View Full Version : an Animator in a Texturing world

Hi I am an inspiring animator, I put the majority of my time into animation but I want to be well rounded in all aspects of 3d. My problem is that everytime i model something I dont know how to layout the uv's in the texture editor. Unless it's a sphere or cylinder where I can do something simple like cylindrical mapping or spherical mapping. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get better at this.

Please post what 3d programs you have access to. It's hard to give any specific advice if you don't.

There are some specialized programs out there that make the creation of UV layouts easier, e.g. headus uvlayout ( or unwrap3d ( Modo for example has some pretty good UV tools built in too.

They work by first selecting the edges where you want the texture seams to be, then the unfolding of the UV island(s) will be done automatically. You can then tweak the UVs manually if necessary. There are some tutorial videos available on the headus website that demonstrate how this works exactly.
