These are a couple of paintings that I recently added to my site. One is Batman, obviously, and the other is sort of a reworking of an older piece.

Hey I just realized both these feature peeps with two horns! Far out.

Kick ass work there.

I stuck them in Photoshop and upped the brightness by +30 and got to see all the detail that was lost in the dark. heh

Very good work.

That Batman is spectacular. I'm speachless. This is the best front page thread I've seen in a long time.

Bravo man! awesome!

Awesome paintings. Batman's head may be a bit on the small side but overall, it works.

long time fan of your work francis.

i really like the batman, he's a bit grotesque and creepy looking in this one, but it's fitting for a hero that's probably a bit crazy himself.

I like, I go on your website at once!:buttrock:

love that style, both are great, your understanding of lighting is superb

I love that dark style of yours.... which remember me some of my favourite illustrators (Bisley, Brom, Frazetta...) Your Batman is awesome but I agree with VIZION... his head is too small, and for me is obvius that the rotation doesn´t fit with a natural twist of the spine.

Very good works anyway....

That's great work.
Well done

<edit> just been to your site - excellent stuff. The tutorials are great!

Amazing colours, and ambient. Lightning is almost perfect.

But I think not only the head of Batman is small, there is a anatomy problem at the meeting of arm and shoulder: the shoulder muscles don't go that way into the biceps, they should be more parallel to the arm.
Again, on the elbow area, it doesn't look right to me. Maybe it worked better, a little bit more to the right, and less prominent. Now it seems to be broken.
One last more thing, the exaggerated bump on the veins is too used, and I think doesn't help.
Other than this I love the image, and would love to have your skills with light and color.

Great work.

awesome paintings u got there, i like the mood;)

11-08-2003, 12:07 PM
The Batman is amazing! I would love to see the Batman Movie done with your style.
I hate all that plastic/rubber look that the movies have now.

Very good work, the lighting is brilliant and the whole mood in those images are awesome.

11-08-2003, 12:12 PM
one thing about the batman's fingers i don't quite get it with the form of it, anyway i love it:beer:

11-08-2003, 01:26 PM
Hey Francis, wonderful painting of Batman. The second one is good too, but there's something about the Batman one that makes it stand out...

I'm still working on the 3d vesrion of your female robot. I've run into a wall when it comes to the face though :(

Anyway, I will finish it one way or another!

Good to see you post your awesome stuff here :)

hey, great work! I really like it. I disagree with comments about anatomy and the head being small. The exageration is what makes these pieces work so well (specially batman).

11-08-2003, 05:52 PM
Good work:thumbsup:

Bat face that smile!:) ??

Nice lighting.

Something looks off with batmans biceps/triceps area. I dont know exactly what it is, but as mentioned the shoulder looks a little off and also I think that the tricep needs some more volume.

It's stylised. It's not meant to be an anatomy study.

I realize that this is a stylized piece of art, but batman's body is still a human one and when people view it they are going to expect him to have realistic muscle structures.

I am not saying that the muscles cant be exagerated but they should look like they are in the correct area. Otherwise I find it a bit distracting.

wow, these are cool.

i did put them inphotoshop as well and put the levels up and it revealed all this awsoem deatail in the pics!! really cool work. u have to keep them the way they are tho, cos thats the mood!!!

Beautiful work -- Thanks for posting these!

Holy smokes, thanks for all the feedback! I did *not* expect that kind of response..

MBeggar, NightFox, KWAK, Goro, chain_jane, onscreen, Devilsnok, thank you very much.

vizion, jum'bok - thanks, as you can see the anatomy was the thing most people noticed.

Riddick, Pedro Pozo, thank you.

Shin Chau Pu - thank you, those are definitely some of my favorite artists and inspirations. Thank you for the anatomy crit - appreciated.

Bliz, tgn376j, thank you very much.

CoolBlueMan - you are probably right, there are anatomy issues there. In all my character stuff, I try to add some character/attitude in the anatomy and tweak it a little bit away from reality. It probably helps to know anatomy better than I do, but I am working on it!

Bimo, Pufferfish, thank you, I am interested in mood and lighting these days...

urgaffel - cool man! Maybe I will go back and look at those initial concept sketches and see if I can paint something that will help you out.

Franz, Salaadin, thanks!

technoguy - thank you, I'm glad you "got it." I think I need to work on making sure it is evident when I'm trying to stylize or exaggerate.

Franc, JBoskma, Kenshin_himura, thanks!

oxyg3n - yeah, it shows what I need to practice!

ninjacore - hm, I might have my monitor set fairly bright. I work across 3 monitors (2 machines) so I know there are issues there.

Goon, ceql, Side_FX, William b Hand, thanks very much!

OK, off I go to study anatomy!

11-09-2003, 08:36 AM
very impressive work

11-09-2003, 08:00 PM

Co0lsies!!! By the way, Anyone else notice the resemblance between the horned woman and the villainess from Disney's version of "Sleeping Beauty"? Very striking! Or was that intentional?

11-10-2003, 05:20 PM
Cool I got an award! Thanks everybody!

TheHustle - it was painted 100% in Photoshop. There were no line drawings or sketches involved. I just blocked in rough shapes right in Photoshop and went dark to light.

JesterCapp - yeah there probably is a resemblance. I have been going through this phase of character designs that are inspired by religious costumes, authority/royalty figures, etc. The Snow White "evil queen" is certainly a great character design, so it's definitely an influence.

Thank you for the comments guys.
