Post your questions for the THE WAVE FXWars

in the challenge rule topic you talk about simulation but can we make a rig for the wave something like what they did on surf up ?

10 October 2011, 10:38 PM
I can't see why not using an interesting working rig instead of a hard to control sim. I'd say as always, do it the way it will work the better for you.
If I decide to attempt this challenge, I'll go for a setup like surf's up for sure. It may depend on the shot you want to create as well ... as well as the size / shape of the wave.

Does our submission have to be a final render? or can it be in particle mode?

12 December 2011, 03:36 AM
Particle mode is fine...
What do you have in mind?

12 December 2011, 08:17 PM
Oh cool thanks for reply, just working on a realflow simulation to get the nice wave shape, but not sure if I'll get enough time to finish a fully shadered rendered pass!!

Post a WIP thread and we can support you.

12 December 2011, 03:51 PM
Where's the official thread with the rules for this challenge?

12 December 2011, 02:07 AM
Hi Roberto, well I'm still working on it, but the latest wip I've got you can see it here:

But as you will see everything still in particle mode...

12 December 2011, 10:14 PM
I've re-simulated with a bigger wave and a loooot more splash and foam particles...

12 December 2011, 05:36 AM
That is fantastic work.
So what is next?

12 December 2011, 12:41 AM
Hi Roberto, well hopefully I'll get some time in the holiday and then finish it properly by adding mesh to the particles and then taking into maya for rendering!!!

Hi! I`m very interested of this theme with wave. I`d like to join and try. But I wanted to ask, when all work must be done?

12 December 2011, 02:16 PM
Give me a couple of weeks.

I plan to relaunch this challenge soon..

Until then, just do pre production.

12 December 2011, 09:35 AM
Thanks a lot! I`ll try!

12 December 2011, 04:49 PM
Relaunch...? Great! Maybe I can enter then!

I did this a while ago, but it needs some rendering.

12 December 2011, 09:30 PM
Yes i do want to do a relaunch.
I was in the middle of my wedding when I l;launched it the last time. It was not my best plan.

01 January 2012, 05:01 AM
I have researched different ways of doing a swell in RealFlow, I think I might have something good to work with. I will post results soon.

01 January 2012, 02:24 PM
Ok for know here are some sketch up models you can use for the simulations:

01 January 2012, 05:34 AM
Here I posted few simulations:

Very low resolution:

Higher resolution: and

And even higher resolution meshed with splash and foam:

There is plenty of room for improvement. Can't wait for this challenge to re-launch!

This was pretty sweet. Whats your plan for attack next?

Guys sorry for being MIA,

We are in preproduction of a HUGE project at work, and I was launching the HCR modeling' challenge.

FX wars is next on my list of things to do.

02 February 2012, 03:07 AM
Sorry if i'm missing something obvious here, but i want to participate and I can't find the thread describing this months challenge?

02 February 2012, 08:14 PM
Sorry guys for being MIA this month.

I recently got married, and now i am knee deep in crunch time at work.
I had a big challenge in mind, but it might have to be moved forward 2 months.

Until then I was thinking of doing a more straightforward mini challenge..

how about: Roswell Crash 1947?

02 February 2012, 08:24 PM
That's pretty cool. Something I may be able to get into.

02 February 2012, 10:30 PM

that sounds awesome. I'm gonna try and do that!

02 February 2012, 11:16 AM
Roswell Crash sounds awesome :)
Can count me in.

02 February 2012, 08:19 PM
Guys give me the weekend...

02 February 2012, 05:56 AM
Ok guys I have build the model over the weekend.
We go live this week.

That looks fun too =) About the Wave-relaunch (if still wanted) you might want to ask over at the lighnting challenge forums, they had in their #28 challenge an amzing old ship model and sea model. Combining those 2 challenges might lead to some very impressing stuff ;)
oh, and for some not-so-frequent reader in hear (like me) it might be advisable to start numbering the challenges :D took me a while to figure out, that wave was on hold :D

Nice ufo model, i started mine this weekend
