VES Handbook of Visual Effects: Industry Standard VFX Practices and Procedures" by Jeffrey A Okun and Susan Zwerman.

Those are all of course if your willing to shell out around 40-50 bucks a book, for free learning there is tons of information here on cgsociety in the various forums in general techniques and as I previously mentioned
