I would be very grateful if someone could explain the process of saving work in Softimage 2012 that can safely be opened in 7.5.

What do you want to save?

If it is something simple like a sphere with a phong you can export with .xsi, but if it something more complicated it might not be possible to export. For example most of ICE, some improved Mentalray shaders will not work in 7.5 .

It was just a simple scene :) I'm currently learning how to use softimage at college with the 7.5 version and I'm not creating anything mind blowing.

I have the 2012 version though and I have created a scene just made out of primitives and then used some box modelling techniques.

I have managed to export two types though, a dotXSi and a collada version.

Could I not just copy the entire project folder onto my memory stick and load it into 7.5? Like I have said its really basic work

you cannot. As with most other 3d apps out there, the scene format changes quite a bit in between versions.
best bet is using fbx for getting most of the stuff out, or .obj
